O singer of the skies, these praises have been lovingly composed for you; the hymns seek you as eagerly as cows seek their calf. In our longing, we call upon Indra and Pūṣan, desiring friendship, well-being, and the attainment of strength. Among all, O Indra, slayer of Vṛtra, none stands above you—none is your equal, none can compare. I honor the swift one among people, the generous giver of wealth and cattle, who stands as the equal of all. My hymns have been poured forth to you, Indra; they rise in harmony to the mighty bull, the lord. Fortunate is the mortal who is guided by the Maruts, Aryaman, and Mitra, who do no harm and bring wisdom. Whatever is hidden, firm, or concealed, whatever precious wealth is withheld, O Indra, bring that to us. We have heard of your most renowned deed, O slayer of Vṛtra, which you performed for the benefit and greatness of the people. With your help, O hero, may we reach fame; O mighty one, may we attain the highest goal. Indra, accept in the morning our offerings of grain, cakes, and hymns. You struck off Namuci’s head with the foam of water, conquering all contests. These Soma juices, O Indra, are pressed for you—and those yet to be pressed; delight in them, O mighty one. For you, the radiant seat is spread, and the Soma juices are poured; be gracious to the singers. Come, Indra, as they pour the Soma, bestower of a hundred powers; let them sprinkle the greatest one with the juices. From here, Indra, come to us with a hundredfold strength, with desired gifts, with a thousandfold might. The slayer of Vṛtra gave the drop; when born, he asked his mother—who are the fierce ones, who hear? We invoke the mighty hymn, flowing with praise, for aid and support, to accomplish our work. Varuṇa, Mitra, and Aryaman—wise and united with the gods—lead us with upright guidance. From afar, the radiant one, ever youthful, spreads his light in all directions. Mitra and Varuṇa, with clarified butter, release for us cattle-rich abundance; with honey, O skillful ones, the realms. The sons have raised their voices, reaching the ends in the sacrifices; the strong ones, well-known, come for the journey. Vishnu strode widely, placing his foot three times, firmly set in the dust. Come, driven by your spirit, raise up the well-pressed one; in this gift, drink the Soma. What word is praised for the wise, for the great god? That alone is his. Neither the hymn being praised nor the wealth is noticed, nor is the song being sung perceived. Indra is most delighted by hymns; he is the lord of prizes and companion of those who press Soma, riding with tawny steeds. Come to us, approach our Soma with prizes; do not turn away, as a mighty youth. When, O gracious one, will the praised hymn please you? Come to us, O Rudhadvāh, for the long-pressed Soma, for refreshment. Indra, drink the Soma for the Brahman’s generosity; follow the seasons. This friendship of yours is unbroken. We are your singers, Indra, O lover of song; you, O Soma-drinker, conquer for us. Indra, place heroism in our bodies, even among the clans; grant us the mighty strength of Satrājit. Thus you are heroic, thus you are strong, O champion; thus your mind is fit for giving. We praise you, O champion, as cows praise the unmilked one; lord of the moving world, lord of the steadfast, Indra, seer of the sun. We invoke you, Indra, for the prize, O leader of the people; in battles, you are the true lord; men invoke you at the ends, O possessor of the sun. Now praise Indra, bestower of divine gifts, as is fitting—he who is renowned among singers, the generous Maghavan, who grants wealth as if by the thousands. We call to you, mighty, unfailing Indra, delight of the generous, bringer of joy—let us praise him with songs as cows call to their calf in the stalls. With your songs, seek out Indra, the giver of wealth, for help in distress; singing loudly at the Soma-pressing, I call the supporter, as a worker calls for his wage. The swift one strives to win the prize, yoked with Purandhi; I bow to you, Indra, much-invoked, with my song—firm as a well-shaped wheel. Drink of the pressed, exhilarating Soma, delight in it, O Indra rich in cattle; be our ally in the shared feast, may your thoughts protect and strengthen us. Come here, indeed, for friendship, grant us a share of wealth; rise up, Maghavan, for the winning of cows, rise, Indra, for the gaining of horses.
