Return, O Agni, with wealth and abundance, spreading prosperity in all directions, nourishing all with your sustaining power. And if I, Indra, could rule over wealth as you do, let my praise be unique, and may my friend be a generous giver of cows. May I learn for him and give to him, O mighty lord, wise and powerful, if I may become the master of cattle. O Indra, for the sacrificer and the one who presses Soma, let the sweet-speaking cow yield nourishing milk, cattle, and horses. Waters, come to us and bring delight; bestow strength upon us for great vision and for battle. Let your most auspicious essence be shared with us, O waters, as mothers nourish their children. Therefore, let us seek the one for whose dwelling you strive; O waters, generate and nurture us. May the wind blow healing, bringing happiness and delight, carrying us across to a long life. O wind, you are our father, our brother, our friend—grant us life. Whatever nectar is hidden in your house, O wind, concealed in secret, grant that to us for our lives. Swift and all-formed, the wind carries the golden egg, the great bird clothed in sun’s rays, moving in order, self-born, generating wisdom. In the waters the seed was placed, all-shaped, radiant, rising upon the earth; measuring his greatness in the mid-space, he advanced—the seed of the vigorous horse. Adorned with a thousand, clothed in rays, the sacrifice upholds the sun’s brilliance; giver of thousands and hundreds, supporter of heaven, lord of the world. In heaven, when the bird with golden wings soars, all look upon it with their hearts; you are the messenger of Varuṇa, the bird of Yama’s realm, the shining one. The Gandharva stands upright in heaven, bearing bright weapons, clothed in fragrance for vision; he generates the golden name and beloved things. The drop moves toward the ocean, seeing with the vulture’s eye, fulfilling its order; its brilliance shines with pure flame, creating beloved things in the third realm. The ninth, the third part, swift and shining like a mighty bull, terrifying and thundering, stirs men; advancing, unblinking, a single hero—Indra conquered a hundred armies together. With advancing, unblinking, victorious, bold Indra, hard to move, stand together in battle, O men, with the mighty one holding the arrow. He, with those holding arrows and bearing quivers, the master and leader in battle—Indra with his troop, victorious, soma-drinker, strong-armed, fierce-bowed—strikes with his weapons. O Brihaspati, drive your chariot around, repelling demons and enemies; shatter armies, conquer in battle, and make us the best among chariots. Wise in strength, ancient, heroic, powerful, swift, enduring, fierce, conquering, mighty Indra, stand upon the chariot that brings victory and cattle. Breaker of enclosures, knower of cattle, with thunderbolt arms, victorious and mighty—follow this Indra, your companion, O friends, and join together with him. Indra, the hero with a hundred powers, advancing with force, breaker of enclosures, hard to move, destroyer in battle—may our army be protected in the fight. Indra is their leader, Brihaspati their right hand, sacrifice their fortress, Soma their front; among the divine armies, let the Maruts go at the forefront of the victorious. The resounding cry of the gods arises in victory—of Indra the mighty, of Varuṇa the king, of the Ādityas, of the Maruts, fierce and great of mind, who shake the worlds. O Maghavan, stir up the weapons, rouse the minds of my own, O slayer of Vṛtra; let the victorious cries of horses and chariots rise up. May Indra be with us among the gathered banners; may our arrows be victorious, our heroes superior; O gods, protect us as we invoke you. That army of the Maruts, belonging to the others, approaches without strength—conceal it in darkness and confusion, so that one among them does not recognize another. Lead astray the minds of these enemies, scatter their limbs, drive them away; advance, burn them in their hearts with torments, let the foes be joined with blinding darkness. Go forth and be victorious, O men; may Indra grant you protection; may your arms be fierce and invincible. Released, fly far away, O arrow sharpened by prayer; go forth, strike down the enemies, and do not touch any of mine. Let the kites and great birds follow this, let the vultures have the flesh of the slain; let our army be free from harm, and let the birds not follow any of mine. O Maghavan, scatter the hostile army that opposes us; O Indra, slayer of Vṛtra, and Agni, burn them on both sides. Where the arrows fall, where the youths are like arrows, there may Brihaspati and Aditi grant us protection, always. Scatter the demons, scatter the foes, break the jaws of Vṛtra, shatter the wrath, O Indra, slayer of Vṛtra, of the assailing enemy. Scatter our foes, O Indra, cast down the assailants; whoever attacks us, send him into darkness. The two arms of Indra, firm and youthful, invincible, of good aspect, irresistible—let them be harnessed at the first call to battle, by which the great strength of the Asuras was conquered. I cover your vital parts with armor; may Soma the king anoint you with ambrosia; may Varuṇa make you victorious; may the gods gladden you. Let the enemies become blind, headless, like serpents; may Indra slay them again and again, those struck down by Agni. Whoever among us is hostile, or who, near or far, wishes us harm—may all the gods strike him down; may prayer be my armor within, and may protection be my armor within.
