He who prepares himself with careful ritual purity, cleansing his limbs, sits with the steady majesty of an elephant, the dignity of a virtuous king, and the alertness of a falcon perched upon a branch. May he, in his sanctity, bring us all treasures from heaven and earth, purified and gathered, O Soma—bring them here to us. The ninth, the foremost portion of the sacred Soma, has begun to flow; its powerful streams, pressed with strength, surge forth, following the path of the gods. The wise ones, singing with their voices, purify the team; the poets, with their hymns, generate radiant light. O mighty Soma, as you are purified, may your powers grow ever stronger, reaching the vast ocean of praise. Now, let this sacred utterance be heard: I praise Indra, renowned by name, the priestly one. To you, Lord of strength, our words flow freely, unrestrained. As streams follow their destined paths, O Indra, so may generous gifts come to you today. As is fitting, we guide the chariot toward you, seeking your favor, O most powerful Indra—mighty, master of riches, breaker of hostile hosts. With your mighty force and great deeds, endowed with wisdom, you have spread out your greatness. By your own power, O mighty one, your two hands grasp the golden thunderbolt. As a sage, a seer, you advanced to the ancient city, shining with the radiance of the sun, your spirit tireless and unwearied. The twice-born priest, Agni, stands shining across the three heavens and all the regions, most worthy of sacrifice, seated in the waters. This is that priest, the twice-born, who established all precious things for fame; the mortal who offers to him with Soma gains blessings. Agni, today, with our praises, may we attain the swift horse and the good resolve that stirs the heart, with your help. Thus, Agni, you have become the charioteer of good resolve, wise, righteous, and great. With these hymns, be near to us, Agni, with all your gracious faces—bring us radiant light. O Agni, offspring of Vivasvat’s dawns, bring the splendid, immortal gift to the worshipper; O Jātavedas, awaken the gods today. For you are the beloved messenger, the carrier of offerings, O Agni, charioteer of the rites; together with the Ashvins, grant us heroic strength and great fame. The young one, though gray-haired, has awakened among many in the assembly; see the divine wisdom of the god—yesterday he died, today he is born anew. By his power, the strong, the ruddy, the eagle—ever heroic, ever steadfast—perceives truth as his food; his wealth is never in vain, for he is both conqueror and giver. With these qualities, he bestows manly powers and heroic deeds, with which the wielder of the thunderbolt poured for the slaying of Vṛtra. From that great act, the gods were born, apart from the act itself. This Soma has been pressed; the Maruts drink of it, as do the radiant Ashvins. Mitra, Aryaman, and Varuna also partake of the pure Soma, each according to their share, from the threefold vessel. And Indra, too, delights in the rich Soma, like a morning priest rejoicing in its pleasure. You are great, O Sūrya; you are Aditya, the mighty one. Your greatness is supreme among all who are great; by your vastness, O god, you are truly great. By your fame and power, O Sūrya, you are foremost among gods—Asurya, the priest, the all-pervading, unassailable light. Come to us with your steeds, O lord of delights, to the pressed Soma; come to us with your steeds, to the Soma. Indra, slayer of Vṛtra, wise and hundred-powered, come to us with your steeds, to the Soma. For you, O Vṛtra-slayer, are the protector of these Somas—come to us with your steeds, to the Soma. Offer to the great one, the ever-increasing, the wise; create good favor. Let the ancient peoples move forward, O leaders of men. To the broad-minded, the mighty, the sages generate beautiful praise for Indra. The wise never transgress his commands. The hymns have established Indra, unconquerable in spirit, as king, together with other kings, for companionship, for the tawny-horsed one, united at the sacrificial grass. O Indra, as far as your reach extends, so far may I be master; I have entrusted the singer to your care for gifts, not for harm. I would learn, O generous one, to honor you day by day, wherever I may be. For apart from you, Maghavan, there is no other source of wealth, not even a father. Hear the call of the one who pours, O mountain-dweller; perceive the thought of the inspired one who chants. Grant us your favor, so that we may be joined with you. I do not reject your words, O mighty one, nor the praise of the powerful Asura, being wise. I always proclaim your name and your glory. For you have many offerings among men; many inspired ones invoke you. Do not let us, O Maghavan, be deprived of your favor. Raise a shout for Indra, the foremost in battle, even from afar. In every gathering, in every contest, O Vṛtra-slayer, be mindful of us when invoked. Let the bows of others be broken on the battlefield. You released the rivers, O Indra, and struck down the lowly; you shattered the frost. You are unconquered, O Indra, born for victory. You grant all desirable things. We embrace you—let the bows of others be broken on the battlefield.
