The skilled singers, versed in hymn and wisdom, raise their voices in praise, choosing Indra and Agni as the givers of wealth. Together, Indra and Agni, with a single mighty deed, shook down ninety forts of the Dāsa women, demonstrating their unmatched power. To you, Agni, whose form glows with radiant energy, we send forth our songs, full of devotion and vigor. We have come seeking your shelter, as one seeks the shade of the sun, O golden Agni, longing for your protection. Like a fierce archer, with horns sharp as a bull, Agni, you have shattered the strongholds. We seek Viśvānar Agni, lord of truth and light, whose unceasing heat sustains the ritual. He, who spreads the sacrifice and radiates the highest light, releases the seasons at his will. In beloved abodes, Agni shines alone in splendor with his kin, embodying the desire of what has been and what will be. Agni, born of ancient wisdom, grows through the poet’s insight, shining with his own form—the third eighth part. I call upon Agni, descendant of strength, whose pure flames bless this sacred rite and sacrifice. May you, Agni of great might, be our friend; with your bright flame, sit here on the sacred grass with the gods. Let your powers rise up, stone-splitter, breaking the demon and driving away all who oppose us. With this strength, you have struck down enemies at the meeting of chariots and at the prize; praise to him who, fearless, has protected us. None can withstand the laws of this flowing one; break apart those who challenge you in battle. The exhilarating, golden one is urged on—the swift horse among the rivers, the drop, eager for Indra and full of desire. Indra, come with your splendid horses adorned with peacock feathers; let none restrain you—not even the binders—come as an archer overcomes his target. You, destroyer of Vṛtra, break the enclosure, shatter the strongholds, born of water and charioteer of bay steeds; Indra, you have broken even the firmest. You foster deep resolve like the ocean; you grant rich pasture like cows; as rivers flow to a lake, so do you gather abundance. As a bull, thirsty, comes to water without turning away, so come to us, to our ancestors and to us; join the Kanvas, drink with us. Let the pressed Somas delight you, generous Indra, for the one who offers gifts; you drank the best Soma in the bowl and took the strength. You alone, O god of great might, are praised; no one else but you, generous Indra, is the helper of mortals—these words I speak to you. May your gifts and aid never fail us, O generous one; let them never be diminished—measure out all human treasures for the peoples. The shining daughter of heaven is seen, rising and spreading as the sun’s sister. Like a bright, red horse, the mother of cows, rich in milk, Dawn has become the friend of the Aśvins. She is the friend of the Aśvins, the mother of cows, and Dawn, you are the mistress of wealth. This new Dawn shines forth, beloved of heaven; I praise you, great Aśvins, for your beauty. You two wondrous ones, mothers of the river, bestowers of wealth, wise gods, knowers of riches through intelligence. Your praises resound across the broad earth; may your chariot, O Aśvins, come with abundance. O Dawn, bring us splendid wealth, endowed with swift horses, by which we may sustain offspring and descendants. Dawn, come today to us here, in this place rich in cattle and horses; shine forth for us, bestowing glory and truthfulness. Yoke today, O Dawn, your red horses to the chariot endowed with strength; then bring to us all blessings. O Aśvins, bring near to us your chariot filled with cows and gold, O wondrous ones, with united mind, for our journey. Here let the gods, bringers of delight, wondrous ones with golden wheels, come swiftly to the pressing of Soma. As far as you have made the song and the light for people from the sky, so, O Aśvins, bring us nourishment. I consider Agni to be that treasure, to whom the cows come, to whom the swift horses hasten, who always brings strength and nourishment to the worshippers. For Agni, the friend of all people, gives strength to the tribe; Agni, pleased, goes to the self-created wealth; bring nourishment to the worshippers. That Agni, whom I praise as the treasure, to whom the cows gather, to whom the swift and well-born horses come, bring nourishment to the worshippers. Awaken us today, O Dawn, to great wealth, O radiant one, as you have awakened us before—in truthfulness, noble birth, horses, and fair speech. You who have arisen with good guidance, with a shining chariot, O daughter of the sky, arise with strength, in truthfulness, noble birth, horses, and fair speech. May she, the gracious one, arise for us today, O daughter of the sky, who has arisen with strength, in truthfulness, noble birth, horses, and fair speech.
