We call upon you, Agni, radiant one anointed with ghee, your splendor shining forth, the ever-watchful who beholds the sun itself. Come, and bring the divine hosts here, that we may rejoice in their presence. O wise Agni, we kindle you as the leader of our sacrifice, resplendent and exalted at the sacred rite. Stand at the forefront, guiding our ceremony with your brilliance. Guard us, Agni, with your protection in the contest of Gāyatra, for you are ever worthy of praise in every gathering. Bestow upon us wealth that prevails in assemblies—unmatched, unconquered in every contest—so that we may prosper through your favor. With your gracious guidance, Agni, bring us riches that nourish all and grant us happiness throughout our lives. May our thoughts urge you forward, Agni, swift as a chariot in competition; with you at our side, may we gain wealth upon wealth. With your strength and your hosts, help us gather cattle, and drive forth abundance for us, so that we may offer generous gifts. Bring to us, Agni, vast and plentiful wealth, rich in cattle; clear the path before us and sharpen our edge, as a smith tempers a blade. Raise, Agni, the unfading star—the sun—in the sky; place its light there for all people. You are the beacon of humankind, most beloved, best seated among us; remain awake to our hymns and grant us strength. As the crown of heaven and the lord of earth, you stir the seeds in the waters, sustaining all creation. You, Agni, are the master of precious gifts; may I, your singer, find lordship and protection in your care. Your pure ones rise up, your radiant flames shine forth, and your lights blaze in glory. Seventh, second, half—what is your kinship among us, Agni? Who is the generous sacrificer, and in whom do you dwell? You are our kin, Agni, the friend Mitra, beloved and praiseworthy among companions. Offer on our behalf to Mitra and Varuna, and to all the gods and the great truth; conduct your own household rite with care. Worthy of praise and reverence, dispeller of darkness, visible to all—Agni is kindled, mighty and strong. As a swift horse bearing the gods, mighty Agni is enkindled, and those who offer worship praise him. We, the mighty, kindle you, O mighty Agni, with mighty ones; shine forth, great one. Your lofty flames rise up, O Agni, and your radiance shines for all to see. Let my ladles approach you, Agni, with clarified butter; delight in our offerings. I praise you, Agni, gracious priest, timely officiant, brilliant and shining—may you hear our call. Protect us, Agni, with one, with two, with three, and with four songs; O lord of nourishment, O gracious one, guard us on every side. Shield us from all harm and evil; grant us victory in contests. We seek you, nearest to the gods, that we may flourish. When your flame is kindled, O king, fierce and skillful, it appears splendid and wise, shining with great light, purifying the darkness. When you, by your form, envelop the dark one, you generate the dawn from the great father; you uphold the sun’s radiance, and your flame shines forth with the gifts of heaven. The good draws near the good; the lover approaches his sister from behind; Agni stands upright, marked by clear signs and bright colors, settling in delight. By what praise, O Agni Angiras, child of strength, may we honor you and win your favor? For whom, and with what purpose, should we serve the sacrifice, the might, and the strength? To whom should we offer this reverence? Then, Agni, you make for us all prosperous dwellings, granting strength and riches through your songs. Come to us with your fires; as Hotar we choose you. May the one bearing offerings call you; most fit for sacrifice, come and sit upon the sacred grass. To you, son of strength, Angiras, the ladles move at the rite; we seek you, Agni, child of strength, with hair bright as ghee, ancient in sacrifice. May our songs reach you, radiant one, most beautiful; may our reverent offerings go to you, much-praised and glorious, for aid. Agni, son of strength, knower of all births, bestower of treasures—you alone among mortals are the immortal Hotar, most delightful, most distinguished. Unassailable Agni, leader of peoples, swift as a chariot, ever new—by your shining flame, the worshipper, carried by your conveyance, reaches his dwelling; by your purity, mortals attain their home. You summon all rivals, fulfilling the will of the gods, tireless—Agni, most renowned. May you, when invoked, be auspicious for us; may your gifts, our offerings, and our praises all be auspicious, O fortunate one. Make our minds auspicious, so we may overcome obstacles, as you do in battle; strengthen our bodies, so we may win much for your favor. Agni, lord of strength, abounding in cattle, power, and might—grant us, knower of all births, great renown.
