You are the stream that nourishes all rivers and the life within them, the flow that brings vitality to young women; you are the lord of the cows, O unassailable one, and you ensure the sustenance of the milch cows. May the god, the generous giver of wealth, pour forth an abundant stream for you; let him pour it out and fill it up, for the god himself has called you to receive this bounty. It was the gods who made Agni, the wise priest of sacrifice, the sacred fire who bestows treasures and excellent strength upon those who worship with devotion. Agni, the most skillful in finding the path, has been seen—he in whom the sacred laws are firmly established. May our hymns never fail to reach this noble-born one who is present among us. There are those from whom people turn away, even as they perform their deeds; yet, like those who possess a thousand treasures, let us honor Agni always in our thoughts. Agni, the god, the son of Devodāsa, has expanded his presence by his might, like Indra; he has spread across the earth, his mother, and stands protected under the shelter of the sky. Agni, you purify our lives, bringing us swift vigor and food; drive far from us all evil and harm. You, the sage and purifier, belonging to the five peoples, the household priest—we seek you, the great one, worthy of praise. Agni, purify yourself with wisdom for us; grant us brilliance and heroic strength, and bestow wealth and a wife upon me. O shining and pure Agni, with your delightful tongue, lead the gods here and offer to them. We invoke you, Agni, anointed with ghee, of splendid light, who sees the sun—bring the gods here for our enjoyment. You, wise Agni, we kindle as the leader of the sacrifice, radiant and great at the ritual. Protect us, Agni, with your aid in the contest of Gāyatra; you who are worthy of praise in all assemblies. Bring us, Agni, wealth that conquers in assemblies, most excellent, unconquered in all battles. With your good guidance, Agni, bring us wealth that nourishes all and grant us happiness for life. May our thoughts urge Agni forward, like a swift chariot in contests; with him may we win wealth after wealth. With your might, Agni, may we gather the cows, with your army and strength—drive that for us for the sake of gifts. Bring us abundant, wide, and cattle-rich wealth; make the path clear, sharpen the edge as a smith sharpens a blade. Agni, raise the unfading star, the sun, in the sky; place the light for the people. You are the beacon of the people, most beloved, best seated; remain awake for our hymn, granting us strength. Agni is the crown of heaven, the lord of earth; he stirs the seeds of the waters. You are the master of precious gifts, O Agni; may I, the singer, be lord under your protection. O Agni, your pure ones rise up; your radiant flames shine forth, your lights blaze. Seventh, second, half—what is your kinship among people, Agni? Who is the generous sacrificer, and in whom are you established? You are the kin of humankind, Agni; you are Mitra, the beloved friend, praiseworthy among companions. Offer for us to Mitra and Varuna, offer to the gods, to the great truth; Agni, conduct your own household rite. Worthy of praise, to be revered, dispeller of darkness, visible—Agni is kindled, mighty. Mighty Agni is kindled, like a horse bearing the gods; those with offerings praise him. We, the mighty, kindle you, O mighty Agni, with mighty ones; shine forth, O Agni, great one. Lofty flames of the kindled fire rise up; O Agni, radiant ones shine forth. Let my ladles approach you, O Agni, with clarified butter; delight in our offerings. I praise Agni, the gracious priest, the seasonal officiant, of brilliant radiance, shining forth; may he hear. Guard us, Agni, with one, with a second, with three songs, lord of nourishment, guard with four, O gracious one. Guard us from all harm and evil; grant us success in contests. We seek you, nearest to the gods, for increase. When, O king, the flame is kindled, fierce for skill and splendid, it appears—wise, shining with great light, the bright one purifies the darkness. When you, by your form, envelop the dark one, you generate the dawn from the great father; you uphold the sun’s radiance, and the flame shines forth with the gifts of heaven. The good one comes together with the good; the lover approaches his sister from behind; Agni stands upright with clear signs, with bright colors, and settles in delight. By what praise, Agni Angiras, child of strength, may we honor you, O god, for your favor? For whom, with what intent, should we serve the sacrifice, the might, the strength? To whom should this reverence be spoken? Then, indeed, you make for us all prosperous dwellings, O giver of strength and riches, with your songs.
