In the sacred gatherings of seekers, the offering is made with reverence, calling upon mighty Indra to be present among all assemblies. Hymns and libations are directed to the great slayer of Vritra, inviting him with praise, for he is the foremost giver of wealth and truly the lord of riches. The devotees choose Indra, the mighty one, as the worthy son born of strength and greatness. In ages past, the ancient and nourishing ones, praiseworthy and primeval, drew forth the essence of heaven. At Indra’s birth, the great ones sang together, their voices united in celebration. Some, with clear vision, approached those ancient, radiant treasures of the heavens—shining like the sun himself, as Savitar stretches out the sky’s covering. O Purifier, when you move, your might encompasses both earth and heaven and all living beings. Like a bull among herds, you shine forth in your splendor. Now, Agni, companion of mortals, let this new song of praise be proclaimed among the gods. O radiant one, you are divided like the waves of a river, yet you swiftly flow to the worshipper, bestowing gifts upon those who seek you. Grant us a share in the highest blessings, in the rewards, and teach us wisdom in the middle path; O generous one, guide us to the prize at the end as well. I have grasped the wisdom of the immortal father and, like the sun, I was born anew. With ancient birth, I adorn the hymns as the Kanvas once did, by which Indra acquired his strength. Some sages praised you, Indra, and some did not, yet you are well praised by those who sing your glory. Agni, be pleased with our prayer, together with all the divine and long-lived fires; with them, exalt our hymns. Agni advances with all the fires, his offspring strong, surrounded by us with fitting rewards. Agni, with the fires, inspire us for prayer and sacrifice; urge us to give wealth for the sake of divinity. In you, Soma, the ancient ones placed the sacred grass for great prize and fame; so you, hero, urge us to heroism. You have pierced through with fame, like an unstoppable stream, like a bearer with arrows in hand. The immortal was born for mortals, according to immortal law and beauty; always bringing reward, may it ever be sought. Pour the Soma for Indra, for he drinks the honeyed Soma and, by his greatness, spurs on the rewards. I spoke to the lord of steeds who grants rewards; now listen to the praise of the horse. O friend, none before nor now have equaled your heroism—neither in wealth, nor in ways, nor in bonds. You are the stream of rivers, the stream of young women; you are the lord of cows, unassailable and nourishing the herds. May the god, giver of wealth, pour out the full stream for you; let it flow and fill, for the god has called you. The gods made Agni, the wise priest of the sacrifice, the fire who bestows treasure and excellent strength upon the devoted worshipper. He, most skilled in finding the path, is seen in whom the sacred laws are established; may our songs never fail to reach the noble-born one who is present. From him, people turn away while performing their deeds; yet, like those who possess a thousand treasures, honor Agni with your thoughts. Agni, son of Devodāsa, has expanded by his might like Indra; he spreads across the earth, his mother, and stands sheltered by the sky. Agni, you purify our lives, bring us swift vigor and food, and drive far away all evil and harm. Agni, the sage and purifier, belonging to the five peoples and the household priest, is the great one we seek and praise. Agni, purify yourself with wisdom for us; grant us brilliance, heroic strength, wealth, and a wife. Agni, shining and pure, with your delightful tongue, bring the gods here and offer to them. We invoke you, Agni, anointed with ghee, of splendid light, who sees the sun; bring the gods here for our joy. You, wise Agni, we kindle as leader of the sacrifice, radiant and great at the ritual. Protect us, Agni, with your aid in the contest of Gāyatra; you are worthy of praise in all gatherings. Bring us, Agni, wealth that conquers in assemblies, most excellent and unconquered in all battles. With your good guidance, bring us nourishing wealth and grant us happiness for life. May our thoughts urge Agni forward, like a swift chariot in contests; with him, may we win wealth after wealth. With your army and strength, Agni, may we gather the cows—drive that for us for the sake of gifts. Bring us abundant, wide, and cattle-rich wealth; make the path clear, sharpen the edge as a smith does a blade. Agni, raise the unfading star, the sun, in the sky; place the light for the people. You are the beacon of the people, most beloved and best seated; be awake for the hymn, granting us strength.
