At the sacred offerings, as the worshippers desire, they establish a support in heaven itself, directing their homage and bliss to Indra and Agni. Among all beings, the greatest is that one from whom the fierce and mighty is born; and as soon as he comes into being, he overcomes his foes, and all the goddesses rejoice in his presence. This mighty one grows in strength and vigor, striking fear into the hearts of the enemy for the sake of the Dasa. He protects and scatters, he conquers, and at the moments of giving and in festive delights, people bow to him. Within you, all seek wisdom; when these two become three, the delights reach their sweetest. Sweeter than sweet, the exhilaration pours forth, honey blended with honeyed draughts. At the three-wooded press, the buffalo, brimming with barley-mixed strength and great might, drank the pressed Soma with Vishnu as he wished. He rejoiced in it, preparing to perform a great deed; the true god walked with the god, the true Soma with true Indra. Born together with power and might, you grew, and with strength you excelled in heroic deeds. You conquered your foes, wise one, giver of desired wealth to those who praise you; the true god accompanied the god, the true Soma accompanied true Indra. Then, with surpassing might and strength, he became fierce in battle, filling the two worlds with his greatness. He grew immense, took another into his belly, and shone forth; the true god accompanied the god, the true Soma accompanied true Indra. Now, sing the seventh, the first portion, to the lord of the cows, to Indra of the mountains, as is fitting, to the true lord of truth. The bays are set in motion, the ruddy ones rest on the sacred grass, where we assemble together. For Indra, the cows have milked out the barley-mixed draught; for the wielder of the bolt, the honey is found in the gathering. May our offering summon Indra in all assemblies; let hymns and libations approach the slayer of Vritra, the most mighty, with praise. You are the first giver of wealth, truly the lord of riches; we choose you, mighty one, as the worthy son of strength and greatness. The ancient, nourishing, primeval, and praiseworthy ones have been milked forth from heaven; they sang together at Indra’s birth. Some, seeing, have approached the ancient, watery, shining treasures of heaven; like the sun, Savitar spreads the covering of the sky. O Purifier, when you move, you encompass these two worlds and all beings with your might; like a bull among herds, you shine forth in splendor. Now, Agni, proclaim for us this new song of praise among the gods, as our companion. You are divided, O radiant one, like the waves of a river; you swiftly flow toward the worshipper, bestowing gifts. Grant us a share in the highest, in the prizes, and teach us in the middle; O giver, grant to us even at the end. Indeed, I have grasped the wisdom of the immortal father; I was born like the sun. With ancient birth, I adorn the hymns like the Kanvas, by which Indra acquired strength. Those sages who did not praise you, Indra, and those who did, you are well praised by both. Agni, be pleased with our prayer, together with all the fires, O mighty one; may those who are divine and long-lived exalt our hymns. Agni, together with all the fires, advances; his offspring are strong, and we surround him with fitting prizes. Agni, with the fires, inspire us for prayer and sacrifice; urge us to give wealth for the sake of divinity. In you, Soma, the first ones placed the sacred grass for great prize and fame; so you, hero, urge us to heroism. You have pierced through with fame, like a stream that none can hold back, like a bearer with arrows in his hands. The immortal was born for mortals, according to the law of the immortal and its beauty; always bringing prize, let it be sought. Pour the Soma for Indra; he drinks the honeyed Soma and, by his greatness, urges on the rewards. I spoke to the lord of the steeds, who grants rewards; now listen to the praise of the horse. Indeed, O friend, never before nor now has anyone been more heroic than you; neither in wealth, nor in ways, nor in bonds. You are the stream of the rivers, the stream of the young women; you are the lord of the cows, O unassailable one, nourishing the milch cows. May the god, giver of wealth, pour out the full stream for you; pour it out, fill it up, for the god has called you. The gods made Agni, the wise priest of the sacrifice, the fire who bestows treasure and excellent strength upon the worshipper who offers with devotion. He, the most skilled in finding the path, has been seen, in whom the sacred laws are established; may our songs not fail to reach the noble-born one who is present. From whom the peoples turn away while performing their deeds; like those who possess a thousand treasures, honor Agni with your thoughts. Agni, the god, the son of Devodāsa, has expanded like Indra by his might; he has spread over the earth, his mother, and stands in the shelter of the sky. Agni, you purify our lives, bring us swift vigor and food; drive far away from us all evil and harm. Agni, the sage, the purifier, belonging to the five peoples, the household priest—we seek him, the great and worthy of praise. Agni, purify yourself with wisdom for us; grant us brilliance and heroic strength, bestow wealth and a wife upon me. Agni, shining and pure, with your delightful tongue, O god, lead the gods here and offer to them.
