We begin by contemplating the splendid radiance of Savitar, the divine power whose brilliance inspires our minds and hearts. In the sacred ritual, we call upon Brahmanaspati to make the sound of the Somas resound, as Kakṣīvān and the Auśija wish, filling the air with the music of devotion. Agni, the purifier, is invoked to cleanse our lives, bringing us radiant strength and nourishment, and to drive away any misfortune that may threaten us. We pray for the power of earthly greatness, the wealth of heaven, and a mighty place among the gods, all granted by the divine. Through truth, the gods align themselves with truth itself, seeking pure wisdom; unharmed and free, they grow ever stronger. The rain-giving heavens and earth, lords of abundance, seek the vastness of Dānumatī, longing for its fullness. In this cosmic activity, they harness the bright, swift one who circles the heavens, causing the shining realms above to glow. His desired steeds—red, fierce, and heroic—are yoked to the chariot, surging forward with strength and speed. For those without signs, you create signs; for the unadorned, you bring adornment, being born afresh with each dawn. Soma, pressed and purified, is offered to Indra, who must drink it, for he himself has made and strengthened the sacred drop for joy and union. Like a well-yoked chariot bringing treasures for the great, Soma rises, and all the offspring of Nahusha, born of the sun, ascend, seeking the forest’s shelter. Strong as a troop of Maruts, you purify swiftly and unharmed, O divine one. Like the waters, may you bring us good fortune, O thousand-streamed, victorious in battle, O sacrifice itself. Agni, you are the priest of all sacrifices, established among gods and humans alike. With your delightful tongues at the ritual, you worship and honor the gods, leading them to our offerings. Agni, wise and knowing all paths, guides the gods directly in our sacrifices. As the immortal, divine priest, he moves ahead by his skill, urging the rituals onward. The swift horse is yoked among the steeds, the priest is led forth at the sacrifices, and the sage becomes the means of the ritual. By wisdom, the most excellent fashioned the embryo of all beings, placing the father of skill within his offspring. At the pressing, wealth pours forth—the glory of heaven and earth—while streams nourish the mighty bull. Each knows their own utterance, like calves with their mothers, remaining with their kin and not mixing with others. At the offerings, as desired, a support is established in heaven for Indra and Agni, to whom we offer homage and bliss. Among all beings, the greatest is he from whom the fierce, mighty one was born; newborn, he overcomes foes at once, causing all goddesses to rejoice. Strength and vigor increase in him, bringing fear to the enemy for the Dasa; he scatters and conquers, and at the gifts and delights, all bow to him. In you, all seek wisdom; when two become three, the delights are sweetest—sweeter than sweet—pouring forth exhilaration, blending honey with honeyed draughts. At the three-wooded press, the mighty buffalo with barley-mixed strength drank the pressed Soma with Vishnu as he wished, rejoicing to perform a great deed. The true god accompanied the god, the true Soma accompanied true Indra. Born together with power and might, you grew and excelled in heroic deeds, conquering foes, and giving desired wealth to the praiser; again, the true god accompanied the god, the true Soma accompanied true Indra. With surpassing might and strength, he became fierce in battle, filling the two worlds with his greatness. He grew so vast that he took another into himself and shone forth anew; the true god accompanied the god, the true Soma accompanied true Indra. The seventh, the first portion, is sung to the lord of the cows, to mountain-Indra, the true lord of truth. The bays are set in motion, the ruddy ones on the sacred grass, where we assemble together. For Indra, the cows have milked out the barley-mixed draught; for the wielder of the bolt, the honey found in the gathering. May our offering summon Indra in all assemblies; let hymns and libations approach the slayer of Vritra, the most mighty, with praise. You, Indra, are the first giver of wealth, truly the lord of riches; we choose you, mighty one, as the worthy son of strength and greatness. The ancient, nourishing, primeval, and praiseworthy ones have been milked forth from heaven; they sang together at Indra’s birth. Some, seeing, have approached the ancient, watery, shining treasures of heaven; like the sun, Savitar spreads out the covering of the sky. O Purifier, when you move, you encompass these two worlds and all beings with your might; like a bull among herds, you shine in splendor. Now, Agni, proclaim for us this new song of praise among the gods, as our companion. You are divided, O radiant one, like the waves of a river; you flow swiftly toward the worshipper, bestowing gifts. Grant us a share in the highest, in the prizes, and teach us in the middle; O giver, grant to us in the end as well. Indeed, I have grasped the wisdom of the immortal father; I was born like the sun. With ancient birth, I adorn the hymns like the Kanvas, by which Indra acquired strength.
