May we be blessed by your generosity, O Giver of Gifts! Let us not fall into the hands of our enemies; may your splendid aids protect us and guide us to your favor. In the highest heaven, three times seven cows have yielded their milk for him—true and strong. He has separated four other worlds and adorned them with beauty. He, who delights in the nectar, has spread both heaven and earth with his inspired poetry. By the fame of the god, the powerful waters have grown vast, and the seat of divinity became known. These are his immortal and invincible signs, enduring through both births; by these, with heroic might and divine power, they purified themselves and seized the king with their thoughts. With hymns I praise Vāyu, and purify Mitra and Varuṇa. I purify the wise, chariot-bearing man, and mighty Indra, who wields the thunderbolt. I purify the well-clad garments, the richly-yielding cows, and the splendid, golden, horse-drawn chariots for our lord, Soma, the god. For us, I purify the divine treasures and all earthly things, so that we may attain wealth, O descendant of Jamadagni. O Maghavan, when you were born for the slaying of Vṛtra, you expanded the earth and supported both it and the heavens. Then your sacrifice was established, and with it, the hymn and bright praise were born. Thus you became lord over all that has arisen and all that lives. Within the sacred vessels, let the offering be prepared; let the sun rise in the sky, let the song shine forth adorned with beautiful praises, great for the singer. Your greatness, O tawny one, is drunk with as much longing as a fish drinks water, or as one thirsts for the cup. Your mighty Soma, O bull, is abundant in rewards, bringing a thousandfold gifts. Let your desire come to us, O bull; let the noble exhilaration find us. Mighty Indra, victorious in battle, bring us the reward! For you are the hero, the winner, the driver of men’s chariots. You destroy the lawless enemy, shining like a cup of fire. Purify, in the sixth, third, and half measures; bring us rain! Let the wave of waters from heaven, great and free from illness, nourish us. Purify with that stream by which the cows, born for us, have come home. Purify the ghee with the stream, beloved by the gods in sacrifice; bring us rain, purify! Flow for us with strength, O stream, through the purifier; let the gods hear our desire. The flowing one has shattered obstacles and driven away enemies, shining with ancient lights. Bring to him who desires, who knows all things, for the one who is ready to journey, and for those who follow the path. With these, approach him—with the Somās, the drinker of Soma; with the pure, the strong, the pressed drops, approach Indra. If, O wise one, you adorn the Vedas with pressed drops and moons of Soma, then you, the intelligent, set forth the strong thread of the universe. O Adhvaryu, bring forth the Soma for us from this pressed juice; perhaps he will grant us the praiseworthy, the desired, the song of praise. Sing a hymn to the tawny, self-powerful, ruddy, sky-touching Soma. Purify the pressed Soma with stones released by the hand; let the sweet juice flow, let the honey run. Bow down, sit near, listen attentively; place the drop, the moon, in Indra. Flow, Soma, slayer of foes, wise among peoples! Bring blessing to the cow, to the gods, fulfilling their desire. Soma, you are poured out for Indra to drink, for exhilaration; even the mind, lord of the mind, is poured out. O purified Soma, grant us heroic strength and wealth; unite us with Indra, O drop. O Sun, you rise with your rays, bringing fame and strength, driving away evil, and removing darkness. He, with the strength of his arms, broke ninety-nine fortresses and slew the serpent, the slayer of Vṛtra. May that gracious Indra, our friend, rich in horses, cattle, and food, milk for us like a cow with abundant streams. Let the shining one drink the great Soma, holding the sacrifice, bestower of life, delighting in the offering. Driven by the wind, he protects by his own power, nourishes the people, and shines forth in many ways. The shining one, greatly upheld and bestower of strength, upholds the law, established in the seat of heaven; slayer of foes, destroyer of Vṛtra, most powerful against the Dasyus—light is born, slayer of demons and rivals. This is the highest, best light of all lights, called the conqueror of all, the winner of wealth, the great, all-shining Sun, whose brilliance spreads widely, firm in strength and power. O Indra, bring us wisdom, as a father brings his sons; teach us, O much-invoked one, in this dwelling, so that we may attain living light. Let not unknown or hostile people, nor evil-doers, overcome us; with you, O hero, may we always cross over the flowing waters safely. Today, tomorrow, and every day, O Indra, protect us. O lord of the good, guard all our singers by day and by night. The generous hero, Maghavan, mighty in gifts, is ready for battle. Both your strong arms, O hundred-powered one, have fitted the thunderbolt together for strength. We call upon Sarasvatī, who grants abundant offspring and generous gifts, to bless us. May Sarasvatī, beloved among beloved sisters, well-pleased, become worthy of our praise.
