Whoever calls upon you, O Indra, with abundant offerings, truly receives the gift of your fierce and unstoppable might. We wonder, when will Indra strike down the lawless among mortals, as easily as one crushes a clod beneath the foot? When will he incline his ear to our songs? The singers lift their voices to you, the chanters praise you with their hymns, and the priests, O Indra of a hundred powers, yoke you like a swift horse to the sacrificial post. When you, mighty Indra, ascend from peak to peak, performing wondrous deeds, you perceive the goal; you, the great bull, move forward with your troop. Yoke now your tawny, mighty steeds, O Indra, who carry you swiftly. Come to us, O Soma-drinker, and listen to the sound of our songs. Agni, well-kindled, bring the gods here for this one offering. O pure Hotar, accept our oblation. Wise one, make for us today a sacrifice rich in sweetness, pleasing to our bodies, among the gods, for this invocation. Here I call upon Narāśaṃsa, beloved at this sacrifice, with honeyed tongue, for the prepared offering. O Agni, come in your most pleasant chariot, bring the gods who are praised. You are the Hotar, established by Manu. And when, at sunrise today, Mitra, Aryaman, Savitar, and Bhaga—sinless ones—bestow their favor, let their blessings fall upon us. That destruction, O generous one, is mighty indeed; may it come forth and overcome those who would seek to cross our distress. May Aditi, sovereign of the shining realm, unbroken in her vow, and those great kings who rule, protect us always. May the Somas gladden you, Indra; grant us your favor, stone-wielder, and strike down those who hate the sacred word. With your foot, O mighty one, drive away the stingy, for none can withstand you. You are the lord of both pressed and unpressed offerings, Indra; you are king of the peoples. Awake, O inspired one, for true thoughts; Soma, being purified, has entered the vessels. The priests, skilled and dexterous, pour him out, as loving couples pursue their desire. Purified, Soma is placed near the sun, embracing both heaven and earth. Even his beloveds, with their dearest aid, do not withhold wealth from the righteous one. May Soma, growing and purified, rich in gifts, bring us light—where our forefathers, knowing the path and the sun, have gone before us, crossing the stone. Speak not of anything else, friends, nor falter; praise Indra, the mighty, together with the pressed Soma, and utter hymns again and again. Like a young bull, powerful and unconquered, who draws the cows, who dispels hatred, brings together both sides, benefits all, and is most mighty, victorious over all—so too is Indra. The sweetest songs rise up, hymns of praise, like inexhaustible, wealth-bringing chariots of Satrājit. As the Kanvas, as the Bhṛgus, as the sun himself, all have sought the kindled flame. The eager ones, with hymns, magnified Indra; the Priyamedhas sang aloud. May you, O Soma, move among our enemies for strength, overcome obstacles, and drive away haters as a debtor pays his debt. For you, O purified one, have indeed generated the sun by your power, and the flowing milk, hastening with the cows, with Purandhi. We delight in you, O pressed Soma, in the great sovereignty of battle; O purified one, you rush forth to the prize. Pour forth on every side, O sweet Soma, for Indra, for Mitra, for Pūṣan, for Bhaga. Thus, for the immortal, for the great dwelling, let that bright, heavenly, nourishing stream flow. O Indra, may this pressed Soma be drunk by you, and by all the gods, for wisdom and skill. Like sunrays eager to disperse, passions are born together and move as one; the threads are woven, desires encircle, and without Indra, the vital energies do not move toward any abode. The thought is drawn forth, poured out like honey; the deep-sounding one stirs within, and in the midst of the thunderbolt, the purifying one flows forth—sweet and exhilarating for those who press, sweeping away the covering. The bull bellows, the cows return, and the divine ones go to the divine’s outpouring; Soma has crossed over the shining barrier, the inexhaustible, like a garment unstained, he has enveloped it. Men, with their shining rays, generate Agni from the two kindling woods, released by the hand—the renowned one, far-seeing, lord of the house, ever to be invoked. That Agni, O Vasus, you have placed among men, with clear vision, for help from wherever needed; he who is ever skillful in the home. Shine forth brightly, O Agni, before us with unfailing radiance, youngest one; ever do the prizes come to you. This spotted cow has stepped forth, she approaches her mother and her father, seeking her own abode. He moves within the shining realms, from his breath and exhalation; the great bull has revealed the sky. He shines in thirty abodes, the word is set for the swift one; each day he approaches the dwelling with the bright ones. As we approach the sacrifice, let us speak the mantra to Agni, for those far and for those who listen to us. He who was foremost among companions, who has come together among peoples, protected life for the worshipper. May Agni, the knower, protect our household, most peaceful one; and may he guard us from harm.
