Indra, the thousand-armed lord, drank the pressed soma of the Kadruvas, and there, in that sacred act, he attained his full manly strength. We, his devoted worshippers, praise him, calling upon his might and generosity to recognize us as his own. Among those who kindle the sacred fire and spread the holy grass, Indra is the youthful friend, ever present and supportive. We beseech Indra to shatter our haters, drive away obstacles, and strike down our foes, bringing us that most desirable wealth. Listen now to the sound of whips in hand, as the splendid team is adorned and driven forward. Those friends who offer Soma look upon Indra as nourishing, just as cattle are precious to their owner. Before the wrath of this mighty one, all peoples bow, as rivers flow to the ocean, acknowledging his power. We choose the greatness of the gods for our aid, that strength may flow to us. O Brahmanaspati, let the sound of the Somas resound, just as Kakṣīvant, the son of Uśij, once did. Let Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, mindful and attentive, be present for us; may Śakra hear our prayer and grant us abundant aid. Today, divine Savitar, grant us offspring and good fortune, and drive away evil dreams. Where is Indra’s youthful, unyielding bull with mighty neck? Who, as priest, worships him? At the foot of the mountains, where rivers meet, an inspired sage was born through thought. Let us praise Indra, king of peoples, subduer of men, the most mighty, with fresh songs. The second half of the second verse is dedicated to Indra, the swift drinker of Soma, skillful, mighty, and barley-bearded. To you, possessor of many treasures, our songs are sent forth like cows to their calf, O Indra. Here, they have followed the name of the cow, the hidden one of Tvaṣṭṛ, thus in the house of the moon. When Indra, unhonored, led forth the great, most powerful waters, Pūṣan became his companion. The cow, famed among the Maruts, mother of the generous, is yoked as fire to the chariots. Come to us, Lord of delights, with your bays; come with your bays to the pressed Soma. The desired offerings have flowed, increasing Indra’s strength at the sacrifice, guiding us towards the Avabhṛtha. I have taken the wisdom of the immortal from my father; I was born like the sun. May abundant gatherings, rich in strength, be with us in Indra; with these, full of might, may we rejoice. Soma and Pūṣan have perceived all prosperous dwellings; for the gods, two chariots are prepared. May you all sing forth to Indra for the Soma drink; I, the all-conquering, the most mighty among men, praise the hundred-powered. Sing, friends, to Indra, the exhilarator, the tawny-horsed, the Soma-drinker. We, your friends, Kanvas, approach you, Indra, for this purpose, rejoicing with hymns. Let our songs resound around the pressed Soma for Indra, the joyous; let the poets praise with hymns. This Soma, purified for you, Indra, is set upon the sacred grass; come, drink its flowing essence. For the granting of beautiful forms, we offer to you, as one milks a cow rich in milk, O ever-shining one. To you, the bull, at the pressing of Soma, I pour out the pressed drink for your enjoyment; be satisfied, partake of the delight. O Indra, the Soma pressed in cups and vessels is yours; drink of it, for you are lord of it. In union and reunion, with strength upon strength, we call Indra, our friend, for aid in the contest. Come here and be seated, Indra; let us sing forth together, O friends, with voices full of praise. This pressed Soma is indeed for you, Lord of gifts; drink it, O singer, with your might. May Indra, mighty, be foremost for us; may greatness belong to the wielder of the thunderbolt; may the heavens never limit his power. Come, Indra, grasp for us the splendid prize, rich in land, with your great right hand. Sing forth to the lord of herds, to Indra of the mountains, as is fitting, to the son of truth, the true master. By what wondrous means does our ever-growing friend become our messenger? By what most powerful support is he chosen? That mighty one who conquers in gatherings—offer him your songs in all assemblies, for stirring and aid.
