Swelling with riches and vigor, Soma, the golden-hued one, journeys forth, crossing the roughest places and descending into sacred resting-places. The ten fingers of the priests press this tawny, radiant juice for its journey, preparing it with care and devotion, for it is the most exhilarating, armed with its own divine power. Guarded and veiled, Soma rides his bull-chariot toward the thousandfold prize, his path protected and auspicious. The women of Trita, with stones in hand, skillfully press this tawny drop, preparing it as a precious offering for Indra’s delight. Among men, Soma sits in the settlements like a watchful falcon, moving with the swiftness and passion of a lover seeking his beloved. As the intoxicating juice reveals itself—child of heaven, entering the sacred vessel—it rushes forth, roaring and eager for its cherished abode. The ten bright ones purify this golden Soma, making him shine with exhilaration. Like a swift steed set in motion by men, Soma, lord of all-knowing minds, races unhindered toward his destined goal. Pressed for the gods, Soma flows ceaselessly through the purifier, entering all abodes, his divine presence pervading the world. Immortal in his womb, Soma shines forth as a god, the slayer of Vritra, beloved above all by the gods. Roaring mightily, urged by his kin in tenfold ways, he rushes towards the sacred vessels. Pavamana, the purified Soma, has illuminated the sun in the sky; in the purifier, his exhilarating joy is stirred. United with the radiant sun, he beams alongside Vivasvat, master of speech, unassailable in his brilliance. Praised and purified, this sage delights in the purifier, cleansing and destroying foes. Poured for Indra and Vayu, Soma, the bringer of light, accomplishes skill within the purifier. As a bull, pressed and led by men, he moves through the woods, the head of heaven, knower of all things. Desiring cows, Pavamana shines, his golden hue victorious in assemblies as he is poured out. Purified and powerful, Soma surges through the midspace, seeking Indra, cleansing and shining. For the unassailable, this godly and heroic Soma, the dispeller of evil speech, surges purified and strong. Flowing for drinking, this mighty Soma destroys demons and evil, his divine presence unmistakable. Discerning and golden, Soma rushes, roaring, towards his womb, flowing in the purifier. Like a celestial steed, Pavamana runs through the shining realms of heaven, slaying demons and reaching the unfailing goal. Upon the summit of Trita, Pavamana, with his kin, has illuminated the sun, bringing light to all. Soma, the bull, pressed and victorious, slayer of Vritra, grants wide space to the unassailable, rushing like a swift steed. Inspired by the sage, this god rushes towards the vessels, magnifying Indra, the mighty one. He who recites the Pavamani hymns, the essence gathered by the seers, partakes of all that is purified and delightful through the breath of life. To such a reciter, Sarasvati herself bestows milk, clarified butter, honey, and water. The Pavamani hymns, ever-yielding and flowing with ghee, bring welfare and are placed as immortality among the Brahmins. May these hymns establish for us this world and the next, these goddesses joined together by the gods. With that thousand-streamed flow by which the gods purify themselves, may the Pavamani hymns purify us. Through these welfare-bringing hymns, one attains delight, eats blessed foods, and reaches immortality. With great reverence, we approach the youngest, the radiant one kindled in his own home, shining between heaven and earth, invoked from all sides. By his greatness, Agni, the summoner, removes all evils from the house; may he, knower of beings, protect us from harm and misfortune, and grant us gifts as we praise him. You, Varuna, and also Mitra, along with Agni, are honored by the Vasisthas with their thoughts; may your treasures be most delightful, and may you always protect us with your blessings. Great is Indra by his strength, like a rain-bringing cloud, growing strong through praises like a calf. When the Kanvas made Indra the accomplisher of sacrifice with their hymns, let the kinsman speak of his weapons. When the fires, bearers of the immortal, bring forth offspring, the inspired ones carry the divine order with their strength. The bright streams of the purifying one have flowed, striking and ever-fresh, tended by the old ones whose flames never fade. The purifying one, the best charioteer, most radiant with shining rays, golden-bright, leads the host of the Maruts. Thus flows the story of Soma, the gods, and the sacred hymns, ever-purifying, ever-bestowing blessings and immortality upon those who honor them with devotion.
