With fervent invocation, the sages urge mighty Indra, the bull of strength, to rise for the great slaying of the foe. Indra, fashioned for mastery and vigor, stands glorious and renowned, Soma-like in his power. Through sacred speech, the thunderbolt is gathered—powerful, unfailing, fierce and unbroken—growing ever stronger. The priest, attentive to his duty, brings forth the pressed Soma with stones, purifying it so that Indra may drink. The gods, along with the Maruts, partake of the exhilarating, sweet essence of Soma as it flows. The most excellent, honey-rich Soma from heaven is pressed out for Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt. This skillful juice, the supporter of heaven, is purified. Wise and praised by gods and men, the tawny Soma is released, like a powerful steed, making the streams flow unhindered. Like a hero grasping weapons, self-luminous and eager for battle, Soma stirs Indra’s might with his companions. The pressed Soma, guided by the wise, is set in motion. O purified Soma, swelling with Indra’s power in the waves, enter the abodes; pour forth for us like lightning from a cloud, and by your wisdom, bring us enduring strength. Indra, whenever invoked by men from east, west, or north, is ever the helper of many and protector of Turvaśa. When Indra delights with Ruma, Ruśama, or Śyāvaka, the Kaṇvas honor him with hymns, calling him, the bringer of strength, to their aid. Indra hears both calls and comes near, summoned for the drinking of Soma, arriving with wisdom and might. For Indra, the sovereign bull, the wise have fashioned a seat of power; he is the first to sit upon the measure, his mind desiring Soma. Purify yourself, O god, for long life; may your exhilaration reach Indra, and ascend to Vāyu in due order. O purified Soma, you gladden us with wealth and fame; O Indu, enter the ocean. Purifying yourself, O Soma, wise and exhilarating, you drive away foes; expel those hostile to the gods. Bring us, O Indu, the most prize-winning wealth, abundant in hundreds and thousands, resplendent and victorious. We seek your favor, O giver of riches, O much-desired one; may we, O Adhrigu, be among your closest, most favored recipients of your bounty. The resounding Soma flows all around, poured out in delight; the stream, raised high in sacrifice, goes forth shining, seeking the cows. Purify yourself, O Soma, great ocean, father of the gods, upholding all realms. Shining Soma, purify yourself for the gods, for heaven and earth, and for the welfare of all beings. You are the supporter of heaven, shining, nourishing, true in your ordinances; purify yourself, O Soma, as the bringer of strength. The sages praise Agni, beloved guest, dear as a friend, like a chariot placed upon the altar; a sage worthy of praise, whom the gods have set apart among mortals. O youngest one, protect your worshippers, hear our songs; guard our offspring and yourself. Indra, grant us a secure place, beloved and renowned for sacrifices, vast as a mountain on every side, lord of heaven. Truly, O drinker of Soma, you have become both heaven and earth; Indra, you are the mighty lord of heaven for the one who presses Soma. You have always been the supporter of ancient strongholds, slayer of the Dasyu, mighty lord of heaven. Breaker of fortresses, youthful sage of boundless strength, Indra was born as upholder of all actions, wielder of the bolt, much praised. O thunderer, you opened the cave of Vala rich in cows; the gods, trembling, sought you for protection. With hymns, they sought Indra, lord of might, whose gifts are a thousand or even more abundant. He crossed the ocean, established order in the beginning, generating offspring, guardian of the world. The bull Soma, on the pure slope, grew great in the vessel, the stone resounded. Delight in us, O Vayu, for favor and gifts; delight in us, Mitra and Varuna, as we are purified; delight in us, Marut host, delight in us, gods, delight in us, heaven and earth, O god Soma. That great Soma, the mighty one, when he chose the gods as the embryo of waters, bestowed strength on Indra, O flowing one, and generated light in the sun. This immortal god is poured forth like a spreading branch, settling into the vessels. Praised by sages, this god enters the waters, bestowing treasures upon the worshipper. This strong one, Pavamana, seeks all desirable things, as a hero with his powers. This god, Pavamana, rides the chariot, rushes forth, reveals the voice and the sound. Purified by the wise and by those who keep the order, the tawny one is cleansed for the prize. Made pure, this god surpasses obstacles; Pavamana is invincible.
