Around us, Soma pours his blessings, knowing well the horses and cows, and possessing gold. His streams flow with thousandfold nourishment, encircling us with abundance. As Soma moves, he drives away all obstacles, flowing unopposed toward Indra’s abode. We call upon the purifying Soma to bring us great wealth, to defeat our foes, and to grant us heroic fame. No wealth, whether a hundredfold or stolen, can diminish Soma’s bounty when he purifies himself for giving. Flow forth, O purifier, by whose power the sun shines, stirring the waters of humanity. The sun has yoked Etaśa, the mindful purifier, for travel through the midspace. Bay horses are yoked to the chariot, and the sun is set for its journey; Soma is called Indra by those who honor him. Make Agni, the god of fire, united with his flames, the most fit for sacrifice, the messenger at our ritual. Among mortals, he is steadfast, mighty, exalted, radiant, pure, and nourished by butter. Like a horse snorting in the pasture, Agni shines forth, born of greatness, separated from Saṃvaraṇa. The wind follows his flame, and his black path is established. Newly born and mighty, Agni’s undying kindlings move, and his red smoke rises to the sky. As a messenger, Agni journeys to the gods. We urge Indra with strength for the great slaying of the foe, that he may be the mighty bull. Indra is made for mastery, most vigorous and set for strength, glorious, renowned, and Soma-like. With speech, the thunderbolt is gathered—powerful, unfailing, fierce, and unbroken, it grows. O priest, bring the pressed Soma with stones to the purifier; cleanse it for Indra to drink. The gods have partaken of Soma’s exhilarating, sweet essence, and the Maruts rejoice in its flowing. Press out the most excellent, sweet Soma from heaven, rich with honey, for Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt. The skillful juice, supporter of heaven, is purified; the wise, praised by gods and men, the tawny one, is released like a strong steed, making the streams flow unhindered. Like a hero taking up weapons, self-luminous and eager for battle, Soma stirs Indra’s might with his companions. The pressed Soma, guided by the wise, is set in motion. O purified Soma, swelling with Indra’s power in the waves, enter the abodes; pour forth for us, like lightning from a cloud, and by wisdom bring us enduring strength. O Indra, when invoked by men from the east, west, or north, you are always the helper of many, and protector of Turvaśa. Or when you delight with Ruma, Ruśama, or Śyāvaka, the Kaṇvas honor you with hymns. Indra, bringer of strength, come to their call. Indra hears both, and comes near to this speech; the generous one, summoned for the drinking of Soma, may he, most mighty, come with wisdom. For you, O sovereign bull, the wise have fashioned the seat with power; you are the first to sit upon the measure, for your mind desires Soma. Purify yourself, O god, for long life; may your exhilaration reach Indra; ascend to Vāyu in due order. O purified Soma, you gladden us with wealth and fame; O Indu, enter the ocean. Purifying yourself, O Soma, wise and exhilarating, you drive away foes; expel those who are hostile to the gods. Bring us, O Indu, the most prize-winning wealth, abundant in hundreds, bearing thousands, resplendent and victorious. We desire your favor, O giver of riches, O much-desired one; may we, O Adhrigu, be among your closest, most favored recipients of your bounty. The resounding Soma flows all around, poured out in delight; the stream, raised high in the sacrifice, goes forth shining, seeking the cows. Purify yourself, O Soma, great ocean, father of the gods, upholding all realms. Shining Soma, purify yourself for the gods, for heaven and earth, and for the welfare of all beings. You are the supporter of heaven, shining, nourishing, true in your ordinances; purify yourself, O Soma, as the bringer of strength. I praise you, Agni, beloved guest, dear as a friend, like a chariot placed on the altar. Like a sage worthy of praise, whom the gods have set apart among mortals. O youngest one, protect your worshippers, hear our songs; guard our offspring and yourself. O Indra, grant us a secure place, beloved, renowned for sacrifices, vast as a mountain on every side, lord of heaven. Truly, O drinker of Soma, you have become both heaven and earth; Indra, you are the mighty lord of heaven for the one who presses Soma. You, Indra, have always been the supporter of ancient strongholds, the slayer of the Dasyu, the mighty, lord of heaven. Breaker of fortresses, youthful sage, of boundless strength, Indra was born as the upholder of all actions, wielder of the bolt, much praised. You, O thunderer, opened the cave of Vala rich in cows; the gods, trembling, sought you for protection.
