In reverent invocation, the sages call upon Indra, the mighty crusher of foes, beseeching him to bestow splendid gifts that are not yet within their grasp. They ask Indra to grant both kinds of wealth, to bring forth treasures and blessings that only he, the generous lord, can offer. Whatever Indra deems worthy and heavenly, they urge him to bring forth, so that they may know his blazing, unfailing gifts. Indra’s mind is renowned—vast and ever-striving in all directions. With this powerful resolve, he firmly attains the prize for victory. In the sacred rites, the Maruts, with their troop, cleanse and adorn the youthful, tawny-born Soma. The sage—Soma himself—resounds with songs and poetry, surpassing the filter as he flows forth. Soma, whose mind is that of a seer and who acts as a seer, shines in heaven, guided by a thousand paths. He follows the ways of poets, seeking to shine in the third abode, reigning in splendor. The falcon, Govinda Drapsa, the carrier bearing weapons, together with the wave of waters, approaches the ocean, distinguishing the fourth abode of Soma. These Somas pour forth, fulfilling Indra’s dear desire and manifesting his heroic power. Purifying as they go, they are accompanied by the Ashvins and Vayu, and the sages pray that they grant noble strength. Soma, purifying for Indra’s favor, stirs the heart and settles in the seat of the gods. Seven inspired ones cleanse and pour forth Soma, following him in the rites. For the gods and their exhilaration, the sages send Soma forth, clothing him with cows. Purifying in the vessels, the radiant, tawny Soma spreads out garments, enveloping himself in the abundance of cows. The generous Soma flows for the people, driving away all enemies and uniting them with friendship. With human vision, the sages partake of Soma—drunk by Indra, knower of light—as nourishment for their offspring. They ask Soma to pour forth rain from the sky and strength upon the earth, granting might in battles. Soma, purifying, flows with a thousand streams, exceedingly powerful, shared between Vayu and Indra. The sages sing joyfully to the purifying, inspired Soma, the sage, for the divine feast. The Somas, praised for their thousand powers, are honored for the divine feast by those who sing. Soma is called to flow with great riches, abundant nourishment, and shining strength. Swiftly moving like racing horses, Soma is not held back by restrainers. He surges forth for the gaining of wealth, his waves unimpeded and full of energy. May those Soma drops bring a thousandfold treasure and heroic strength to the people. Like mothers to a calf, the Soma drops embrace him, holding him tenderly. The purified, roaring Soma delights Indra and destroys all haters. The radiant ones, driving away the hostile, sit in the bed of the pressing stone. The pressed Soma drops, rich in sweetness, flow for Indra with the stream of truth. The inspired ones call upon Indra to drink Soma, as cows call to their calf. Soma, wise, abides in the seat, flowing with the wave of the river, resting upon the tawny one. Magnified in the unclouded expanse of heaven’s navel, Soma, the wise poet, shines forth. The Soma placed within the jars, inside the purifier, is embraced by Indu. Indu will send forth speech from the ocean’s surface, urging the honey-flowing vessel. The ever-praised tree, pressing the cow that yields abundantly within, is urged on with human aid. Purified Soma is called to grant wealth with a thousand powers, to become the people’s own possession. The wise poet Soma, pressed with the stream, moves toward the beloved of heaven, to the distant one. Soma’s powers rise up like the sound of the river’s wave, urging on the press-stone with song. At his stirring, three voices rise up, eager for the sacrifice as he ascends to the summit. With unclouded waves, the stones urge the dear tawny one—the honey-flowing, purified Soma—onward. The most exhilarating Soma is called to flow forth, with his purifier establishing the source of the sun. Adorned with cows and with nights, Soma is invited to enter Indra’s belly. With the filter, Soma pours around, bringing delight and descending, newly arrived. It is recounted that for Divodāsa, Soma shattered Śambara in this way; and then Turvaśa and Yadu, too, were aided by his might. Thus, the story of Soma’s purifying journey, his gifts, and the blessings bestowed upon gods and men, resounds through the sacred verses.
