O Soma, pressed by the hands of men with sacred stones and prepared for the divine drink, you are invited to journey forth into Indra’s belly. The Somas that are pressed in distant lands, those pressed here among us, and those brought forth in the land where chariots roll—all are called. Whether offered in the Arjika rites, within the heart of dwellings, or among the five peoples, each Soma is invoked. Let these divine Somas, wherever they are pressed, pour down rain from the heavens for us, showering heroic strength. To you, O calf, the mind ascends from the highest abode; and to you, Agni, I turn with my song, filled with longing. For you, Agni, are harmonious in many places, master of all the directions; in the heat of battle, we call upon you for aid. In the contests of men, we seek your help, Agni, desiring victory and the splendid gifts you bestow. Indra, mighty and wise, victorious in battle, bring us strength and heroism; grant us a warrior who conquers in war. You are our father, O lord, and our mother, O mighty one; thus, we seek your favor and grace. To you, O powerful and much-invoked one, I speak; victorious one, grant us heroic strength. Indra, if there are splendid gifts not yet with us, let those treasures you, O crusher, bestow be granted to us; bring forth both kinds of wealth. Whatever you consider worthy and heavenly, O Indra, bring that to us; let us know your blazing, unfailing gift. Your mind, O crusher, is vast and renowned, striving in all directions; with it you firmly attain the prize for victory. Now, the Maruts, with their troop, cleanse and adorn the youthful, tawny-born one. The sage, with song and poetry, surpasses the filter—Soma resounds, the poet shining forth. He whose mind is that of a seer, who acts as a seer, shines in heaven, guided by a thousand paths, following the ways of poets; in the third abode, the mighty Soma seeks to shine and reign in splendor. The falcon, the swift bird and carrier—Govinda, Drapsa—bearing weapons, together with the wave of waters, approaches the ocean, discerning the fourth abode. These Somas pour forth, fulfilling Indra’s cherished desire, manifesting his heroic power. Purifying, the Somas move onward, accompanied by the Ashvins and Vayu; may they grant us noble strength. O Soma, purify yourself for Indra’s favor, stir his heart, and settle in the seat of the gods. Seven inspired ones cleanse and pour you forth, O Soma; the sages follow you in the sacred rites. For the gods’ exhilaration, we send you forth, O Soma; with cows, we shall clothe you. Purifying in the vessels, the tawny, radiant Soma spreads out garments, enveloping himself in the gifts of cows. O generous one, flow for us and drive away all enemies; O Indu, unite us with friendship. With human vision, we shall partake of you, O Soma, as Indra, knower of light, has drunk you—a nourishment for our offspring. Pour down rain from the sky, strength upon the earth; grant us, O Soma, might in battles. Soma, purifying, flows in a thousand streams, exceedingly powerful, the portion of Vayu and Indra. Sing forth to the purifying, inspired Soma, the sage, for the divine feast, in joy. The Somas, purifying for the prize, with a thousand powers, are praised by those who sing at the divine feast. O Soma, flow for us with great riches, abundant nourishment, and shining strength. Swiftly you surge, like racing horses, unrestrained by barriers; you flow forth for wealth, your waves unimpeded, full of energy. May those Soma drops, O gods, bring us a thousandfold treasure and heroic strength. The Soma drops, like mothers to a calf, have embraced him, holding him in their hands. O purified, roaring Soma, delighting Indra, destroy all our haters. The purified, radiant ones, driving away the hostile, rest upon the pressing stone. The pressed Soma drops, rich in sweetness, flow for Indra in the stream of truth. The inspired ones have called Indra to drink Soma, as cows call to their calf. Soma, wise, abides in the seat, flowing with the river’s wave, resting upon the tawny one. Soma, the wise poet, is magnified in the clear expanse at heaven’s navel. That Soma which is placed within the jars, within the purifier, Indu has embraced. From the ocean’s surface, Indu will send forth speech, urging the honey-flowing vessel onward.
