May Indra, joined by the radiant Ādityas, firmly establish our sacrifice, our bodies, and our offspring, securing them with divine strength. Let Indra, together with the Ādityas and the mighty Maruts, bestow upon us healing remedies and protection. In gratitude and reverence, we raise a song to Indra—the destroyer of Vṛtra, the inspired god who delights in our hymns. The Maruts, shining brilliantly, join in singing this hymn; they praise youthful Indra, renowned among the gods. May we, living in sweetness, come near to you, Indra, and receive from you both wealth and insight. Like the wise Ushanas who proclaims wisdom, the great god reveals the origins of the gods. He is the pure, steadfast, and radiant boar who emerges with a mighty roar, striding forth in majesty. Swans, measured in threefold ways, journey forth with power, accompanied by a troop of strong bulls. Friends gather and speak together of the purifying, unconquerable, and roaring one. He follows the path of the widely-glorified, while the cows cannot measure the one who plays in mystery; the sharp-horned, golden being circles about, visible by day and purified by night. The resounding ones advance like swift chariots, coming forward as helpers; the Somas reach out for wealth. Urged onward, like chariots, they are established in the hands, bearing gifts as the skilled artisans do. The Somas, honored like kings with praises, are adorned with cows; the sacrifice itself is arranged by seven skilled arrangers. Around us, the resonant drops flow with vigor and song, streaming honey in their course, bringing delight and strength. Those who partake of this radiant Soma quicken the dawn’s wealth, and the strong ones spread abundance far and wide. The ancient doors of thought—the active, swift powers of the bull—swing open. Seven-born priests, united in purpose, seek the single, true path, desiring the one track that leads to the divine. As the navel lies within the navel, so have I placed this for the sight of the sun, drawing forth the offspring of the sage. To the beloved seat of heaven, hidden by the priests, the sun gazes with his all-seeing eye. The sacred drops flow along the path of truth, splendid in form; their precise arrangements are yoked to his will. The foremost stream of honey, vast and great, pervades the waters, and the offering shines praiseworthy among all sacrifices. The bull, foremost in speech, bellows in the forest where he is yoked; the true sacrifice dwells in the sacred homes. When the sage, purified by his powers, moves among the works, he seeks to attain the world of light. The purifying one sits among the people like a king, overcoming foes, urged on by the wise. The beloved golden one sits in the forests, surrounded by unfailing streams; the roaring one is praised by thought. He moves with the wind, with Indra and the Ashvins, filled with divine intoxication, ever striving according to his own law. To Mitra, Varuṇa, and Bhaga, the waves of honey flow, shaped by his arrangements and powers. May the two worlds grant us wealth, sweetness, strength to win, fame, and gathered treasures. To you, O Fire, source of delight and wisdom, we choose today as our protector—far-reaching and sheltering. To you, gentle, worthy, wise, and thoughtful one, we again choose today as our protector, far-reaching and sheltering. To you, giver of wealth, good counsel, and noble deeds, we choose today as our protector, far-reaching and sheltering. The gods generated Agni, the universal one, born from the head of heaven and the support of earth—the sage, the sovereign, the ever-near guest of the people, the vessel of offerings. All the immortal gods rejoice in you, O newborn Agni, as in a child; by your powers, they attained immortality when you shone forth between your two parents. The gods established the universal one as the navel of sacrifices, the seat of riches, the great and mighty charioteer of rites, the sign of sacrifice in all ceremonies. Let us sing to Mitra and Varuṇa with inspired song, honoring their vast, splendid, and mighty rule. These two sovereigns, Mitra and Varuṇa, whose origin is in ghee, are praised among the gods as divine among divinities. May your power, great on earth and in the heavens, be strong for us; your rule among the gods is vast and mighty. Indra, come to us with your shining light; these pressed drinks are purified for you by our hands, in small measures. Indra, inspired by our prayers, come accompanied by the wise to the pressed Soma and the hymns of the singers. Indra, come eagerly, O tawny one, to these hymns, and place our pressed Soma for our benefit. Let us praise him who, with his flame, embraces all things, and who with his tongue makes the dark things bright. He who, when kindled, calls for Indra’s favor, finds abundant waters for glory. May those swift, prize-bringing gifts carry us and our horses safely, O Indra and Agni, as we journey onward, guided and protected by your grace.
