In ancient times, the sacred Soma, offspring of the river, was cleansed and prepared with utmost care. Its tenfold essence was purified and cast forth, heralded by the rays of the sun. With Indra and Vāyu, the pressed Soma made its journey through the filter, merging with the sun’s golden beams. Flowing for our blessing, Soma was offered to Vāyu, Pūṣan, Mitra, and Varuṇa—sweet, lovely, and full of grace. May our gatherings with Indra be rich and abundant, nourishing us so that we may rejoice. Mighty Indra, yoked by your own power, come swiftly for the singers, as a chariot wheel rolls. Whenever, O hundred-powered one, you fulfill our desires, your powers turn like the wheel of a chariot, bringing delight. For the sake of granting good form, we offer you, O radiant one shining in the heavens, as one milks a cow that gives sweet milk. Come to our libations, O drinker of Soma, and partake of the sacred drink; the joy of the generous lies in giving, especially in the gift of cows. Let us know the limits of your favor; do not go beyond us, but come close. When you, Indra, fill both heaven and earth like the dawns, you stand as the great king, lord of peoples, born of the divine, blessed mother. With your guiding goad, O wise and generous one, we wish to follow your ancient path, as Yama did, for the divine mother has given birth to you. Remove from us the malice of mortals, humble those who attack us, make their position low and firm beneath us—all by the grace of the divine mother who gave you birth. The resounding Soma, pressed upon the mountain, flows through the filter; in its exhilaration, you pervade all. You are the inspired sage, sweet-born from pressing, all-pervading in joy. All the gods together have drunk from this draught; in its exhilaration, your presence fills everything. Soma, the bringer of wealth, leader of riches, lord of good dwellings, is pressed and offered. It is Soma whose juice Indra drinks, as do the Maruts and Bhaga, the bestower of boons; by whom we act with Mitra and Varuṇa, seeking Indra’s great help. Sing forth for your friend, for exhilaration, the purified one; delight him with offerings, as one would a child with praises. Like a calf with its mothers, the drop is impelled and pressed forth; the exhilarating draught, adorned by thoughts, is made ready for the gods. This pressed Soma is prepared for skill, strength, and delight; rich in sweetness, it is offered to the gods. The Soma juices, the drops, are purified for us, bestowers of the path; friendly, flawless, self-sustaining, and knowers of the light. These purified, wise Somas, bearing the head, are like splendid heroes, victorious and steadfast in ghee. Well-pressed by the stones, they flow, marked out upon the cow’s shining hide; may they bring us nourishment from all sides, as finders of wealth. By this purification, flow on, O Soma, into these riches; enter the lake, O drop, and run forth in the stream—your course unhindered by the wind, established by many wise, thoughtful men. And by this purification, flow on, O Soma, to the renowned place of fame; shake out for us sixty thousand treasures, like a ripe tree, for the contest. Great is Soma’s bull-like name in the pressing, whether in flesh, filter, or vessel. The hidden one lulls to sleep, moistens, drives away the unfriendly, and removes the senseless. Agni, you are our nearest and protector; may you be auspicious and a sheltering refuge. Agni is the treasure, famed for wealth; come hither, most radiant, and grant us abundant riches. To you, O most brilliant and shining one, we now seek favor for ourselves and our friends. May Indra and all the gods now sit here with us in these worlds. May Indra, together with the Ādityas, establish our sacrifice, our bodies, and our offspring. May Indra, with the Ādityas and Maruts, grant us remedies. Sing forth a song to Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, the inspired one, which he delights in. The Maruts, shining with light, sing the hymn; the youthful Indra, famed, is praised. May we, dwelling in sweetness, approach you, Indra, and obtain wealth and insight. Like Ushanas proclaiming wisdom, the god declares the origins of the gods; the great-vowed, pure-banded, shining one, the boar, comes forth, roaring, with his steps. The swans, with threefold measure, have gone forth, powerful ones, together with the troop of bulls; friends speak together of the purifying, unconquerable, roaring one. He joins the course of the wide-gloried one; the cows do not measure the one playing in vain. The sharp-horned, golden one makes a circuit, seen by day, cleansed by night. The resounding ones, like swift chariots, have advanced as helpers; the Somas have reached for wealth. Urged on like chariots, they have been established in the hands—bearers, like those of the artisans. Thus, the sacred Soma, the gods, and the radiant Agni are honored, their blessings invoked, and their powers praised, as the ancient rituals unfold in reverence and hope.
