May all the plants, possessing horses, possessing Soma, bestowing strength and vigor, come to us for complete protection.
The potent energy of the plants is kept, like cows in a pen; they grant wealth to those who seek it, and your spirit, O man.
Iṣkṛtir is your mother’s name, and you are the Iṣkṛtis; you are the sinews, the winged ones, when you drive away disease.
You have passed over all obstacles, as a thief leaps over a pen; the plants have shaken off whatever defilement was on the body.
When, desiring strength, I take these plants in my hand, the spirit of sickness departs, as the snare of life is loosened.
Wherever you plants spread, limb by limb, joint by joint, from there drive away disease, like a fierce middle-fingered one.
Depart together with disease, with the screeching owl; depart with the wind’s blast, perish with the departing darkness.
Let one of you follow another, and another follow yet another; all of you, being united, grant me this utterance.
Those that bear fruit, those that do not, those without flowers, and those with blossoms—born of Brihaspati—may they release us from affliction.
May they free me from curse, and also from Varuna’s wrath, and from Yama’s fetters, from every divine transgression.
The herbs that fall and those that do not, O plants, upon the earth and in the sky—whomever we feed with them, that person does not perish.
Those herbs, ruled by Soma, abundant and wise in hundreds—among them, you are the highest; grant favorable desire and joy to the heart.
Those herbs, ruled by Soma, established upon the earth, born of Brihaspati—give their strength to this one.
Let none of you be harmed by the digging, for whom I dig you up; for all bipeds and quadrupeds among us, let all be free from illness.
Those that hear this nearby, and those that have gone far away—all the herbs, gathering together, give their strength to this one.
The herbs speak together with Soma the king; for whom the Brahman does this, O king, we deliver him.
You are the highest among the herbs; your roots are the foundation. Let that foundation be ours, against whoever assails us.
O Brihaspati, come to me with divinity—whether you are Mitra, Varuna, or Pushan, or with the Adityas, Vasus, Maruts; let Parjanya bring blessing for the offspring.
May the swift, wise divine messenger come to me from the gods; turn toward me, favor me, I offer you radiant speech as a seat.
Place radiant speech in us, Brihaspati, free from disease and nourishing; by which we may obtain rain for the offspring, as the honeyed drop from heaven enters.
May honeyed drops enter us, Indra, grant abundant wealth; sit as the priest in due order, worship the gods, honor them with the offering.
The seer Arṣṭiṣeṇa sat as the priest, wise in divine favor; from the upper to the lower ocean, he sent forth the heavenly waters, rainy and abundant.
In this ocean and in the upper one, the waters, restrained by the gods, remained; they ran forth, released by Arṣṭiṣeṇa, sent by the divine messenger, into the nourishing ones.
When Devāpi, chosen as the priest for Shantanu, compassionately performed the rites, Brihaspati, renowned among the gods, granted him speech that brings rain.
You, Devāpi, shining, O Agni, Arṣṭiṣeṇa, human priest, honored by all the gods—move Parjanya to send forth rain.
You, whom the ancient sages approached with hymns, whom all invoke at the sacrifices, O much-invoked one—may you, Rohidasva, bring thousands of offerings to us; come to our ritual.
These ninety-nine offerings, Agni, and nine more, have been placed for you, and thousands besides; with these, grow strong in your form, O mighty one, and bring us abundant rain from heaven.
These ninety thousand offerings, Agni, send forth as a share to Indra, the powerful; knowing the proper path, place the divine portion in heaven among the gods.
Agni, drive away the hostilities, scatter the obstacles, ward off the evil and the demons; from this vast ocean of heaven, send us the abundance of waters and earth.
Who, being wise, will make our offering splendid, will strengthen the broad-backed, swift horse for increase? Who, at dawn, will fashion the thunderbolt, the slayer of Vritra, with the might of the donor?
