Truly your fathers, desiring safety, have yoked you in every age, as to a seat. Undecaying, golden-hued, with golden motion, they have made the heavens and earth resound with their roar.
Thus the stones speak at the release, as horses neigh with their harness. Pouring out the seed as if sowing grain, they press the Soma, never failing, ever eager.
At the pressing, at the sacrifice, they have uttered speech, like playful sons striking their mother. Release, O stones, the wise ones who have pressed out the juice; let them roll forth, eager in their work.
O wife, remain steadfast in mind; let us now compose our words together, even in this dread. These spells of ours have not been uttered in vain; they bring us happiness, even across the farther shore.
What shall I do with these words of yours? I will depart, like the first light of dawn. O Purūravas, go back again to your home; I am hard to reach, like the wind.
Like an arrow from the quiver, like the rush of a hundred cows, my speed is swift. In a man without strength, the resolve is scattered, as the streams disperse the waters, not even the wise can grasp the measure.
She, bearing wealth, goes to her father-in-law's house, if the dawn so wills, from the near home. I have reached the setting, where the path bends, bound at night by the Vaitasa cord.
Three times in the day the Vaitasa cords have bound me, and you, O unchanging one, have filled me with longing. O Purūravas, after your sign, this king, my hero, that was my body.
That well-joined line, full of favor, like a heart's vision, not knotted, swift-moving—those bright, ruddy ones have run forth for glory, like cows, like milch cows, bringing forth.
At my birth, the divine ladies sat together, and the waters, praised, increased. When the gods made you, O Purūravas, great for battle, for the slaying of foes.
When, with them, I abandoned desire among mortals, I, a mortal, served among mortals. Then, being intoxicated, they did not enjoy me; those who touched the chariot, those horses, vanished.
When a mortal, indifferent among the immortal women, does not share in their rituals with the earth-dwellers, then those forms shine forth, like horses at play, like restless colts, adorned in their own beauty.
Like lightning she fell, flashing without thunder, carrying away my cherished desires. The noble-born woman was born among the waters—O Urvashi, extend a long life for the man.
You were born thus, for the work of a herdsman; for that, O Pururavas, you placed your strength. I desired you, wise one, but you did not stay with me; you did not listen—what was it that you enjoyed?
When does a son, newly born, seek his father, causing tears to flow, knowing the truth? Who can separate a husband and wife who are of one mind, when Agni burns among the in-laws?
I declare it: she causes tears to flow, she makes the mother-in-law weep aloud for her well-being. Therefore, I send you away from me—go to another; do not touch me, foolish one.
Let the good god depart today, unrestrained, to the farthest distance, to the most distant place. There let him lie in the lap of destruction; there let the wolves, eager, devour him.
Pururavas, do not die, do not depart; let not the cruel, wicked wolves destroy you. Indeed, there is no friendship in women; the hearts of she-wolves are like this.
Whatever strange conduct I practiced among mortals, I dwelled for four autumns and nights. I ate a small portion of clarified butter once a day; with that alone, now satisfied, I depart.
Vasishtha, who moves in the midspace, seeks out Urvashi, the radiant one. The reward of good deeds stands near you; do not turn away—my heart is burning.
Thus the gods say this to you, O Aila: as you are, you are kin to death. Your offspring offer oblations to the gods; you, too, rejoice in heaven.
For you, O mighty one, I proclaim praise in the assembly; for you I seek the delight of the eager, the joy of the strong. Like clarified butter, which is beautifully poured by the Haris, may the hymns, adorned with your golden form, reach you.
For it is Hari whom those who invoke, pour forth, as in the heavenly abode. They fill him with Haris, like cows with milk—offer praise to Indra, the strong one, accompanied by the Haris.
His weapon is the tawny, iron thunderbolt; Hari, the unconstrained, Hari in his hands. Glorious, fair-cheeked, with the fury of Hari, in Indra the forms of the Haris have been fashioned.
Like a beacon in the sky is set the sign of the tawny one; the thunderbolt, like the tawny, shines forth. He struck the serpent, the iron-jawed one, with a thousand points—he bore the strength of Hari.
You, O Indra of tawny hair, have been praised as of old by former worshippers. You are tawny, all your might is tawny; your favor is tawny-born, most delightful.
Those two tawny steeds, yoked to the chariot, bear Indra, the thunderer, the joyous, the praiseworthy, to the pressing of Soma. For him, many tawny libations have been prepared; for Indra, the tawny ones have poured out the Soma.
For desire, the tawny ones have poured out; for the steadfast, the tawny steeds are harnessed, swift. He who is pleased with the tawny horses, with the steeds, attains his desire, full of tawny delight.
With tawny beard, tawny hair, iron-clad, he who grew strong in the protection of the tawny one—he who is pleased with the steeds, the mighty, the leader of hosts, overcomes all evils with the tawny ones.
Like two ladles, his tawny ones have been set apart; the swift ones, for the prize, have been split in two. When, for the sake of the offering, the tawny ones have been cleansed in the vessel, having drunk the exhilarating, delightful Soma.
