स्तोमेन हि दिवि देवासो अग्निमजीजनञ्छक्तिभी रोदसिप्राम् । तमू अकृण्वन्त्रेधा भुवे कं स ओषधीः पचति विश्वरूपाः
With praise, the gods in heaven created Agni, lord of the two realms, with their powers. They made him threefold for the world; he cooks the herbs of all forms.
यदेदेनमदधुर्यज्ञियासो दिवि देवाः सूर्यमादितेयम् । यदा चरिष्णू मिथुनावभूतामादित्प्रापश्यन्भुवनानि विश्वा
When the worthy ones placed him, the gods, in heaven as the solar Aditya, when the moving pair appeared, then all the worlds became visible.
विश्वस्मा अग्निं भुवनाय देवा वैश्वानरं केतुमह्नामकृण्वन् । आ यस्ततानोषसो विभातीरपो ऊर्णोति तमो अर्चिषा यन्
For all the worlds, the gods made Agni, the universal, the sign, with their might. He stretched out the dawns, the shining waters, and dispels darkness with his flame.
वैश्वानरं कवयो यज्ञियासोऽग्निं देवा अजनयन्नजुर्यम् । नक्षत्रं प्रत्नममिनच्चरिष्णु यक्षस्याध्यक्षं तविषं बृहन्तम्
The wise, worthy of sacrifice, brought forth Vaiśvānara Agni, the undying; the ancient star, moving, approached, the mighty, splendid overseer of the mysterious.
वैश्वानरं विश्वहा दीदिवांसं मन्त्रैरग्निं कविमच्छा वदामः । यो महिम्ना परिबभूवोर्वी उतावस्तादुत देवः परस्तात्
We speak to Vaiśvānara, the all-encompassing, shining Agni, the sage, with hymns; who, by his greatness, has encompassed the vastness, and is also the god beyond.
द्वे स्रुती अशृणवं पितॄणामहं देवानामुत मर्त्यानाम् । ताभ्यामिदं विश्वमेजत्समेति यदन्तरा पितरं मातरं च
I have heard two streams, of the ancestors and of the gods, and also of mortals; by these, all moves and comes together, whatever lies between father and mother.
द्वे समीची बिभृतश्चरन्तं शीर्षतो जातं मनसा विमृष्टम् । स प्रत्यङ्विश्वा भुवनानि तस्थावप्रयुच्छन्तरणिर्भ्राजमानः
Two harmonious paths bear the moving one, born from the head, shaped by mind; he stood facing all worlds, shining, the swift messenger, not sent by others.
यत्रा वदेते अवरः परश्च यज्ञन्योः कतरो नौ वि वेद । आ शेकुरित्सधमादं सखायो नक्षन्त यज्ञं क इदं वि वोचत्
Where the lower and the higher speak, which of us knows the sacrifice? The companions reached the common seat; they mark the ritual—who will declare this?
कत्यग्नयः कति सूर्यासः कत्युषासः कत्यु स्विदापः । नोपस्पिजं वः पितरो वदामि पृच्छामि वः कवयो विद्मने कम्
How many fires, how many suns, how many dawns, how many waters are there? I do not speak of your ancestors as hidden; I ask you, wise ones, for knowledge—whom?
यावन्मात्रमुषसो न प्रतीकं सुपर्ण्यो वसते मातरिश्वः । तावद्दधात्युप यज्ञमायन्ब्राह्मणो होतुरवरो निषीदन्
As long as the measure of dawns, not their likeness, the swift-winged Mātariśvan dwells; so long does the Brahman, the lower priest, establish the sacrificial seat.
इन्द्रं स्तवा नृतमं यस्य मह्ना विबबाधे रोचना वि ज्मो अन्तान् । आ यः पप्रौ चर्षणीधृद्वरोभिः प्र सिन्धुभ्यो रिरिचानो महित्वा
Let us praise Indra, best among men, whose greatness overcame the spaces and the boundaries of heaven; who filled the peoples with strength, and, radiating, extended from the rivers his majesty.
स सूर्यः पर्युरू वरांस्येन्द्रो ववृत्याद्रथ्येव चक्रा । अतिष्ठन्तमपस्यं न सर्गं कृष्णा तमांसि त्विष्या जघान
He, like the sun, surrounds the broad realms; Indra, turning, like a charioteer, made the wheels; he struck the darkness, the black gloom, with his brilliance, as one who overcomes obstacles.
समानमस्मा अनपावृदर्च क्ष्मया दिवो असमं ब्रह्म नव्यम् । वि यः पृष्ठेव जनिमान्यर्य इन्द्रश्चिकाय न सखायमीषे
Let us sing together, unhindered, with new hymns, on earth and in heaven; he, like a craftsman, shaped the generations, Indra sought friendship, not for himself alone.
इन्द्राय गिरो अनिशितसर्गा अपः प्रेरयं सगरस्य बुध्नात् । यो अक्षेणेव चक्रिया शचीभिर्विष्वक्तस्तम्भ पृथिवीमुत द्याम्
For Indra, the songs, unrestrained, I send forth, from the depths of the ocean; who, with his powers, like an axle, established the earth and the sky everywhere.
आपान्तमन्युस्तृपलप्रभर्मा धुनिः शिमीवाञ्छरुमाँ ऋजीषी । सोमो विश्वान्यतसा वनानि नार्वागिन्द्रं प्रतिमानानि देभुः
His wrath, reaching the end, is fierce and swift, like a roaring fire, sharp and pure; Soma has traversed all forests, and the rivers have measured Indra's greatness.
न यस्य द्यावापृथिवी न धन्व नान्तरिक्षं नाद्रयः सोमो अक्षाः । यदस्य मन्युरधिनीयमानः शृणाति वीळु रुजति स्थिराणि
There is no sky, no earth, no desert, no midspace, no mountains, no rivers that Soma does not reach; when his wrath is aroused, he hears, he breaks what is firm.
जघान वृत्रं स्वधितिर्वनेव रुरोज पुरो अरदन्न सिन्धून् । बिभेद गिरिं नवमिन्न कुम्भमा गा इन्द्रो अकृणुत स्वयुग्भिः
He slew Vṛtra, like a force in the forest, he broke the fortresses, he opened the rivers; he split the mountain, released the ninth vessel, Indra made the cows with his own teams.
त्वं ह त्यदृणया इन्द्र धीरोऽसिर्न पर्व वृजिना शृणासि । प्र ये मित्रस्य वरुणस्य धाम युजं न जना मिनन्ति मित्रम्
You, Indra, resolute, with your might, break the obstacles like an axe splits the joints; those who violate the law of Mitra and Varuṇa, the people, do not harm the friend.
प्र ये मित्रं प्रार्यमणं दुरेवाः प्र संगिरः प्र वरुणं मिनन्ति । न्यमित्रेषु वधमिन्द्र तुम्रं वृषन्वृषाणमरुषं शिशीहि
Those who, hostile, injure Mitra, Aryaman, the singers, and Varuṇa; among the unfriendly, Indra, mighty, punish the strong, the wild, with your power.
इन्द्रो दिव इन्द्र ईशे पृथिव्या इन्द्रो अपामिन्द्र इत्पर्वतानाम् । इन्द्रो वृधामिन्द्र इन्मेधिराणामिन्द्रः क्षेमे योगे हव्य इन्द्रः
Indra is lord of heaven, Indra is lord of earth, Indra is lord of waters, Indra is lord of mountains; Indra is lord of the strong, Indra is lord of the wise, Indra is lord in home, in gathering, in offering.
प्राक्तुभ्य इन्द्रः प्र वृधो अहभ्यः प्रान्तरिक्षात्प्र समुद्रस्य धासेः । प्र वातस्य प्रथसः प्र ज्मो अन्तात्प्र सिन्धुभ्यो रिरिचे प्र क्षितिभ्यः
Indra has extended from the east, from the mighty ones, from the days, from the midspace, from the ocean's depths; from the spreading wind, from the boundaries of heaven, from the rivers, from the lands, he has radiated.
प्र शोशुचत्या उषसो न केतुरसिन्वा ते वर्ततामिन्द्र हेतिः । अश्मेव विध्य दिव आ सृजानस्तपिष्ठेन हेषसा द्रोघमित्रान्
Like the bright herald of dawn, your weapon, O Indra, shines forth; let it be ever victorious for you. Strike down the treacherous foes as one splits a stone, hurling your blazing missile from the sky.
अन्वह मासा अन्विद्वनान्यन्वोषधीरनु पर्वतासः । अन्विन्द्रं रोदसी वावशाने अन्वापो अजिहत जायमानम्
The months follow one another in order, the plants follow, and the mountains as well. The two worlds, earth and sky, attend upon Indra in his strength, and the waters support the newborn one.
कर्हि स्वित्सा त इन्द्र चेत्यासदघस्य यद्भिनदो रक्ष एषत् । मित्रक्रुवो यच्छसने न गावः पृथिव्या आपृगमुया शयन्ते
When, O Indra, will that moment come when this destroyer of evil will be overthrown? When, like cows at pasture, will the enemies who act as false friends lie scattered upon the earth?
शत्रूयन्तो अभि ये नस्ततस्रे महि व्राधन्त ओगणास इन्द्र । अन्धेनामित्रास्तमसा सचन्तां सुज्योतिषो अक्तवस्ताँ अभि ष्युः
Those who are hostile to us, who gather in great numbers, let them, O Indra, be utterly defeated. Let the unfaithful, joined with darkness and blindness, be surrounded by those who possess true light.
पुरूणि हि त्वा सवना जनानां ब्रह्माणि मन्दन्गृणतामृषीणाम् । इमामाघोषन्नवसा सहूतिं तिरो विश्वाँ अर्चतो याह्यर्वाङ्
For you, many offerings of the people, the hymns of the praising sages, bring delight. They call out to you with eager invocation; come near, passing over all others who sing your praise.
एवा ते वयमिन्द्र भुञ्जतीनां विद्याम सुमतीनां नवानाम् । विद्याम वस्तोरवसा गृणन्तो विश्वामित्रा उत त इन्द्र नूनम्
Thus may we, O Indra, among those who enjoy your favor, know the new blessings of your goodwill. May we, singing your praise, know the wealth of your help; may all friends, O Indra, know you now.
शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ । शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु घ्नन्तं वृत्राणि संजितं धनानाम्
Let us call upon generous Indra, the best hero in this contest for prize and strength. May he, fierce and attentive to our call in battles, hear us, strike down the foes, and win the wealth.
सहस्रशीर्षा पुरुषः सहस्राक्षः सहस्रपात् । स भूमिं विश्वतो वृत्वात्यतिष्ठद्दशाङ्गुलम्
The Cosmic Person has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet. Encompassing the earth on every side, he extended beyond it by ten fingers' breadth.
पुरुष एवेदं सर्वं यद्भूतं यच्च भव्यम् । उतामृतत्वस्येशानो यदन्नेनातिरोहति
This entire universe is indeed that Person—what was and what will be. He is the lord of immortality, and by food he grows beyond.
