किं सुबाहो स्वङ्गुरे पृथुष्टो पृथुजाघने । किं शूरपत्नि नस्त्वमभ्यमीषि वृषाकपिं विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Why, O broad-armed, strong-fingered, thick-thighed woman, wife of a hero, do you approach us, Vṛṣākapi? Indra is superior to all.
अवीरामिव मामयं शरारुरभि मन्यते । उताहमस्मि वीरिणीन्द्रपत्नी मरुत्सखा विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
He thinks me weak, as if I were without strength, but I am powerful, Indra's wife, companion of the Maruts. Indra is superior to all.
संहोत्रं स्म पुरा नारी समनं वाव गच्छति । वेधा ऋतस्य वीरिणीन्द्रपत्नी महीयते विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
In ancient times, the woman went together with the sacrificial offering. The creator, by truth, honors the powerful wife of Indra. Indra is superior to all.
इन्द्राणीमासु नारिषु सुभगामहमश्रवम् । नह्यस्या अपरं चन जरसा मरते पतिर्विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Among these women, I have heard Indrāṇī is fortunate. Her husband does not perish from old age. Indra is superior to all.
नाहमिन्द्राणि रारण सख्युर्वृषाकपेरृते । यस्येदमप्यं हविः प्रियं देवेषु गच्छति विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
I am not Indrāṇī, nor the companion of Vṛṣākapi, for whose sake this dear offering goes to the gods. Indra is superior to all.
वृषाकपायि रेवति सुपुत्र आदु सुस्नुषे । घसत्त इन्द्र उक्षणः प्रियं काचित्करं हविर्विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Vṛṣākapi, Revati, with good sons and good daughters, Indra has eaten, the bull, some dear offering prepared for him. Indra is superior to all.
उक्ष्णो हि मे पञ्चदश साकं पचन्ति विंशतिम् । उताहमद्मि पीव इदुभा कुक्षी पृणन्ति मे विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Fifteen cooks prepare together twenty portions for me from the bull. I have eaten, my belly is full, both sides are satisfied. Indra is superior to all.
वृषभो न तिग्मशृङ्गोऽन्तर्यूथेषु रोरुवत् । मन्थस्त इन्द्र शं हृदे यं ते सुनोति भावयुर्विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Like a bull with sharp horns roaring among the herds, Indra, the churner, brings joy to the heart, for whom the wise prepare the offering. Indra is superior to all.
न सेशे यस्य रम्बतेऽन्तरा सक्थ्या कपृत् । सेदीशे यस्य रोमशं निषेदुषो विजृम्भते विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
He does not lie down, whose thigh trembles within; he lies down, whose hairy part expands as he sits. Indra is superior to all.
न सेशे यस्य रोमशं निषेदुषो विजृम्भते । सेदीशे यस्य रम्बतेऽन्तरा सक्थ्या कपृद्विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
He does not lie down, whose hairy part expands as he sits; he lies down, whose thigh trembles within. Indra is superior to all.
अयमिन्द्र वृषाकपिः परस्वन्तं हतं विदत् । असिं सूनां नवं चरुमादेधस्यान आचितं विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
This Indra, Vṛṣākapi, has found the slain one with wealth. He takes the new blade, the cooked offering, the heap of fuel. Indra is superior to all.
अयमेमि विचाकशद्विचिन्वन्दासमार्यम् । पिबामि पाकसुत्वनोऽभि धीरमचाकशं विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
I come here, searching, investigating the Dasa and Arya. I drink the cooked Soma, approaching the wise, the thoughtful one. Indra is superior to all.
धन्व च यत्कृन्तत्रं च कति स्वित्ता वि योजना । नेदीयसो वृषाकपेऽस्तमेहि गृहाँ उप विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
How many stretches, how many yojanas are there in the desert and the cutting place? Come home, Vṛṣākapi, to the nearer place. Indra is superior to all.
पुनरेहि वृषाकपे सुविता कल्पयावहै । य एष स्वप्ननंशनोऽस्तमेषि पथा पुनर्विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Return, Vṛṣākapi, let us prepare good fortune. He who shares dreams, you return home by the path. Indra is superior to all.
यदुदञ्चो वृषाकपे गृहमिन्द्राजगन्तन । क्व स्य पुल्वघो मृगः कमगञ्जनयोपनो विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
When you, Vṛṣākapi, came to Indra's house, where is that soft-footed deer, what did he eat, what did he lick? Indra is superior to all.
पर्शुर्ह नाम मानवी साकं ससूव विंशतिम् । भद्रं भल त्यस्या अभूद्यस्या उदरमामयद्विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Parśu, the woman, gave birth to twenty together. Her fortune was good, her belly was cured. Indra is superior to all.
रक्षोहणं वाजिनमा जिघर्मि मित्रं प्रथिष्ठमुप यामि शर्म । शिशानो अग्निः क्रतुभिः समिद्धः स नो दिवा स रिषः पातु नक्तम्
I strike the demon-slayer, the swift one; I approach the established friend for protection. Agni, shining, kindled by intentions, may he guard us by day and night from harm.
अयोदंष्ट्रो अर्चिषा यातुधानानुप स्पृश जातवेदः समिद्धः । आ जिह्वया मूरदेवान्रभस्व क्रव्यादो वृक्त्व्यपि धत्स्वासन्
O Jātavedas, blazing and kindled, with your fiery jaws strike the sorcerers; with your tongue seize the rootless demons; as the devourer of flesh, place them upon the altar.
उभोभयाविन्नुप धेहि दंष्ट्रा हिंस्रः शिशानोऽवरं परं च । उतान्तरिक्षे परि याहि राजञ्जम्भैः सं धेह्यभि यातुधानान्
With both your jaws, fierce and sharp, seize the lower and the upper, O devourer; and, O king, move through the midspace, surround the sorcerers with your jaws.
यज्ञैरिषूः संनममानो अग्ने वाचा शल्याँ अशनिभिर्दिहानः । ताभिर्विध्य हृदये यातुधानान्प्रतीचो बाहून्प्रति भङ्ध्येषाम्
O Agni, bending your arrows with sacrifices, wounding with words and piercing with thunderbolts, strike the sorcerers in their hearts with these, and bind their arms behind them.
अग्ने त्वचं यातुधानस्य भिन्धि हिंस्राशनिर्हरसा हन्त्वेनम् । प्र पर्वाणि जातवेदः शृणीहि क्रव्यात्क्रविष्णुर्वि चिनोतु वृक्णम्
Agni, rend the skin of the sorcerer; let your fierce flame destroy him with force. O Jātavedas, cut through his joints; let the devourer of flesh separate the limbs.
यत्रेदानीं पश्यसि जातवेदस्तिष्ठन्तमग्न उत वा चरन्तम् । यद्वान्तरिक्षे पथिभिः पतन्तं तमस्ता विध्य शर्वा शिशानः
Wherever now, O Jātavedas, you see him standing or moving, O Agni, or flying through the midspace by paths—there, O sharp-toothed one, strike him down.
उतालब्धं स्पृणुहि जातवेद आलेभानादृष्टिभिर्यातुधानात् । अग्ने पूर्वो नि जहि शोशुचान आमादः क्ष्विङ्कास्तमदन्त्वेनीः
Even if found, O Jātavedas, cleanse away the sorcerer's stains with your sight; O Agni, burn down the foremost with your flame, and let the devouring ones eat the remnants.
इह प्र ब्रूहि यतमः सो अग्ने यो यातुधानो य इदं कृणोति । तमा रभस्व समिधा यविष्ठ नृचक्षसश्चक्षुषे रन्धयैनम्
Here declare, O Agni, who is the sorcerer, who does this; seize him with your blazing flame, O youngest, and block his sight from the vision of men.
तीक्ष्णेनाग्ने चक्षुषा रक्ष यज्ञं प्राञ्चं वसुभ्यः प्र णय प्रचेतः । हिंस्रं रक्षांस्यभि शोशुचानं मा त्वा दभन्यातुधाना नृचक्षः
With your sharp gaze, O Agni, protect the sacrifice; lead it forward for the wise and the good; shining, burn up the fierce demons; let not the sorcerers harm you, O far-seeing one.
नृचक्षा रक्षः परि पश्य विक्षु तस्य त्रीणि प्रति शृणीह्यग्रा । तस्याग्ने पृष्टीर्हरसा शृणीहि त्रेधा मूलं यातुधानस्य वृश्च
O far-seeing one, behold the demon all around among the tribes; cut off his three joints at the front; O Agni, with force cut his backs, and sever the root of the sorcerer in three.
त्रिर्यातुधानः प्रसितिं त एत्वृतं यो अग्ने अनृतेन हन्ति । तमर्चिषा स्फूर्जयञ्जातवेदः समक्षमेनं गृणते नि वृङ्धि
Thrice let the sorcerer come to his end, he who, O Agni, slays the true with falsehood; O Jātavedas, burn him up with your flame, and cast him down before those who praise you.
तदग्ने चक्षुः प्रति धेहि रेभे शफारुजं येन पश्यसि यातुधानम् । अथर्ववज्ज्योतिषा दैव्येन सत्यं धूर्वन्तमचितं न्योष
Place that vision, O Agni, with which you see the sorcerer, breaking his hooves and horns; with Atharvan's light, with divine truth, cast down the one who is unsteady and unknowing.
यदग्ने अद्य मिथुना शपातो यद्वाचस्तृष्टं जनयन्त रेभाः । मन्योर्मनसः शरव्या जायते या तया विध्य हृदये यातुधानान्
Whatever curse, O Agni, is uttered today by a pair, or whatever words the sorcerers have spoken, whatever arrow is born of anger or mind—by that, strike the sorcerers in the heart.
परा शृणीहि तपसा यातुधानान्पराग्ने रक्षो हरसा शृणीहि । परार्चिषा मूरदेवाञ्छृणीहि परासुतृपो अभि शोशुचानः
Drive away the sorcerers with your heat; drive away the demon, O Agni, with your force; drive away the rootless ones with your flame; shining, drive away those who are insatiable.
