यत्त्वा देव प्रपिबन्ति तत आ प्यायसे पुनः । वायुः सोमस्य रक्षिता समानां मास आकृतिः
When the gods drink you, O Soma, from that you are replenished again. Vāyu is the guardian of Soma; the months are your form alike.
रैभ्यासीदनुदेयी नाराशंसी न्योचनी । सूर्याया भद्रमिद्वासो गाथयैति परिष्कृतम्
Raibhyā was the bridesmaid, Nārāśaṃsī the attendant. The auspicious garment of Sūryā comes adorned with song.
चित्तिरा उपबर्हणं चक्षुरा अभ्यञ्जनम् । द्यौर्भूमिः कोश आसीद्यदयात्सूर्या पतिम्
Cittirā was the seat, Cakṣurā the ointment. Heaven and earth were the vessel, when Sūryā was given to her husband.
स्तोमा आसन्प्रतिधयः कुरीरं छन्द ओपशः । सूर्याया अश्विना वराग्निरासीत्पुरोगवः
The hymns were the responses, the Kurīra the covering, the sacred verses the bands. For Sūryā, the Aśvins were the groomsmen, Agni was the leader.
सोमो वधूयुरभवदश्विनास्तामुभा वरा । सूर्यां यत्पत्ये शंसन्तीं मनसा सविताददात्
Soma was the suitor, the Aśvins were both the groomsmen. When Sūryā was to be given to her husband, Savitṛ bestowed her with blessings.
मनो अस्या अन आसीद्द्यौरासीदुत च्छदिः । शुक्रावनड्वाहावास्तां यदयात्सूर्या गृहम्
Her mind was the axle, the sky was the canopy. The shining oxen were the draught animals, when Sūryā entered her home.
ऋक्सामाभ्यामभिहितौ गावौ ते सामनावितः । श्रोत्रं ते चक्रे आस्तां दिवि पन्थाश्चराचारः
With the Ṛc and Sāman hymns, the two cows were yoked, accompanied by song. Your hearing was fashioned; in the sky, the path was set for movement.
शुची ते चक्रे यात्या व्यानो अक्ष आहतः । अनो मनस्मयं सूर्यारोहत्प्रयती पतिम्
The shining wheel was made for you, the breath set in motion the axle. Sūryā, with a mind-made chariot, ascended, striving toward her husband.
सूर्याया वहतुः प्रागात्सविता यमवासृजत् । अघासु हन्यन्ते गावोऽर्जुन्योः पर्युह्यते
For Sūryā's chariot, Savitṛ sent forth the yoke. The cows are struck among the unyoked, between the white ones they are enclosed.
यदश्विना पृच्छमानावयातं त्रिचक्रेण वहतुं सूर्यायाः । विश्वे देवा अनु तद्वामजानन्पुत्रः पितराववृणीत पूषा
When the Aśvins, inquiring, came with the three-wheeled chariot of Sūryā, all the gods learned of it; Pūṣan, the son, chose his parents.
यदयातं शुभस्पती वरेयं सूर्यामुप । क्वैकं चक्रं वामासीत्क्व देष्ट्राय तस्थथुः
When you came, O lords of beauty, to seek Sūryā as bride, where was your one wheel, where did you place your yoke?
द्वे ते चक्रे सूर्ये ब्रह्माण ऋतुथा विदुः । अथैकं चक्रं यद्गुहा तदद्धातय इद्विदुः
Two wheels, O priests, they know for Sūryā, according to the seasons. But the one wheel that is hidden, only the wise know that.
सूर्यायै देवेभ्यो मित्राय वरुणाय च । ये भूतस्य प्रचेतस इदं तेभ्योऽकरं नमः
To Sūryā, to the gods, to Mitra and Varuṇa, and to those who are the wise of existence—I offer homage to them.
पूर्वापरं चरतो माययैतौ शिशू क्रीळन्तौ परि यातो अध्वरम् । विश्वान्यन्यो भुवनाभिचष्ट ऋतूँरन्यो विदधज्जायते पुनः
These two, moving forward and backward by their illusion, the children playing, have gone around the sacrifice; one observes all the worlds, the other arranges the seasons, and is born again.
नवोनवो भवति जायमानोऽह्नां केतुरुषसामेत्यग्रम् । भागं देवेभ्यो वि दधात्यायन्प्र चन्द्रमास्तिरते दीर्घमायुः
Ever new, ever renewed, he is born, the sign of days, he comes first among the dawns; he apportions a share to the gods, and the Moon, advancing, attains long life.
सुकिंशुकं शल्मलिं विश्वरूपं हिरण्यवर्णं सुवृतं सुचक्रम् । आ रोह सूर्ये अमृतस्य लोकं स्योनं पत्ये वहतुं कृणुष्व
Climb the lovely silk-cotton tree, of manifold forms, golden-hued, well-covered, with good wheels; ascend, O Sūryā, to the world of immortality, make yourself agreeable for bearing to your husband.
उदीर्ष्वातः पतिवती ह्येषा विश्वावसुं नमसा गीर्भिरीळे । अन्यामिच्छ पितृषदं व्यक्तां स ते भागो जनुषा तस्य विद्धि
Rise up, go forth! For she is a wife; with reverence I praise Viśvāvasu with words; seek another, the clearly marked seat among the ancestors; know that this is your share by birth.
उदीर्ष्वातो विश्वावसो नमसेळा महे त्वा । अन्यामिच्छ प्रफर्व्यं सं जायां पत्या सृज
Rise up, go forth, O Viśvāvasu, with reverence I praise you; seek another, the wide expanse; let the wife unite with her husband.
अनृक्षरा ऋजवः सन्तु पन्था येभिः सखायो यन्ति नो वरेयम् । समर्यमा सं भगो नो निनीयात्सं जास्पत्यं सुयममस्तु देवाः
Let the paths be straight and free from falsehood, by which our friends go to choose a spouse; may Aryaman, may Bhaga, bring us together; may the gods grant us harmonious householdership.
प्र त्वा मुञ्चामि वरुणस्य पाशाद्येन त्वाबध्नात्सविता सुशेवः । ऋतस्य योनौ सुकृतस्य लोकेऽरिष्टां त्वा सह पत्या दधामि
I release you from the noose of Varuṇa, with which Savitṛ, the gracious, bound you; in the seat of truth, in the world of good deeds, unharmed, I place you together with your husband.
प्रेतो मुञ्चामि नामुतः सुबद्धाममुतस्करम् । यथेयमिन्द्र मीढ्वः सुपुत्रा सुभगासति
I release you hence, not from there, well-bound, not to be stolen away; so that, O Indra, O gracious one, she may be blessed with good sons and good fortune.
पूषा त्वेतो नयतु हस्तगृह्याश्विना त्वा प्र वहतां रथेन । गृहान्गच्छ गृहपत्नी यथासो वशिनी त्वं विदथमा वदासि
May Pūṣan lead you, holding your hand; may the Aśvins carry you forth in their chariot; enter the house as the mistress of the household, and, being in command, speak at the assembly.
इह प्रियं प्रजया ते समृध्यतामस्मिन्गृहे गार्हपत्याय जागृहि । एना पत्या तन्वं सं सृजस्वाधा जिव्री विदथमा वदाथः
Here, may you prosper with offspring, in this house, keep watch over the household fire; unite your body with your husband, and, being wise, speak at the assembly.
नीललोहितं भवति कृत्यासक्तिर्व्यज्यते । एधन्ते अस्या ज्ञातयः पतिर्बन्धेषु बध्यते
Her attachment to harmful acts becomes dark red and is revealed; her relatives increase, but her husband is bound in fetters.
परा देहि शामुल्यं ब्रह्मभ्यो वि भजा वसु । कृत्यैषा पद्वती भूत्व्या जाया विशते पतिम्
Give away the root of discord to the Brahmins, distribute the wealth; this woman, having become free from harmful acts, enters her husband.
अश्रीरा तनूर्भवति रुशती पापयामुया । पतिर्यद्वध्वो वाससा स्वमङ्गमभिधित्सते
Her body becomes unprosperous, pale, and sinful, when the husband desires another woman with his wife's garment.
ये वध्वश्चन्द्रं वहतुं यक्ष्मा यन्ति जनादनु । पुनस्तान्यज्ञिया देवा नयन्तु यत आगताः
Those diseases that follow the bride, carrying the moon, from the people—may the worshipful gods lead them back to where they came from.
मा विदन्परिपन्थिनो य आसीदन्ति दम्पती । सुगेभिर्दुर्गमतीतामप द्रान्त्वरातयः
Let not the waylayers, who sit around the couple, know; may the enemies flee far away, and may they cross difficult places with good paths.
सुमङ्गलीरियं वधूरिमां समेत पश्यत । सौभाग्यमस्यै दत्त्वायाथास्तं वि परेतन
Auspicious is this bride; come together and look upon her; having given her good fortune, depart to your homes.
तृष्टमेतत्कटुकमेतदपाष्ठवद्विषवन्नैतदत्तवे । सूर्यां यो ब्रह्मा विद्यात्स इद्वाधूयमर्हति
This is dry, this is bitter, this is like poison, not to be eaten; he who knows the Sūryā hymn, that Brahmin is worthy of the bride.
