विषूचो अश्वान्युयुजे वनेजा ऋजीतिभी रशनाभिर्गृभीतान् । चक्षदे मित्रो वसुभिः सुजातः समानृधे पर्वभिर्वावृधानः
He yoked the horses, eager for the forest, with straight paths, bound with reins. Mitra, well-born, shines with riches; growing strong at the joints, he advances.
अग्निः सप्तिं वाजम्भरं ददात्यग्निर्वीरं श्रुत्यं कर्मनिष्ठाम् । अग्नी रोदसी वि चरत्समञ्जन्नग्निर्नारीं वीरकुक्षिं पुरंधिम्
Agni gives the team that brings strength and prizes; Agni gives the hero, famed for his deeds. Agni moves between heaven and earth, well-ordered; Agni is the woman, the fruitful womb, the bountiful one.
अग्नेरप्नसः समिदस्तु भद्राग्निर्मही रोदसी आ विवेश । अग्निरेकं चोदयत्समत्स्वग्निर्वृत्राणि दयते पुरूणि
May the kindling of Agni's body be auspicious; Agni has entered the great heavens and earth. Agni alone stirs up the battles; Agni destroys many foes.
अग्निर्ह त्यं जरतः कर्णमावाग्निरद्भ्यो निरदहज्जरूथम् । अग्निरत्रिं घर्म उरुष्यदन्तरग्निर्नृमेधं प्रजयासृजत्सम्
Agni, indeed, brought the old man with his ear; Agni drove forth the chariot from the waters. Agni protected Atri from the heat within; Agni sent forth Nṛmedha together with offspring.
अग्निर्दाद्द्रविणं वीरपेशा अग्निरृषिं यः सहस्रा सनोति । अग्निर्दिवि हव्यमा ततानाग्नेर्धामानि विभृता पुरुत्रा
Agni gives wealth, splendid with heroes; Agni makes the seer who bestows thousands. Agni has stretched the oblation in heaven; Agni's abodes are widely distributed in many places.
अग्निमुक्थैरृषयो वि ह्वयन्तेऽग्निं नरो यामनि बाधितासः । अग्निं वयो अन्तरिक्षे पतन्तोऽग्निः सहस्रा परि याति गोनाम्
With hymns, the seers call upon Agni; men, pressed by the journey, call upon Agni. Birds flying in the mid-air call upon Agni; Agni goes around thousands of cows.
अग्निं विश ईळते मानुषीर्या अग्निं मनुषो नहुषो वि जाताः । अग्निर्गान्धर्वीं पथ्यामृतस्याग्नेर्गव्यूतिर्घृत आ निषत्ता
The human clans worship Agni; those of Manu, of Nahusha, are born for Agni. Agni has the Gandharva path of immortality; Agni's cow-pen is set in ghee.
अग्नये ब्रह्म ऋभवस्ततक्षुरग्निं महामवोचामा सुवृक्तिम् । अग्ने प्राव जरितारं यविष्ठाग्ने महि द्रविणमा यजस्व
For Agni, the Ribhus have fashioned the hymn; to Agni, the great, we have spoken a well-praised song. O youngest Agni, lead the singer forward; Agni, grant us great wealth as you sacrifice.
य इमा विश्वा भुवनानि जुह्वदृषिर्होता न्यसीदत्पिता नः । स आशिषा द्रविणमिच्छमानः प्रथमच्छदवराँ आ विवेश
He who, sacrificing, sat as the seer and priest over all these worlds, our father—he, desiring wealth with his blessing, entered first and last.
किं स्विदासीदधिष्ठानमारम्भणं कतमत्स्वित्कथासीत् । यतो भूमिं जनयन्विश्वकर्मा वि द्यामौर्णोन्महिना विश्वचक्षाः
What was the foundation? What was the support? Which was the word? What was it? From where, creating the earth, did the All-Maker, all-seeing, stretch out the sky with his greatness?
विश्वतश्चक्षुरुत विश्वतोमुखो विश्वतोबाहुरुत विश्वतस्पात् । सं बाहुभ्यां धमति सं पतत्रैर्द्यावाभूमी जनयन्देव एकः
With eyes on all sides, with faces on all sides, with arms on all sides, with feet on all sides—he blows with both arms, with both wings; the one god, creating heaven and earth.
किं स्विद्वनं क उ स वृक्ष आस यतो द्यावापृथिवी निष्टतक्षुः । मनीषिणो मनसा पृच्छतेदु तद्यदध्यतिष्ठद्भुवनानि धारयन्
What was that forest? Who was that tree from which they fashioned heaven and earth? Wise men seek with their mind to know that, upon which all worlds rest.
या ते धामानि परमाणि यावमा या मध्यमा विश्वकर्मन्नुतेमा । शिक्षा सखिभ्यो हविषि स्वधावः स्वयं यजस्व तन्वं वृधानः
Those abodes of yours, O All-Maker, which are highest, which are lowest, and which are in the middle—teach them to your companions at the offering, self-sustaining one; worship yourself, growing in your form.
विश्वकर्मन्हविषा वावृधानः स्वयं यजस्व पृथिवीमुत द्याम् । मुह्यन्त्वन्ये अभितो जनास इहास्माकं मघवा सूरिरस्तु
O All-Maker, growing with the offering, worship yourself, both earth and heaven. Let other people around us be confused; here, may the generous one, the wise, be ours.
वाचस्पतिं विश्वकर्माणमूतये मनोजुवं वाजे अद्या हुवेम । स नो विश्वानि हवनानि जोषद्विश्वशम्भूरवसे साधुकर्मा
Let us call today for help upon the Lord of Speech, the All-Maker, swift in mind, in the contest. May he accept all our offerings; all-blessing, of good deeds, for our aid.
चक्षुषः पिता मनसा हि धीरो घृतमेने अजनन्नम्नमाने । यदेदन्ता अददृहन्त पूर्व आदिद्द्यावापृथिवी अप्रथेताम्
The wise one, father of vision, generated with his mind the flowing butter, bowing down. When the two ends were made firm at first, then heaven and earth expanded.
विश्वकर्मा विमना आद्विहाया धाता विधाता परमोत संदृक् । तेषामिष्टानि समिषा मदन्ति यत्रा सप्तऋषीन्पर एकमाहुः
The All-Maker, with his mind, left behind the lower, the creator, the arranger, the highest, the seer. Their desires, together with offerings, rejoice where they say the seven seers are, and the one above.
यो नः पिता जनिता यो विधाता धामानि वेद भुवनानि विश्वा । यो देवानां नामधा एक एव तं सम्प्रश्नं भुवना यन्त्यन्या
He who is our father, our begetter, our ordainer, who knows the abodes and all the worlds; who alone is the namer of the gods—toward that One, all other worlds turn with inquiry.
त आयजन्त द्रविणं समस्मा ऋषयः पूर्वे जरितारो न भूना । असूर्ते सूर्ते रजसि निषत्ते ये भूतानि समकृण्वन्निमानि
To him, the ancient seers, the singers of old, offered wealth, as if to a generous giver; in the unillumined and illumined expanse, they established these beings together.
परो दिवा पर एना पृथिव्या परो देवेभिरसुरैर्यदस्ति । कं स्विद्गर्भं प्रथमं दध्र आपो यत्र देवाः समपश्यन्त विश्वे
He is beyond the sky, beyond this earth, beyond what exists among the gods and the mighty; what embryo did the waters first hold, where all the gods beheld each other together?
तमिद्गर्भं प्रथमं दध्र आपो यत्र देवाः समगच्छन्त विश्वे । अजस्य नाभावध्येकमर्पितं यस्मिन्विश्वानि भुवनानि तस्थुः
That very embryo the waters first held, where all the gods assembled together; fixed in the navel of the unborn, in which all the worlds are established.
न तं विदाथ य इमा जजानान्यद्युष्माकमन्तरं बभूव । नीहारेण प्रावृता जल्प्या चासुतृप उक्थशासश्चरन्ति
You do not know him who brought forth these things; something different has arisen among you. Covered by mist and confused speech, those who are unsatisfied with life wander, reciting hymns.
यस्ते मन्योऽविधद्वज्र सायक सह ओजः पुष्यति विश्वमानुषक् । साह्याम दासमार्यं त्वया युजा सहस्कृतेन सहसा सहस्वता
O Wrath, whose weapon is the bolt and arrow, whose power and might surpass all humanity—may we, with your aid, strong and victorious, overcome both foe and friend.
मन्युरिन्द्रो मन्युरेवास देवो मन्युर्होता वरुणो जातवेदाः । मन्युं विश ईळते मानुषीर्याः पाहि नो मन्यो तपसा सजोषाः
Wrath is Indra, Wrath is truly the god; Wrath is the priest, Varuṇa, and the all-knowing fire. People worship Wrath; O Wrath, protect us, united with your fervor.
अभीहि मन्यो तवसस्तवीयान्तपसा युजा वि जहि शत्रून् ।* अमित्रहा वृत्रहा दस्युहा च विश्वा वसून्या भरा त्वं नः
Come forth, O Wrath, mightier than the mighty; with your fervor as ally, strike down our enemies. Slayer of foes, destroyer of obstacles and demons, bring us all treasures.
त्वं हि मन्यो अभिभूत्योजाः स्वयम्भूर्भामो अभिमातिषाहः । विश्वचर्षणिः सहुरिः सहावानस्मास्वोजः पृतनासु धेहि
For you, O Wrath, are unconquerable in strength, self-born, blazing, crusher of opposition; you are the champion of all peoples, powerful and victorious—place your might with us in battle.
अभागः सन्नप परेतो अस्मि तव क्रत्वा तविषस्य प्रचेतः । तं त्वा मन्यो अक्रतुर्जिहीळाहं स्वा तनूर्बलदेयाय मेहि
Helpless and powerless am I, separated from fortune; by your will, O wise and mighty Wrath, I seek you. I, lacking resolve, implore you—come to me, strengthen my body with power.
अयं ते अस्म्युप मेह्यर्वाङ्प्रतीचीनः सहुरे विश्वधायः । मन्यो वज्रिन्नभि मामा ववृत्स्व हनाव दस्यूँरुत बोध्यापेः
Here I am, come near to me, O champion, all-knowing; O Wrath, wielder of the bolt, turn toward me. Let us strike down the enemies—arise, be awake to the call.
अभि प्रेहि दक्षिणतो भवा मेऽधा वृत्राणि जङ्घनाव भूरि । जुहोमि ते धरुणं मध्वो अग्रमुभा उपांशु प्रथमा पिबाव
Advance from the right, be my ally; let us destroy many obstacles. I offer you the foremost portion of the sweet drink—let us both drink the first together in secret.
त्वया मन्यो सरथमारुजन्तो हर्षमाणासो धृषिता मरुत्वः । तिग्मेषव आयुधा संशिशाना अभि प्र यन्तु नरो अग्निरूपाः
With you, O Wrath, mounting the chariot, rejoicing, emboldened, accompanied by the Maruts, let the men, sharp-arrowed, armed, advance, blazing like fire.
