When the gods stood in the waters, deeply stirred, then, as if dancing, a sharp dust was swept away.
When the gods, ascetics, filled the worlds, then, hidden in the ocean, you carried the sun.
Eight sons of Aditi were born from her body. The gods went with seven; they cast out Mārtāṇḍa.
With seven sons, Aditi went to the earlier age. For offspring and for death, she brought Mārtāṇḍa again.
The mighty was born for strength, for power, delightful, most vigorous, full of pride. The Maruts increased Indra here, when the mother placed the hero in her womb.
Those who sit in ambush, even with their cunning devices, have grown strong in their many praises of Indra; but like a woman in labor, they are delivered from darkness by his mighty stride, and their offspring emerge from the womb.
Your feet are exalted when you set out to conquer, and even those who are powerful here grow; O Indra, you have struck down a thousand Sālāvṛkas, and with the Aśvins you have increased in might.
With united purpose you hasten to the sacrifice, and you bear the two Aśvins as friends; in the two vessels, Indra, you hold a thousand, and the heroic Aśvins have granted generous gifts.
Rejoicing in the truth, for the sake of offspring, with your companions, Indra, you have sought the desired goal; with these powers you approached the Dasyu with your magic, and the red mists fell away from the obstacles.
Even those with ancient names, the dwellers, you have cast down, Indra, just as you drive away the dawns; with seers and companions, with eager intent, you went forth, and with them you struck down the hostile.
You struck down Namuci and Makhasyu, the Dāsa who devised deceit against the seer; you made pleasant paths for Manu, O god, as if smoothing the way for chariots.
You have surpassed these, O Indra, in name and power, and you have placed dominion in your grasp; the gods rejoice in your strength, and you have subdued the deep-rooted forests.
When his wheel was set in the waters, then for him the honeyed covering was spread; whatever is fixed on earth, whatever milk is in the cows, you have placed in the plants.
When they say, 'He came from the horse,' or 'He was born of strength,' some imagine him thus; anger came forth and stood in the dwellings, from which Indra was born and knows his origin.
The winged birds, the noble-minded seers, approached Indra, not failing in devotion; remove the darkness, grant us sight, release us as one unbinds the bound from a treasure.
Whether I praise the treasures, or seek with thought, or with sacrifices the two worlds; whether I call upon the swift ones who possess wealth in battle, or those who are renowned for their generous hearing.
The mighty one among them calls upon the sky, with glorious mind he approaches the earth; where the gods, seeing, act for well-being, where heaven with its own powers makes room.
This song is for those immortals who grant the treasure to the humble; may they, who accomplish both thought and sacrifice, bestow upon us the wealth of the Vasus without delay.
To that distant place, the sons of Indra strive, those who wish to cross the wide, cow-rich expanse; those many sons, in a single effort, seek to milk the great, thousand-streamed, mighty one.
Like Śacī, make Indra your helper, unconquered, subduing the hostile in battle; the generous, bountiful, well-praised Maghavan, who wields the mighty, manly thunderbolt.
Whenever Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, has taken the most glorious names of old, the strong lord of might, the son of Pūru, let us call upon him to accomplish this deed.
Now the poet proclaims the supreme greatness of the waters in the house of the Sun; the seven rivers have flowed in threefold courses, the swift Sindhu surpasses all in might.
Varuṇa has opened the paths for you to travel, O Sindhu, when you rush forth with your waves; you move over the earth's slope, along the ridge, when you, the foremost of the moving ones, are set in motion.
A sound resounds in the sky, rising above the earth; she sends forth her boundless force with her radiance. Like rains thundering from the cloud, when the river comes, she bellows like a bull.
To you, O river, the mothers hasten as to a young calf, lowing, like cows eager for milk. Like a king in battle, you lead them onward; when you rush, you do not leave any of them behind.
May Ganga, Yamuna, Sarasvati, Sutudri, and Parushni join in this praise of mine; hear me, Asikni, Marudvridha, Vitasta, Arjikiya, and Sushoma.
With Trishtama, the first to flow together, with Susartu, Rasa, and Shveta, you, O river, with Kubha, Gomati, and Krumu, mighty ones, proceed with your chariots.
Swift and shining, great in majesty, she carries away the old, she stirs the realms. The river, unfailing, sweeps away obstacles, manifesting wondrous forms like splendid horses.
The river is rich in horses, splendid in chariots, adorned in beauty, golden, skillfully fashioned, full of strength. She is woolly, youthful, virtuous, and truly she bears sweet abundance.
The river has yoked a smooth chariot for the Ashvins; with it she wins the prize in this contest. Her greatness is praised today—unfailing, glorious, and resplendent.
