अवो द्वाभ्यां पर एकया गा गुहा तिष्ठन्तीरनृतस्य सेतौ । बृहस्पतिस्तमसि ज्योतिरिच्छन्नुदुस्रा आकर्वि हि तिस्र आवः
Two opened, one remained beyond; the cows stood hidden at the barrier of untruth. Brhaspati, seeking light in darkness, brought forth the three dawns, indeed he uncovered them.
विभिद्या पुरं शयथेमपाचीं निस्त्रीणि साकमुदधेरकृन्तत् । बृहस्पतिरुषसं सूर्यं गामर्कं विवेद स्तनयन्निव द्यौः
Splitting the stronghold, lying in the west, he cut through three together from the ocean. Brhaspati, thundering like the sky, discovered the dawn, the sun, the cows, and the light.
इन्द्रो वलं रक्षितारं दुघानां करेणेव वि चकर्ता रवेण । स्वेदाञ्जिभिराशिरमिच्छमानोऽरोदयत्पणिमा गा अमुष्णात्
Indra struck Vala, the guardian of the cows, as with a hand, with his roar. Desiring the butter-clad wealth, he made the Panis weep and released the cows.
स ईं सत्येभिः सखिभिः शुचद्भिर्गोधायसं वि धनसैरदर्दः । ब्रह्मणस्पतिर्वृषभिर्वराहैर्घर्मस्वेदेभिर्द्रविणं व्यानट्
With true, shining companions, he shattered the iron fortress with his powers. Brahmanaspati, with mighty bulls and chosen ones, with the heat of sweat, distributed the wealth.
ते सत्येन मनसा गोपतिं गा इयानास इषणयन्त धीभिः । बृहस्पतिर्मिथोअवद्यपेभिरुदुस्रिया असृजत स्वयुग्भिः
With true minds, they sought the lord of the cows, striving with their thoughts. Brhaspati, with mutual praise, released the dawns with their own yokes.
तं वर्धयन्तो मतिभिः शिवाभिः सिंहमिव नानदतं सधस्थे । बृहस्पतिं वृषणं शूरसातौ भरेभरे अनु मदेम जिष्णुम्
Exalting him with auspicious thoughts, roaring like a lion in the assembly, may we honor Brhaspati, the mighty, victorious in battle, in every contest.
यदा वाजमसनद्विश्वरूपमा द्यामरुक्षदुत्तराणि सद्म । बृहस्पतिं वृषणं वर्धयन्तो नाना सन्तो बिभ्रतो ज्योतिरासा
When he gained the all-formed prize, he made the upper realms of heaven resound. Exalting Brhaspati, the mighty, being diverse, they bore the light as their possession.
सत्यामाशिषं कृणुता वयोधै कीरिं चिद्ध्यवथ स्वेभिरेवैः । पश्चा मृधो अप भवन्तु विश्वास्तद्रोदसी शृणुतं विश्वमिन्वे
Grant us true blessings for long life; even the singer you help with your own gifts. May all hostilities be left behind; may heaven and earth hear everything we seek.
इन्द्रो मह्ना महतो अर्णवस्य वि मूर्धानमभिनदर्बुदस्य । अहन्नहिमरिणात्सप्त सिन्धून्देवैर्द्यावापृथिवी प्रावतं नः
Indra, by his greatness, thundered over the head of the great serpent. He slew the dragon, released the seven rivers, and with the gods, heaven and earth protected us.
उदप्रुतो न वयो रक्षमाणा वावदतो अभ्रियस्येव घोषाः । गिरिभ्रजो नोर्मयो मदन्तो बृहस्पतिमभ्यर्का अनावन्
Like birds rising up, protecting themselves, their voices resound like those of the weak. Born from the mountain, the roaring ones, exulting, the hymns approach Brhaspati.
सं गोभिराङ्गिरसो नक्षमाणो भग इवेदर्यमणं निनाय । जने मित्रो न दम्पती अनक्ति बृहस्पते वाजयाशूँरिवाजौ
With cows, the Angirases, striving, led him like Bhaga to Aryaman. In the assembly, like a couple, Mitra unites; O Brhaspati, grant us strength in the contest, O swift one.
साध्वर्या अतिथिनीरिषिरा स्पार्हाः सुवर्णा अनवद्यरूपाः । बृहस्पतिः पर्वतेभ्यो वितूर्या निर्गा ऊपे यवमिव स्थिविभ्यः
The sacrificial wives, the honored guests, radiant, golden, flawless in form—Bṛhaspati drove them out from the mountains, as one winnows barley from the chaff.
आप्रुषायन्मधुन ऋतस्य योनिमवक्षिपन्नर्क उल्कामिव द्योः । बृहस्पतिरुद्धरन्नश्मनो गा भूम्या उद्नेव वि त्वचं बिभेद
He, pouring forth, cast down the honeyed source of truth, the Sun hurled a flame as if from the sky; Bṛhaspati, lifting the cows from the stone, split the earth's skin as water splits a covering.
अप ज्योतिषा तमो अन्तरिक्षादुद्नः शीपालमिव वात आजत् । बृहस्पतिरनुमृश्या वलस्याभ्रमिव वात आ चक्र आ गाः
With light he dispelled the darkness from the midspace, as wind drives a shepherd from the water; Bṛhaspati, searching out, scattered Vala as wind scatters a cloud, and brought forth the cows.
यदा वलस्य पीयतो जसुं भेद्बृहस्पतिरग्नितपोभिरर्कैः । दद्भिर्न जिह्वा परिविष्टमाददाविर्निधीँरकृणोदुस्रियाणाम्
When Bṛhaspati, with fire's heat and hymns, split the stronghold of greedy Vala, he seized what was encircled, as a tongue laps up, and revealed the hidden treasures of the dawns.
बृहस्पतिरमत हि त्यदासां नाम स्वरीणां सदने गुहा यत् । आण्डेव भित्त्वा शकुनस्य गर्भमुदुस्रियाः पर्वतस्य त्मनाजत्
Bṛhaspati alone knew their names, those of the singers, hidden in their dwelling; like breaking the shell of a bird's egg, he brought forth the dawns from the mountain by his power.
अश्नापिनद्धं मधु पर्यपश्यन्मत्स्यं न दीन उदनि क्षियन्तम् । निष्टज्जभार चमसं न वृक्षाद्बृहस्पतिर्विरवेणा विकृत्य
They saw the honey, enclosed and guarded, like a fish, helpless, dwelling in the water; Bṛhaspati, with a roar, broke it out as one shakes a ladle from a tree.
सोषामविन्दत्स स्वः सो अग्निं सो अर्केण वि बबाधे तमांसि । बृहस्पतिर्गोवपुषो वलस्य निर्मज्जानं न पर्वणो जभार
He found the light, he found the fire, he drove away the darkness with his hymn; Bṛhaspati, from the body of Vala the cow, seized the marrow as one takes the joint from a limb.
हिमेव पर्णा मुषिता वनानि बृहस्पतिनाकृपयद्वलो गाः । अनानुकृत्यमपुनश्चकार यात्सूर्यामासा मिथ उच्चरातः
As leaves are stripped from trees by frost, so Bṛhaspati, unpitying, stripped Vala of the cows; he made what was not to be repeated, as the Sun and Dawn rise apart from each other.
अभि श्यावं न कृशनेभिरश्वं नक्षत्रेभिः पितरो द्यामपिंशन् । रात्र्यां तमो अदधुर्ज्योतिरहन्बृहस्पतिर्भिनदद्रिं विदद्गाः
As fathers adorn the sky with stars, like a dark horse with white markings, they set darkness in the night and light in the day; Bṛhaspati split the rock and revealed the cows.
इदमकर्म नमो अभ्रियाय यः पूर्वीरन्वानोनवीति । बृहस्पतिः स हि गोभिः सो अश्वैः स वीरेभिः स नृभिर्नो वयो धात्
This deed, a homage to the mighty, who follows the ancient ones anew—Bṛhaspati, with cows, with horses, with heroes, with men, grant us long life.
भद्रा अग्नेर्वध्र्यश्वस्य संदृशो वामी प्रणीतिः सुरणा उपेतयः । यदीं सुमित्रा विशो अग्र इन्धते घृतेनाहुतो जरते दविद्युतत्
Auspicious is the guidance of Agni, of Vadhryaśva, pleasing, bringing blessings; when the friendly clans kindle him at the forefront, summoned with ghee, he shines, never failing.
घृतमग्नेर्वध्र्यश्वस्य वर्धनं घृतमन्नं घृतम्वस्य मेदनम् । घृतेनाहुत उर्विया वि पप्रथे सूर्य इव रोचते सर्पिरासुतिः
Ghee is the growth of Agni, of Vadhryaśva; ghee is his food, ghee his strength and delight; kindled with ghee, he spreads wide, and his stream of clarified butter shines like the Sun.
यत्ते मनुर्यदनीकं सुमित्रः समीधे अग्ने तदिदं नवीयः । स रेवच्छोच स गिरो जुषस्व स वाजं दर्षि स इह श्रवो धाः
What Manu, what Anīka, what Sumitra offered to you, Agni, in the kindling—may this be renewed; shine forth with wealth, accept our songs, grant us strength and fame here.
यं त्वा पूर्वमीळितो वध्र्यश्वः समीधे अग्ने स इदं जुषस्व । स न स्तिपा उत भवा तनूपा दात्रं रक्षस्व यदिदं ते अस्मे
Whom Vadhryaśva of old invoked in the kindling, Agni, accept this offering; be our protector and guardian of our persons, preserve the gift that is yours among us.
भवा द्युम्नी वाध्र्यश्वोत गोपा मा त्वा तारीदभिमातिर्जनानाम् । शूर इव धृष्णुश्च्यवनः सुमित्रः प्र नु वोचं वाध्र्यश्वस्य नाम
Be glorious, O Vadhryaśva, and a guardian, let not the enmity of men overcome you; like a bold hero, ever advancing, O Sumitra, I now proclaim the name of Vadhryaśva.
समज्र्या पर्वत्या वसूनि दासा वृत्राण्यार्या जिगेथ । शूर इव धृष्णुश्च्यवनो जनानां त्वमग्ने पृतनायूँरभि ष्याः
With the noble mountain you have won the treasures, you have conquered the Dasa and Arya foes; like a bold hero, ever advancing among men, Agni, you are the leader in battle.
दीर्घतन्तुर्बृहदुक्षायमग्निः सहस्रस्तरीः शतनीथ ऋभ्वा । द्युमान्द्युमत्सु नृभिर्मृज्यमानः सुमित्रेषु दीदयो देवयत्सु
Long-threaded, of great abundance is Agni, a thousandfold, with a hundred guides, skillful; shining among the shining, purified by men, he blazes among the Sumitras, among those who worship the gods.
त्वे धेनुः सुदुघा जातवेदोऽसश्चतेव समना सबर्धुक् । त्वं नृभिर्दक्षिणावद्भिरग्ने सुमित्रेभिरिध्यसे देवयद्भिः
In you, O Jātavedas, the cow yields sweet milk, as if united, with a bellowing calf; you are kindled by men skilled in giving, O Agni, by the Sumitras, by those who worship the gods.
देवाश्चित्ते अमृता जातवेदो महिमानं वाध्र्यश्व प्र वोचन् । यत्सम्पृच्छं मानुषीर्विश आयन्त्वं नृभिरजयस्त्वावृधेभिः
The immortal gods, O Jātavedas, declared your greatness, O Vadhryashva; when you inquire, let the human clans come, for you have conquered with men who are strong in you.
