कथा देवानां कतमस्य यामनि सुमन्तु नाम शृण्वतां मनामहे । को मृळाति कतमो नो मयस्करत्कतम ऊती अभ्या ववर्तति
Of the gods, in which assembly shall we honor the name of the one who listens? Who will show mercy, who will bring us happiness, and whose aid will come to us?
क्रतूयन्ति क्रतवो हृत्सु धीतयो वेनन्ति वेनाः पतयन्त्या दिशः । न मर्डिता विद्यते अन्य एभ्यो देवेषु मे अधि कामा अयंसत
Intentions strive, thoughts in the heart strive, desires seek, longings fly in all directions; there is no one else among the gods who can be called upon for favor—my desires have turned to them.
नरा वा शंसं पूषणमगोह्यमग्निं देवेद्धमभ्यर्चसे गिरा । सूर्यामासा चन्द्रमसा यमं दिवि त्रितं वातमुषसमक्तुमश्विना
Whether I praise the men, Pūṣan, the unapproachable, Agni kindled by the gods, with my song; Sūrya, the dawns, the moon, Yama in heaven, Trita, Vāta, Uṣas, the night, the Aśvins.
कथा कविस्तुवीरवान्कया गिरा बृहस्पतिर्वावृधते सुवृक्तिभिः । अज एकपात्सुहवेभिरृक्वभिरहिः शृणोतु बुध्न्यो हवीमनि
How has Bṛhaspati, the wise, grown strong with what song, with what praise, with what excellent hymns? May Aja Ekapād, the easily invoked, the serpent of the deep, hear the offering.
दक्षस्य वादिते जन्मनि व्रते राजाना मित्रावरुणा विवाससि । अतूर्तपन्थाः पुरुरथो अर्यमा सप्तहोता विषुरूपेषु जन्मसु
At the birth, in the ordinance, at the command of Dakṣa, you, Mitra and Varuṇa, are invoked as kings; Aryaman, of many chariots, whose path is unimpeded, the seven priests in their manifold forms at birth.
ते नो अर्वन्तो हवनश्रुतो हवं विश्वे शृण्वन्तु वाजिनो मितद्रवः । सहस्रसा मेधसाताविव त्मना महो ये धनं समिथेषु जभ्रिरे
May those swift ones, attentive to the call, all the vigorous, friendly, and generous ones, hear our invocation; like those who have won a thousand prizes by their own strength, who have seized great wealth in assemblies.
प्र वो वायुं रथयुजं पुरंधिं स्तोमैः कृणुध्वं सख्याय पूषणम् । ते हि देवस्य सवितुः सवीमनि क्रतुं सचन्ते सचितः सचेतसः
With praises, make Vāyu, yoked to the chariot, and Pūṣan, the provider, your friends; for they, indeed, in the power of the divine Savitar, join their will with the thoughtful, with those who are united in mind.
त्रिः सप्त सस्रा नद्यो महीरपो वनस्पतीन्पर्वताँ अग्निमूतये । कृशानुमस्तॄन्तिष्यं सधस्थ आ रुद्रं रुद्रेषु रुद्रियं हवामहे
Three times seven mighty rivers, great waters, trees, mountains, we call to the fire for worship; the slender one, the traverser, the supporter in the assembly—among the Rudras, we invoke the Rudra, the Rudriya.
सरस्वती सरयुः सिन्धुरूर्मिभिर्महो महीरवसा यन्तु वक्षणीः । देवीरापो मातरः सूदयित्न्वो घृतवत्पयो मधुमन्नो अर्चत
Let Sarasvati, Sarayu, and Sindhu, with their waves, come with great strength and abundance to our fields; divine waters, mothers, nourishing, pour forth ghee-rich, honey-sweet milk—sing forth your praise.
उत माता बृहद्दिवा शृणोतु नस्त्वष्टा देवेभिर्जनिभिः पिता वचः । ऋभुक्षा वाजो रथस्पतिर्भगो रण्वः शंसः शशमानस्य पातु नः
May the great mother, the broad heaven, listen to us; may Tvashtar with the divine generations, and the father, hear our words; may Ribhukshan, Vaja, the charioteer, Bhaga, the delightful one, and Shamsa protect us who seek joy.
रण्वः संदृष्टौ पितुमाँ इव क्षयो भद्रा रुद्राणां मरुतामुपस्तुतिः । गोभिः ष्याम यशसो जनेष्वा सदा देवास इळया सचेमहि
May the delightful assembly, like a father's house, be our dwelling; may the good praise of the Rudras and Maruts be with us; with cattle may we be renowned among people; may we always unite with the gods through prosperity.
यां मे धियं मरुत इन्द्र देवा अददात वरुण मित्र यूयम् । तां पीपयत पयसेव धेनुं कुविद्गिरो अधि रथे वहाथ
The insight which you, O Maruts, Indra, gods, Varuna, Mitra, have given me—may you fill it, as one fills a cow with milk; perhaps you will carry our songs upon your chariot.
कुविदङ्ग प्रति यथा चिदस्य नः सजात्यस्य मरुतो बुबोधथ । नाभा यत्र प्रथमं संनसामहे तत्र जामित्वमदितिर्दधातु नः
Perhaps, Maruts, you have indeed recognized us as your own kin; where at the navel we first assemble, there may Aditi establish our lineage.
ते हि द्यावापृथिवी मातरा मही देवी देवाञ्जन्मना यज्ञिये इतः । उभे बिभृत उभयं भरीमभिः पुरू रेतांसि पितृभिश्च सिञ्चतः
For you, O Heaven and Earth, great mothers, goddesses, worthy of worship among the gods by birth, you both uphold both worlds, bearing all; you pour forth many seeds together with the fathers.
वि षा होत्रा विश्वमश्नोति वार्यं बृहस्पतिररमतिः पनीयसी । ग्रावा यत्र मधुषुदुच्यते बृहदवीवशन्त मतिभिर्मनीषिणः
Their priesthood attains all desirable things; Brihaspati, the bestower of gifts, is most generous; where the stone utters sweet sound, there the wise, inspired ones, seek greatness with their thoughts.
एवा कविस्तुवीरवाँ ऋतज्ञा द्रविणस्युर्द्रविणसश्चकानः । उक्थेभिरत्र मतिभिश्च विप्रोऽपीपयद्गयो दिव्यानि जन्म
Thus the sage, mighty, knower of truth, bestower of wealth, making riches, with hymns and thoughts here, the inspired one, has filled the divine births with life.
एवा प्लतेः सूनुरवीवृधद्वो विश्व आदित्या अदिते मनीषी । ईशानासो नरो अमर्त्येनास्तावि जनो दिव्यो गयेन
Thus the son of Plati has grown strong through you, all the Adityas, the wise ones of Aditi; lords, men with immortal power, may the heavenly race stand firm with life.
अग्निरिन्द्रो वरुणो मित्रो अर्यमा वायुः पूषा सरस्वती सजोषसः । आदित्या विष्णुर्मरुतः स्वर्बृहत्सोमो रुद्रो अदितिर्ब्रह्मणस्पतिः
Agni, Indra, Varuna, Mitra, Aryaman, Vayu, Pushan, Sarasvati, united; the Adityas, Vishnu, the Maruts, Svarbhanu, Soma, Rudra, Aditi, and Brahmanaspati.
इन्द्राग्नी वृत्रहत्येषु सत्पती मिथो हिन्वाना तन्वा समोकसा । अन्तरिक्षं मह्या पप्रुरोजसा सोमो घृतश्रीर्महिमानमीरयन्
Indra and Agni, victorious over Vritra, true lords, stirring each other, united in form; they fill the midspace with their might; Soma, radiant with ghee, has magnified their greatness.
तेषां हि मह्ना महतामनर्वणां स्तोमाँ इयर्म्यृतज्ञा ऋतावृधाम् । ये अप्सवमर्णवं चित्रराधसस्ते नो रासन्तां महये सुमित्र्याः
To them, great in majesty, flawless, I send forth praises—knowers and increasers of truth; those who possess the waters, the ocean, and splendid gifts—may they grant us the favor of good friendship.
स्वर्णरमन्तरिक्षाणि रोचना द्यावाभूमी पृथिवीं स्कम्भुरोजसा । पृक्षा इव महयन्तः सुरातयो देवा स्तवन्ते मनुषाय सूरयः
The shining ones have propped up the midspaces, the luminous realms, heaven and earth, and the wide earth with their might; exalting like streams, the generous gods praise with hymns for the benefit of humankind.
मित्राय शिक्ष वरुणाय दाशुषे या सम्राजा मनसा न प्रयुच्छतः । ययोर्धाम धर्मणा रोचते बृहद्ययोरुभे रोदसी नाधसी वृतौ
Serve Mitra, honor Varuna, the generous, those two sovereigns who do not fail in thought; whose abode shines with righteousness, whose greatness fills both heaven and earth, unshaken in strength.
या गौर्वर्तनिं पर्येति निष्कृतं पयो दुहाना व्रतनीरवारतः । सा प्रब्रुवाणा वरुणाय दाशुषे देवेभ्यो दाशद्धविषा विवस्वते
The cow, moving along her path, circles back, giving milk, steadfast in her vow, never failing; she, speaking forth, gives to Varuna, the generous, and to the gods, offering the oblation to Vivasvat.
दिवक्षसो अग्निजिह्वा ऋतावृध ऋतस्य योनिं विमृशन्त आसते । द्यां स्कभित्व्यप आ चक्रुरोजसा यज्ञं जनित्वी तन्वी नि मामृजुः
Heaven-dwellers, with tongues of fire, increasers of truth, sit contemplating the womb of truth; having propped up the sky with their might, they made the sacrifice, straightening their forms.
परिक्षिता पितरा पूर्वजावरी ऋतस्य योना क्षयतः समोकसा । द्यावापृथिवी वरुणाय सव्रते घृतवत्पयो महिषाय पिन्वतः
The two guardians, ancient and recent fathers, dwelling together in the womb of truth; Heaven and Earth, for Varuna, steadfast in law, pour forth ghee-rich milk for the mighty one.
पर्जन्यावाता वृषभा पुरीषिणेन्द्रवायू वरुणो मित्रो अर्यमा । देवाँ आदित्याँ अदितिं हवामहे ये पार्थिवासो दिव्यासो अप्सु ये
We call upon Parjanya, the Wind, the mighty Bulls who pour down, Indra and Vāyu, Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman; the gods, the Ādityas, and Aditi, those who dwell on earth, those who are in heaven, and those who are in the waters.
त्वष्टारं वायुमृभवो य ओहते दैव्या होतारा उषसं स्वस्तये । बृहस्पतिं वृत्रखादं सुमेधसमिन्द्रियं सोमं धनसा उ ईमहे
We invoke Tvaṣṭṛ, Vāyu, the Ṛbhus—whoever is to be called—the divine Hotṛs, Uṣas for well-being; we seek Bṛhaspati, the slayer of Vṛtra, wise and powerful, Soma, and the Wealth-givers.
ब्रह्म गामश्वं जनयन्त ओषधीर्वनस्पतीन्पृथिवीं पर्वताँ अपः । सूर्यं दिवि रोहयन्तः सुदानव आर्या व्रता विसृजन्तो अधि क्षमि
The gods generated prayer, cattle, horses, plants, forest trees, the earth, mountains, and waters; they caused the sun to rise in the sky, the generous ones, releasing the noble laws upon the earth.
भुज्युमंहसः पिपृथो निरश्विना श्यावं पुत्रं वध्रिमत्या अजिन्वतम् । कमद्युवं विमदायोहथुर्युवं विष्णाप्वं विश्वकायाव सृजथः
You, Aśvins, rescued Bhujyu from distress, you brought forth the dark son of Vadhrimatī; you, young ones, delighted in the desire of Kamadyu, you released Viṣṇāpva for the all-formed one.
पावीरवी तन्यतुरेकपादजो दिवो धर्ता सिन्धुरापः समुद्रियः । विश्वे देवासः शृणवन्वचांसि मे सरस्वती सह धीभिः पुरंध्या
Pāvīravī, the single-footed offspring of the Thunderer, the supporter of heaven, the river, the ocean-born; may all the gods listen to my words—Sarasvatī, together with the wise and bountiful Puramdhi.
