तेऽवर्धन्त स्वतवसो महित्वना नाकं तस्थुरुरु चक्रिरे सदः । विष्णुर्यद्धावद्वृषणं मदच्युतं वयो न सीदन्नधि बर्हिषि प्रिये
They, mighty in their own power, grew in greatness, stood in the sky, and made a broad seat; when Viṣṇu strode forth, the bull, overflowing with delight, like birds they settled on the beloved sacred grass.
शूरा इवेद्युयुधयो न जग्मयः श्रवस्यवो न पृतनासु येतिरे । भयन्ते विश्वा भुवना मरुद्भ्यो राजान इव त्वेषसंदृशो नरः
Like warriors eager for battle, like heroes striving for fame in contests, the Maruts are feared by all beings; like kings of terrible aspect, the men tremble before them.
त्वष्टा यद्वज्रं सुकृतं हिरण्ययं सहस्रभृष्टिं स्वपा अवर्तयत् । धत्त इन्द्रो नर्यपांसि कर्तवेऽहन्वृत्रं निरपामौब्जदर्णवम्
When Tvaṣṭṛ fashioned the well-made, golden thunderbolt with a thousand edges, the wise one, Indra took it to perform heroic deeds; with it he struck down Vṛtra and released the waters into the ocean.
ऊर्ध्वं नुनुद्रेऽवतं त ओजसा दादृहाणं चिद्बिभिदुर्वि पर्वतम् । धमन्तो वाणं मरुतः सुदानवो मदे सोमस्य रण्यानि चक्रिरे
With their strength they drove the cloud upward, they split even the firm mountain; blowing the trumpet, O generous Maruts, in the joy of Soma, they performed glorious deeds.
जिह्मं नुनुद्रेऽवतं तया दिशासिञ्चन्नुत्सं गोतमाय तृष्णजे । आ गच्छन्तीमवसा चित्रभानवः कामं विप्रस्य तर्पयन्त धामभिः
They drove the crooked cloud in that direction, they poured the stream for the thirsty Gotama; coming with their shining help, they satisfied the desire of the inspired one with their gifts.
या वः शर्म शशमानाय सन्ति त्रिधातूनि दाशुषे यच्छताधि । अस्मभ्यं तानि मरुतो वि यन्त रयिं नो धत्त वृषणः सुवीरम्
Whatever shelter you have for the one who seeks joy, whatever threefold protections for the worshipper, grant those to us, O Maruts; bestow wealth upon us, O mighty ones, and heroic sons.
मरुतो यस्य हि क्षये पाथा दिवो विमहसः । स सुगोपातमो जनः
He in whose dwelling the Maruts, sons of the great sky, abide—he is the most well-guarded among men.
यज्ञैर्वा यज्ञवाहसो विप्रस्य वा मतीनाम् । मरुतः शृणुता हवम्
Whether by sacrifices, O bearers of the offering, or by the thoughts of the inspired, O Maruts, hear the call.
उत वा यस्य वाजिनोऽनु विप्रमतक्षत । स गन्ता गोमति व्रजे
And he whose swift ones follow after the inspired, he will go to the herd rich in cattle.
अस्य वीरस्य बर्हिषि सुतः सोमो दिविष्टिषु । उक्थं मदश्च शस्यते
For this hero, on the sacred grass, the pressed Soma is praised in the heavenly places, with hymn and with exhilaration.
अस्य श्रोषन्त्वा भुवो विश्वा यश्चर्षणीरभि । सूरं चित्सस्रुषीरिषः
May all peoples listen to his call, may even the sun, eager for riches, hasten to him.
पूर्वीभिर्हि ददाशिम शरद्भिर्मरुतो वयम् । अवोभिश्चर्षणीनाम्
With many autumns, O Maruts, may we share, with your aids, the blessings of peoples.
सुभगः स प्रयज्यवो मरुतो अस्तु मर्त्यः । यस्य प्रयांसि पर्षथ
Blessed is that mortal, O Maruts, whom you lead safely on the paths of sacrifice.
शशमानस्य वा नरः स्वेदस्य सत्यशवसः । विदा कामस्य वेनतः
O men, know the desires of the one who, seeking joy, is sweating, truly strong.
यूयं तत्सत्यशवस आविष्कर्त महित्वना । विध्यता विद्युता रक्षः
You, truly mighty, reveal that power in greatness; strike down the demon with your lightning.
गूहता गुह्यं तमो वि यात विश्वमत्रिणम् । ज्योतिष्कर्ता यदुश्मसि
Drive away the hidden darkness, scatter all that restrains; make light, for you are strong.
प्रत्वक्षसः प्रतवसो विरप्शिनोऽनानता अविथुरा ऋजीषिणः । जुष्टतमासो नृतमासो अञ्जिभिर्व्यानज्रे के चिदुस्रा इव स्तृभिः
With forward faces, with forward might, shining, unbending, steadfast, straight-moving, most welcome, most manly, adorned with ornaments, some among you are like bright mares with harness.
उपह्वरेषु यदचिध्वं ययिं वय इव मरुतः केन चित्पथा । श्चोतन्ति कोशा उप वो रथेष्वा घृतमुक्षता मधुवर्णमर्चते
When you, Maruts, rush in the valleys like birds, by some path, the vessels pour out, on your chariots, ghee flows, honey-colored, to be praised.
प्रैषामज्मेषु विथुरेव रेजते भूमिर्यामेषु यद्ध युञ्जते शुभे । ते क्रीळयो धुनयो भ्राजदृष्टयः स्वयं महित्वं पनयन्त धूतयः
The earth trembles beneath your chariots as you yoke them for the journey; your playful, shaking, shining-eyed bands themselves manifest greatness.
स हि स्वसृत्पृषदश्वो युवा गणोऽया ईशानस्तविषीभिरावृतः । असि सत्य ऋणयावानेद्योऽस्या धियः प्राविताथा वृषा गणः
For he, the young troop with dappled horses, is self-born, powerful, surrounded by strength; you are true, debtless, praiseworthy, the protector of this prayer, the mighty troop.
पितुः प्रत्नस्य जन्मना वदामसि सोमस्य जिह्वा प्र जिगाति चक्षसा । यदीमिन्द्रं शम्यृक्वाण आशतादिन्नामानि यज्ञियानि दधिरे
We speak of the ancient birth of the Father; the tongue of Soma advances with vision; when the singer seeks Indra, then the worthy names are established.
श्रियसे कं भानुभिः सं मिमिक्षिरे ते रश्मिभिस्त ऋक्वभिः सुखादयः । ते वाशीमन्त इष्मिणो अभीरवो विद्रे प्रियस्य मारुतस्य धाम्नः
For glory, they have measured themselves with beams; with rays, with hymns, they are bringers of delight; those with banners, armed, courageous, have known the beloved abode of the Marut.
आ विद्युन्मद्भिर्मरुतः स्वर्कै रथेभिर्यात ऋष्टिमद्भिरश्वपर्णैः । आ वर्षिष्ठया न इषा वयो न पप्तता सुमायाः
Come, Maruts, with your shining, lightning-laden chariots, with spears, with horses adorned; fly forth with the richest nourishment, like birds, with good skill.
तेऽरुणेभिर्वरमा पिशङ्गैः शुभे कं यान्ति रथतूर्भिरश्वैः । रुक्मो न चित्रः स्वधितीवान्पव्या रथस्य जङ्घनन्त भूम
With ruddy, best, tawny horses, they go in splendor with chariots; like a bright gold ornament, with sharpened axes, the wheels of the chariot strike the earth.
श्रिये कं वो अधि तनूषु वाशीर्मेधा वना न कृणवन्त ऊर्ध्वा । युष्मभ्यं कं मरुतः सुजातास्तुविद्युम्नासो धनयन्ते अद्रिम्
For glory, your bands are set upon your bodies; like wise ones, they stand upright; for you, Maruts, the well-born, very mighty, break the rock.
अहानि गृध्राः पर्या व आगुरिमां धियं वार्कार्यां च देवीम् । ब्रह्म कृण्वन्तो गोतमासो अर्कैरूर्ध्वं नुनुद्र उत्सधिं पिबध्यै
The greedy ones have surrounded your days; this thought, this divine inspiration, O gods; the Gotamas, making prayers with hymns, have raised the well for drinking.
एतत्त्यन्न योजनमचेति सस्वर्ह यन्मरुतो गोतमो वः । पश्यन्हिरण्यचक्रानयोदंष्ट्रान्विधावतो वराहून्
This, your yoking, has reached its goal, O Maruts, as Gotama has sung for you; seeing your golden-wheeled, iron-toothed, swift, boar-like forms.
एषा स्या वो मरुतोऽनुभर्त्री प्रति ष्टोभति वाघतो न वाणी । अस्तोभयद्वृथासामनु स्वधां गभस्त्योः
This, your follower, O Maruts, sings forth in praise; the voice, like a skilled singer, has praised your power, following your nature with both hands.
आ नो भद्राः क्रतवो यन्तु विश्वतोऽदब्धासो अपरीतास उद्भिदः । देवा नो यथा सदमिद्वृधे असन्नप्रायुवो रक्षितारो दिवेदिवे
May auspicious thoughts come to us from every side, flawless, unimpeded, springing forth; may the gods always be our protectors, granting us growth, day by day, long-lived guardians.
देवानां भद्रा सुमतिरृजूयतां देवानां रातिरभि नो नि वर्तताम् । देवानां सख्यमुप सेदिमा वयं देवा न आयुः प्र तिरन्तु जीवसे
May the good favor of the gods be straight for us; may the generosity of the gods turn toward us; may we approach the friendship of the gods; may the gods grant us life for living.
