अश्मन्वती रीयते सं रभध्वमुत्तिष्ठत प्र तरता सखायः । अत्रा जहाम ये असन्नशेवाः शिवान्वयमुत्तरेमाभि वाजान्
The stony one moves forward—join together, arise, cross over, O friends; here let us leave behind those who were not helpful, and with the auspicious ones let us cross to greater prizes.
त्वष्टा माया वेदपसामपस्तमो बिभ्रत्पात्रा देवपानानि शंतमा । शिशीते नूनं परशुं स्वायसं येन वृश्चादेतशो ब्रह्मणस्पतिः
Tvaṣṭar, knowing the arts and the deepest wisdom, bears vessels for the gods’ drink, most auspicious. He sharpens surely the iron axe, by which Brahmanaspati cleaves the obstacles.
सतो नूनं कवयः सं शिशीत वाशीभिर्याभिरमृताय तक्षथ । विद्वांसः पदा गुह्यानि कर्तन येन देवासो अमृतत्वमानशुः
Indeed, the wise join together with axes, with which you fashioned immortality. Knowing the secret steps, you create, by which the gods attained to deathlessness.
गर्भे योषामदधुर्वत्समासन्यपीच्येन मनसोत जिह्वया । स विश्वाहा सुमना योग्या अभि सिषासनिर्वनते कार इज्जितिम्
They placed the calf within the womb of the cow, with subtle mind and tongue. He, ever benevolent, approaches all fitting things, the singer striving for victory.
तां सु ते कीर्तिं मघवन्महित्वा यत्त्वा भीते रोदसी अह्वयेताम् । प्रावो देवाँ आतिरो दासमोजः प्रजायै त्वस्यै यदशिक्ष इन्द्र
That fame of yours, O Maghavan, in greatness, when the trembling earth and sky called upon you— you led the gods, you surpassed the strength of the Dasa, for the offspring of that one when you aided, O Indra.
यदचरस्तन्वा वावृधानो बलानीन्द्र प्रब्रुवाणो जनेषु । मायेत्सा ते यानि युद्धान्याहुर्नाद्य शत्रुं ननु पुरा विवित्से
When you acted, growing in body and strength, O Indra, declaring your power among people— let not those battles be called your illusions; today, the enemy is not as before, to be tested.
क उ नु ते महिमनः समस्यास्मत्पूर्व ऋषयोऽन्तमापुः । यन्मातरं च पितरं च साकमजनयथास्तन्वः स्वायाः
Who then has reached the limit of your greatness? Which of our forebears, O Indra? When you created both mother and father together, from your own body.
चत्वारि ते असुर्याणि नामादाभ्यानि महिषस्य सन्ति । त्वमङ्ग तानि विश्वानि वित्से येभिः कर्माणि मघवञ्चकर्थ
Four names of your lordship, mighty one, are found in the buffalo. You, indeed, know all these, by which deeds, O Maghavan, you accomplished.
त्वं विश्वा दधिषे केवलानि यान्याविर्या च गुहा वसूनि । काममिन्मे मघवन्मा वि तारीस्त्वमाज्ञाता त्वमिन्द्रासि दाता
You hold all things, visible and hidden treasures. Do not cross my desire, O Maghavan. You are the knower, you are Indra, the giver.
यो अदधाज्ज्योतिषि ज्योतिरन्तर्यो असृजन्मधुना सं मधूनि । अध प्रियं शूषमिन्द्राय मन्म ब्रह्मकृतो बृहदुक्थादवाचि
He who placed light within light, who produced sweetness with honey— then, my dear praise for Indra, my song, made with sacred utterance, I have spoken aloud.
दूरे तन्नाम गुह्यं पराचैर्यत्त्वा भीते अह्वयेतां वयोधै । उदस्तभ्नाः पृथिवीं द्यामभीके भ्रातुः पुत्रान्मघवन्तित्विषाणः
Far away is that hidden name, by which the trembling ones called upon you for strength. You upheld earth and sky with your might, O Maghavan, the sons of your brother, radiant.
महत्तन्नाम गुह्यं पुरुस्पृग्येन भूतं जनयो येन भव्यम् । प्रत्नं जातं ज्योतिर्यदस्य प्रियं प्रियाः समविशन्त पञ्च
Great is that hidden name, with which you, O many-skilled one, made what has been and what will be. The ancient light born of him, beloved, the beloved ones entered together, five in number.
आ रोदसी अपृणादोत मध्यं पञ्च देवाँ ऋतुशः सप्तसप्त । चतुस्त्रिंशता पुरुधा वि चष्टे सरूपेण ज्योतिषा विव्रतेन
He filled both earth and sky, and the middle, five gods in turn, seven by seven. With thirty-four forms, he sees widely, with his own light, shining distinctly.
यदुष औच्छः प्रथमा विभानामजनयो येन पुष्टस्य पुष्टम् । यत्ते जामित्वमवरं परस्या महन्महत्या असुरत्वमेकम्
You first shone forth, producing the first radiances, by which the nourished one is nourished. Your kinship is lower than the highest, your greatness is unique in mighty lordship.
विधुं दद्राणं समने बहूनां युवानं सन्तं पलितो जगार । देवस्य पश्य काव्यं महित्वाद्या ममार स ह्यः समान
The waxing moon, dwelling among many, young yet gray-haired, awakens. Behold the divine poet’s greatness; he died yesterday, yet is born the same.
शाक्मना शाको अरुणः सुपर्ण आ यो महः शूरः सनादनीळः । यच्चिकेत सत्यमित्तन्न मोघं वसु स्पार्हमुत जेतोत दाता
By power, the powerful, the ruddy, the eagle, who is great, heroic, ancient. What he knows is true, not vain; his wealth is splendid, both conqueror and giver.
ऐभिर्ददे वृष्ण्या पौंस्यानि येभिरौक्षद्वृत्रहत्याय वज्री । ये कर्मणः क्रियमाणस्य मह्न ऋतेकर्ममुदजायन्त देवाः
With these, he gave manly powers, with which the wielder of the thunderbolt drenched for the slaying of Vṛtra. Those gods, born from the act performed, arose from the ritual deed.
युजा कर्माणि जनयन्विश्वौजा अशस्तिहा विश्वमनास्तुराषाट् । पीत्वी सोमस्य दिव आ वृधानः शूरो निर्युधाधमद्दस्यून्
With union, he creates deeds, all-powerful, destroyer of evil, all-minded, ruler. Having drunk Soma, growing in heaven, the hero drove out and subdued the enemies.
इदं त एकं पर ऊ त एकं तृतीयेन ज्योतिषा सं विशस्व । संवेशने तन्वश्चारुरेधि प्रियो देवानां परमे जनित्रे
This is yours, one; that is yours, another; with the third light, unite. In gathering, let your bodies rejoice; beloved of the gods, in the highest birthplace.
तनूष्टे वाजिन्तन्वं नयन्ती वाममस्मभ्यं धातु शर्म तुभ्यम् । अह्रुतो महो धरुणाय देवान्दिवीव ज्योतिः स्वमा मिमीयाः
May your vigorous form, leading forth strength, grant us both delight and protection for you. Unharmed, may you create your own radiance for the great support, like light in the sky, O gods.
वाज्यसि वाजिनेना सुवेनीः सुवित स्तोमं सुवितो दिवं गाः । सुवितो धर्म प्रथमानु सत्या सुवितो देवान्सुवितोऽनु पत्म
You are strong with strength; with strength you win splendid prizes. With strength you have gained praise, with strength you have reached the heavens. With strength you have followed the first true laws, with strength you have followed the gods, with strength we follow after you.
महिम्न एषां पितरश्चनेशिरे देवा देवेष्वदधुरपि क्रतुम् । समविव्यचुरुत यान्यत्विषुरैषां तनूषु नि विविशुः पुनः
Even their ancestors could not match their greatness; the gods placed their wisdom among the gods. They distributed all things, and with their power, these entered again into their own forms.
सहोभिर्विश्वं परि चक्रमू रजः पूर्वा धामान्यमिता मिमानाः । तनूषु विश्वा भुवना नि येमिरे प्रासारयन्त पुरुध प्रजा अनु
With their might they circled the entire expanse, measuring out the ancient, boundless abodes. Into their forms all beings entered, spreading forth widely among the many peoples.
द्विधा सूनवोऽसुरं स्वर्विदमास्थापयन्त तृतीयेन कर्मणा । स्वां प्रजां पितरः पित्र्यं सह आवरेष्वदधुस्तन्तुमाततम्
The sons divided the demon who knows the sun in two, establishing him by a third act. The fathers, with their own strength, set their own offspring and the ancestral thread among the later generations.
नावा न क्षोदः प्रदिशः पृथिव्याः स्वस्तिभिरति दुर्गाणि विश्वा । स्वां प्रजां बृहदुक्थो महित्वावरेष्वदधादा परेषु
Like a ship over the sea or the directions of the earth, with blessings he crosses all hardships. With his own offspring, the one of great praise, in his greatness, set them among the later and the earlier ones.
मा प्र गाम पथो वयं मा यज्ञादिन्द्र सोमिनः । मान्त स्थुर्नो अरातयः
Let us not stray from the path, nor from the sacrifice, O Indra, O drinker of Soma. Let not our enemies overcome us.
यो यज्ञस्य प्रसाधनस्तन्तुर्देवेष्वाततः । तमाहुतं नशीमहि
The thread which is the arranger of the sacrifice, stretched among the gods—may we reach that, well-invoked.
मनो न्वा हुवामहे नाराशंसेन सोमेन । पितॄणां च मन्मभिः
Now we call upon the mind, with the favor of Nārāśaṃsa and Soma, and with the thoughts of the ancestors.
आ त एतु मनः पुनः क्रत्वे दक्षाय जीवसे । ज्योक्च सूर्यं दृशे
May that mind return here again, for resolve, for skill, for life, and so that we may see the sun clearly.
पुनर्नः पितरो मनो ददातु दैव्यो जनः । जीवं व्रातं सचेमहि
May our ancestors, the divine race, give us back our mind again, so that we may unite with the living assembly.
