I give to the singer the ancient wealth; I create the prayer that brings increase to me; I am the inspirer of the sacrificer, the witness in every contest.
The gods have called me Indra by name; the creatures of heaven, earth, and waters as well; I have yoked the two swift, strong bays; I have given the thunderbolt to the mighty.
I destroyed Atka for the sage with my might; I aided Kutsa with my powers; I am the smiter of Śuṣṇa, the restrainer of Vadhryaśva, who did not give the Aryan name to the Dasyu.
Like a father for his son, I aided Vetasu for his wish; I subdued Tugra for Kutsa and Smadibha; I am the inspirer of the sacrificer, the king, when I win the contest for the one who does not withhold the beloved.
I subdued Mṛgaya for Śrutarvan, when he sought my aid with his skill; I made the humble Vesha bow; I subdued Paḍgṛbhi for Savyā.
I am he who, like the slayer of Vṛtra, destroyed the Dāsa named Navavāstva and Bṛhadratha; who, when one sought to exalt and spread himself among men, cast him far off, beyond the shining expanse of the sky.
I move around the sun with swift horses, carried onward with force by the impelling ones; when the pressing stone, urged by men, calls to me, I bring down the Dāsa to be struck and subdued.
I am the sevenfold Nahusha, most powerful among the Nahushas; with might I made Turvasha and Yadu proclaim my greatness; with force I subdued another, the mighty one, and I overcame ninety-nine of the arrogant.
I, the bull, held back the seven flowing streams upon the earth, upon their courses; I, wise in action, cross over the waters, and with knowledge I seek the path for Manu's descendants.
I supported those streams at that time, when not even the god Tvaṣṭṛ could uphold them; the precious milk of cows, hidden in their udders, the sweet honey, the Soma pressed and pure.
Thus, O gods, Indra, the bountiful, true in his gifts, has excelled among men by his heroic deeds; all these, O Harivaḥ, full of power, praise your glory with their own strength.
To the mighty one who delights in the offering, to Viśvānarā, the all-encompassing, raise your song; to Indra, whose great strength and fame, whose heroic power, are honored by earth and heaven.
He alone, praised by noble friendship, is Indra, the helper of men; in all tasks, in all contests for prize, in all battles, O strong one, you, the hero, are delighted.
Who are those men, O Indra, who seek your favor, who desire your benevolence and prosperity? Who strive for your strength, for lordship, who seek you in the waters, in the best of riches, in manly vigor?
You, Indra, are great through prayer; you are worthy of worship in all sacrifices; among all gatherings you are the foremost, and your counsel is supreme among all peoples.
Now let the greater, the sacrificers, protect us; the peoples know your vast measure; this one, ageless, ever-growing, all these libations I have prepared for you.
All these libations I have prepared for you, O son of strength, which you yourself have accepted; for your favor, the vessel is set, the rite is established, the hymn, the prayer, the exalted speech.
Those priests, O wise one, who have composed hymns for you at the pressing, and for the giving of wealth, with minds set on your favor, follow the path to the joy of the pressed Soma.
That great, ancient embryo was there, by which you entered the waters; you, O Agni, Jātavedas, alone among the gods, saw all forms of your own body in many ways.
Who has seen me, which god is he, who has beheld my forms in many ways? Where do Mitra and Varuṇa dwell, where are all the kindling fires of Agni, the divine?
We have seen you, Jātavedas, in many forms, O Agni, entering the waters and the plants; Yama, of wondrous radiance, recognized you, shining forth beyond the ten regions.
Fearing Varuṇa, I withdrew from the priesthood; the gods did not unite me there; my forms are established in many places, but I, Agni, did not understand this purpose.
Come, O Manu, desiring the sacrifice, lead the godly one, Agni, from the darkness by the right path; make the ways easy for the gods, bring the offerings with a kindly mind.
The earlier brothers of Agni pursued this purpose, like charioteers following the path; therefore, out of fear, O Varuṇa, I have come far away, like a pale one who is not the swiftest among those who are not victorious.
We make your life ageless, O Agni, so that, harnessed, O Knower of all births, you do not perish; then, being well-disposed, you carry the portion of the offering well-born for the gods.
Grant me the portions of the offerings, both the preliminary and concluding, full of strength; let there be ghee, the essence of waters, the essence of plants, and, O Agni, may the gods grant you long life.
May your preliminary and concluding offerings, O Agni, be portions of the oblation, full of strength; may this entire sacrifice be yours, and may all four directions bow to you.
All the gods, instruct me here, as the chosen Hotar sits for the rite; tell me my rightful share, so that by the path you approve, I may carry your oblation.
I, the Hotar, have taken my seat for the sacrifice; all the gods and Maruts support me; day by day, O Aśvins, your priest becomes the offerer, and the offering is made to you.
This Hotar, whoever he is, is brought to Yama; whatever the gods approve, he ponders; day by day he is born, month by month, as the gods have established the carrier of the oblation.
