The frog has awakened, eats facing backward, with its head it places a shield. Sitting upright, it dries itself, lying flat it follows the ground.
The one with broad shade, without leaves, stands nearby; the mother, pierced, eats the embryo. Another, the cow, measures the calf, and by what means did the pregnant cow place it within herself?
Seven heroes rose from below, lost from the north, they came together at the end. Nine from the west, standing, arrived; ten from the east, they traverse the ridges, eating.
Of ten, one is tawny and common; they urge him for the ritual and for the crossing. The mother carries the well-nourished embryo in her breasts, delighting in him, she bears him, content.
The heroes cooked the fat ram; the dice were cast, they sat down to play. Two great bows, with purification, move about, cleansing as they go.
The shouters have gone forth, moving everywhere; the cook is not here, nor is half the wing. This god Savitar has spoken thus: 'Let the running one, the butter-eater, go forth.'
I saw a village being carried away from afar, moving by its own law, rolling on wheels. The Arya sharpens the yoke for the people, suddenly, the young ones, measuring with their phallus, are renewed.
These two cows are yoked for my delight; do not hinder them, let them refresh me again and again. Even the waters of this one are lost for a purpose; the sun and the monkey have become superior.
This thunderbolt, widely spread, has come down from the great dung of the sun. By this, fame is gained; there is something else beyond. By this, the aged cross over without trembling.
From tree to tree, the cow measures; then the young ones fly forth, devouring men. Thus, let all this world be afraid; offer to Indra and learn from the seer.
In the measure of the gods, the first ones stood; the cutters rose above them. Three heat the earth and the marshes; two carry the dung in their mouths.
That one is your life-giver; know him as such. Do not, in battle, hide yourself from one like him. He makes the sun visible, he conceals the darkness; he, revealed, is not released from the bonds of the unliberated.
Indeed, every other enemy has departed; my father-in-law, however, has not gone. Let him eat food, let him drink soma; having eaten his fill, let him return again to his home.
That roaring bull, with sharp horns, stands in the rain, marking out the path of the earth. Among all gatherings, may I protect him who fills my belly with the pressed soma.
With the stone, they press your exhilarating soma, O Indra; you drink of these. The bulls cook for you, you eat of theirs, when, O bountiful one, you are invoked with the ladle.
May this, O singer, be well known to me: the rivers carry the curse that flows against the current. The wolves turn back from the lion, the fish from the crocodile, the jackal from the boar, scorched from the hollow.
How indeed have I come to know this, the ripened wisdom of Gritsa, the inspired one? You, knowing, speak to us in due season, O bountiful one, what share you would have us keep for you.
Thus, indeed, they increase my strength, even those who are above in the vast sky. I lay down many thousands together; for my begetter has begotten me unconquered.
Thus, indeed, the gods have made me mighty, O Indra, strong in deed, ever manly. I slew Vritra with the thunderbolt, delighting, and with my might I opened the pen for the worshipper.
The gods came bearing axes, cutting the forest, approaching with their weapons. They placed the well-fixed one in their breasts, where, following the wedge, they burn it.
The hare whetted the razor, turning it back; with his paw he split the stone from afar. Even the great one, wounded, I pierce with holes, like a calf licking the bull.
Thus the eagle sharpened his claw, restrained like a lion at the track. Even the buffalo, though restrained, desires to run; the iguana, therefore, drags this away.
From them, the iguana drags this away—those who, opposing the sacred word, feed on food. Even the calves, released from the ox, bite, their bodies growing strong of themselves.
These, with the branches of the shami tree, have become well-shaded; others have adorned their bodies with soma hymns. Speaking like men, come to us with strength; in heaven, O hero, you have established your fame and name.
Like a tree in the forest, whoever is set down, your praise, bright and eager, has grown. For whom Indra is the priest among men, the noble, the most manly, the lord of the night.
May we reach the farthest dawn for you; may we be in the dance of the most manly among men. Following Trishoka, bringing a hundred men, whose chariot, with Kutsa, was victorious.
What exhilaration of yours, O Indra, is delightful? Fierce one, run to our songs from afar. Which helper, coming near, may my thought bring, so that I may attain your highest favor with food?
What glory, O Indra, do you bestow upon men, by what wisdom do you act, who comes to you? Like Mitra, true in service, you are widely praised, when our thoughts are united in food.
Send forth the sun, as one seeking the farthest goal, for those who, like offspring, pursue his desire. And those many songs of yours, O Indra, the men, born of your strength, answer with food.
O Indra, for your mother, for you, for Sumitra, may the ancient heaven with its might and the earth with her wisdom be present. For your delight, may the clarified offerings and sweet draughts be ready for you to drink.
