Go far away, O Death, along your own path, which is separate from the path of the gods. I speak to you who have sight and hearing: do not harm our offspring or our men.
Those who approach the realm of death, going there, may they establish a longer life-span. Increasing in offspring and wealth, purified and cleansed, may you become worthy of sacrifice.
These living ones have turned away from the dead; may our invocation to the gods today be auspicious. Let us go forward to dance and rejoice, establishing a longer life-span.
I set this boundary for the living; let not any of them cross over to this place. May they live a hundred autumns, may they flourish, and may they keep death at a mountain's distance.
As the days follow one another in order, as the seasons proceed with their appointed times, so may the later not abandon the earlier; O Creator, arrange their lifespans accordingly.
Rise up, choosing vigor and old age; strive onward in due order and stand firm. Here, may Tvaṣṭṛ, together with good birth, grant you long life for your living.
Let these women, not widowed, good wives, enter with unguent and clarified butter. Without tears, free from sickness, rich in offspring, let them ascend first to the womb of creation.
Rise, woman, to the world of the living; come to this place where life remains. You have become the wife of the one who grasped your hand; you have now joined with your husband in motherhood.
Taking the bow from the hand of the dead, for our own strength, power, and might, here may you remain, and we too, with good sons, may we conquer all hostile challenges.
Draw near to your mother, this earth, broad and gracious, the well-yielding, kindly earth. Like a gentle, youthful woman, may she protect you and keep you from the approach of destruction.
Rise up, O earth, do not press down on him; be easy to approach, be easy to part. As a mother covers her child, so cover him, O earth.
Rising up, let the earth stand firm and well-settled; let a thousand measures rest upon her. May her houses, flowing with ghee, be all shelters for him here.
I set up the earth for you, I lay down this log for your dwelling. May the ancestors uphold this pillar; here, may Yama assign you a seat.
They have placed me facing west, like a leaf; I have taken up the western speech, as one takes a horse by the rein.
Turn back, do not go away from us; remain here, shining ones. Agni and Soma, O returning ones, grant us wealth.
Turn him back again, settle him again here. Let Indra restrain him, let Agni bring him back.
Let these return again, let them thrive under our protection. Here, O Agni, may the wealth remain; let it stay here.
Whatever is departure, return, recognition, or going forth, I call upon the guardian who brings back and restores.
Whoever departs or goes forth, whoever returns or comes back, may the guardian turn them back again.
Return, bring him back again; grant him to us once more, O Indra. Let us enjoy with the living.
Distribute for you everywhere strength, ghee, and milk. May all the gods, whoever are worthy of sacrifice, unite us with wealth.
Turn back, make to return; turn back, make to return. From the four directions of the earth, bring him back by this means.
May you inspire our mind towards what is auspicious.
I praise Agni, the youngest of the strong, the ruler, the friend, difficult to restrain, whose law the singers honor, as children honor their mother.
Whom the women, with their devotion, nurture—the radiant one, marked by light, shines forth, adorned in his array.
The noble one goes as the leader of the peoples, when he stretches to the ends of heaven; the sage shines, flashing without a cloud.
May he accept the offerings of men, standing upright, mighty in the sacrifice, measuring the dwelling, he comes forward.
For he is the secure one, the oblation-sacrifice, the hearer, who goes as the leader; the gods have made Agni, the possessor of riches.
With the desire for sacrifice, I seek Agni, the ancient, the gracious one; they call him the son of the stone, the bringer of life.
All the men, whoever they are among us, or all who may be, increasing Agni with offering—may they be blessed.
