आहं पितॄन्सुविदत्राँ अवित्सि नपातं च विक्रमणं च विष्णोः । बर्हिषदो ये स्वधया सुतस्य भजन्त पित्वस्त इहागमिष्ठाः
I have called upon the forefathers, the bestowers of blessings, and the offspring and strides of Vishnu; those who sit on the sacred grass, who partake of the pressed Soma by their own power—may these ancestors come here to this offering.
बर्हिषदः पितर ऊत्यर्वागिमा वो हव्या चकृमा जुषध्वम् । त आ गतावसा शंतमेनाथा नः शं योररपो दधात
O ancestors seated on the sacred grass, come near; we have prepared these offerings for you—accept them. Come with help and with peace; and bestow upon us that blessing which is free from harm.
उपहूताः पितरः सोम्यासो बर्हिष्येषु निधिषु प्रियेषु । त आ गमन्तु त इह श्रुवन्त्वधि ब्रुवन्तु तेऽवन्त्वस्मान्
Summoned ancestors, delighting in Soma, who dwell in the beloved seats upon the sacred grass—may they come here, may they listen here, may they speak here, and may they protect us.
आच्या जानु दक्षिणतो निषद्येमं यज्ञमभि गृणीत विश्वे । मा हिंसिष्ट पितरः केन चिन्नो यद्व आगः पुरुषता कराम
Sitting to the south, bending the right knee, all you ancestors, accept this sacrifice; do not harm us in any way, O ancestors, for whatever human error we may have committed.
आसीनासो अरुणीनामुपस्थे रयिं धत्त दाशुषे मर्त्याय । पुत्रेभ्यः पितरस्तस्य वस्वः प्र यच्छत त इहोर्जं दधात
Seated in the lap of the dawns, grant wealth to the worshipper, O ancestors; give to his sons that treasure, and here bestow strength.
ये नः पूर्वे पितरः सोम्यासोऽनूहिरे सोमपीथं वसिष्ठाः । तेभिर्यमः संरराणो हवींष्युशन्नुशद्भिः प्रतिकाममत्तु
Those ancestors of ours, delighting in Soma, who first approached the Soma feast, the Vasiṣṭhas—may Yama, rejoicing with them, accept the offerings, and may they, well-seated, partake according to their wish.
ये तातृषुर्देवत्रा जेहमाना होत्राविद स्तोमतष्टासो अर्कैः । आग्ने याहि सुविदत्रेभिरर्वाङ्सत्यैः कव्यैः पितृभिर्घर्मसद्भिः
Those who thirsted among the gods, striving, skilled in the rites, singers of hymns—Agni, bring them here, the bestowers of blessings, the true ancestors, the seers who sit at the offering.
ये सत्यासो हविरदो हविष्पा इन्द्रेण देवैः सरथं दधानाः । आग्ने याहि सहस्रं देववन्दैः परैः पूर्वैः पितृभिर्घर्मसद्भिः
Those true ones who receive the offerings, who drink the oblation, who share the chariot with Indra and the gods—Agni, bring here by thousands those ancestors, praised by the gods, who sit at the offering, both distant and former.
अग्निष्वात्ताः पितर एह गच्छत सदःसदः सदत सुप्रणीतयः । अत्ता हवींषि प्रयतानि बर्हिष्यथा रयिं सर्ववीरं दधातन
O ancestors who have been consumed by Agni, come here, sit in every seat, sit well-guided; eat the offerings made with devotion on the sacred grass, and bestow all-heroic wealth.
त्वमग्न ईळितो जातवेदोऽवाड्ढव्यानि सुरभीणि कृत्वी । प्रादाः पितृभ्यः स्वधया ते अक्षन्नद्धि त्वं देव प्रयता हवींषि
You, Agni, invoked, knower of all births, have brought the fragrant offerings; you have presented them to the ancestors, who have eaten by their own power. Indeed, you, god, accept the offerings made with devotion.
ये चेह पितरो ये च नेह याँश्च विद्म याँ उ च न प्रविद्म । त्वं वेत्थ यति ते जातवेदः स्वधाभिर्यज्ञं सुकृतं जुषस्व
Whether the ancestors are here or not here, those whom we know or do not know—you, knower of all births, know their paths. With offerings, accept this well-made sacrifice.
ये अग्निदग्धा ये अनग्निदग्धा मध्ये दिवः स्वधया मादयन्ते । तेभिः स्वराळसुनीतिमेतां यथावशं तन्वं कल्पयस्व
Those who have been burned by fire and those not burned by fire, who rejoice in the midst of heaven by their own power—with them, lead us to the world of the righteous, and shape this body as is fitting.
मैनमग्ने वि दहो माभि शोचो मास्य त्वचं चिक्षिपो मा शरीरम् । यदा शृतं कृणवो जातवेदोऽथेमेनं प्र हिणुतात्पितृभ्यः
Do not consume him entirely, O Agni; do not scorch him, do not burn his skin or his body. When you have cooked him, O knower of all births, then send him forth to the ancestors.
शृतं यदा करसि जातवेदोऽथेमेनं परि दत्तात्पितृभ्यः । यदा गच्छात्यसुनीतिमेतामथा देवानां वशनीर्भवाति
When you have cooked him, O knower of all births, then wrap him up and deliver him to the ancestors. When he goes to that world of the righteous, then he becomes subject to the will of the gods.
सूर्यं चक्षुर्गच्छतु वातमात्मा द्यां च गच्छ पृथिवीं च धर्मणा । अपो वा गच्छ यदि तत्र ते हितमोषधीषु प्रति तिष्ठा शरीरैः
May his eye go to the sun, his breath to the wind; go to heaven and earth by the proper path. Go to the waters, if that is your place; abide with the plants with your limbs.
अजो भागस्तपसा तं तपस्व तं ते शोचिस्तपतु तं ते अर्चिः । यास्ते शिवास्तन्वो जातवेदस्ताभिर्वहैनं सुकृतामु लोकम्
Let the unborn portion be purified by austerity; let your flame, your heat, purify him. With your auspicious forms, O knower of all births, carry him to the world of the righteous.
अव सृज पुनरग्ने पितृभ्यो यस्त आहुतश्चरति स्वधाभिः । आयुर्वसान उप वेतु शेषः सं गच्छतां तन्वा जातवेदः
Release him again, O Agni, to the ancestors, the one who has been offered and moves with the oblation; let the remaining life approach and stay, O knower of all births, let the body unite again.
यत्ते कृष्णः शकुन आतुतोद पिपीलः सर्प उत वा श्वापदः । अग्निष्टद्विश्वादगदं कृणोतु सोमश्च यो ब्राह्मणाँ आविवेश
Whatever black bird, ant, serpent, or beast of prey may have injured you—may Agni make all that harmless, and Soma too, if any Brahmin has entered you.
अग्नेर्वर्म परि गोभिर्व्ययस्व सं प्रोर्णुष्व पीवसा मेदसा च । नेत्त्वा धृष्णुर्हरसा जर्हृषाणो दधृग्विधक्ष्यन्पर्यङ्खयाते
Clothe yourself with the armor of Agni, surrounded by cows; envelop yourself with richness and fat. Having led you forth, O powerful one, with force and delight, may you hold firm those who are to be burned, lying around you.
इमम् अग्ने चमसम् मा वि जिह्वरः प्रियो देवानाम् उत सोम्यानाम् । एष यश् चमसो देवपानस् तस्मिन् देवा अमृता मादयन्ते
O Agni, do not consume this vessel; it is dear to the gods and to those who partake of Soma. This vessel is for the gods to drink; in it, the immortal gods rejoice.
क्रव्यादम् अग्निम् प्र हिणोमि दूरꣳ यमराज्ञो गच्छतु रिप्रवाहः । इहैवायम् इतरो जातवेदा देवेभ्यो हव्यꣳ वहतु प्रजानन्
I send far away the flesh-eating Agni; let the stream of Yama's kingly realm go forth. Let this other Jātavedas remain here, knowing, to carry the offering to the gods.
यो अग्निः क्रव्यात् प्रविवेश वो गृहम् इमम् पश्यन्न् इतरꣳ जातवेदसम् । तꣳ हरामि पितृयज्ञाय देवꣳ स घर्मम् इन्वात् परमे सधस्थे
The Agni who has entered your house as the consumer of flesh, seeing this one and the other Jātavedas—him I carry forth for the ancestral offering, that god, with the hot libation, to the highest abode.
यो अग्निः क्रव्यवाहनः पितॄन् यक्षद् ऋतावृधः । प्रेद् उ हव्यानि वोचति देवेभ्यश् च पितृभ्य आ
The Agni who carries the flesh, who enjoys the ancestors, who grows by the rite—he indeed proclaims the offerings to the gods and to the fathers.
उशन्तस् त्वा नि धीमह्य् उशन्तः सम् इधीमहि । उशन्न् उशत आ वह पितॄन् हविषे अत्तवे
With brightness we set you down, with brightness we kindle you; O bright one, bring the fathers here to this offering, together with the bright ones.
यꣳ त्वम् अग्ने समदहस् तम् उ निर् वापया पुनः । कियाम्ब्व् अत्र रोहतु पाकदूर्वा व्यल्कशा
Whomever you, O Agni, have burned up together, extinguish him again; let him rise here with his body, with flesh and skin, to the world of water.
शीतिके शीतिकावति ह्लादिके ह्लादिकावति । मण्डूक्या३ सु सꣳ गम इमꣳ स्व् अ१ग्निꣳ हर्षय
O cool one, in the coolness; O refreshing one, in the refreshment; with the frog, let there be good union. Gladden this Agni for us.
त्वष्टा दुहित्रे वहतुं कृणोतीतीदं विश्वं भुवनं समेति । यमस्य माता पर्युह्यमाना महो जाया विवस्वतो ननाश
Tvaṣṭṛ makes a husband for his daughter; thus all this world comes together. The mother of Yama, being embraced, vanished as the great wife of Vivasvat.
अपागूहन्नमृतां मर्त्येभ्यः कृत्वी सवर्णामददुर्विवस्वते । उताश्विनावभरद्यत्तदासीदजहादु द्वा मिथुना सरण्यूः
The immortals removed her from mortals, making another of like form and gave her to Vivasvat. Then the Aśvins carried away what was left; Saraṇyū abandoned the two twins.
पूषा त्वेतश्च्यावयतु प्र विद्वाननष्टपशुर्भुवनस्य गोपाः । स त्वैतेभ्यः परि ददत्पितृभ्योऽग्निर्देवेभ्यः सुविदत्रियेभ्यः
May Pūṣan, the knower, drive away this one here, the guardian of beings who never loses cattle. He gives you over to these Fathers, and Agni to the gods who bestow good gifts.
आयुर्विश्वायुः परि पासति त्वा पूषा त्वा पातु प्रपथे पुरस्तात् । यत्रासते सुकृतो यत्र ते ययुस्तत्र त्वा देवः सविता दधातु
May Pūṣan, the all-life, guard your life; may he protect you on the path ahead. Where the righteous dwell, where your ancestors have gone, there may the god Savitṛ place you.
