ईशाना वार्याणां क्षयन्तीश्चर्षणीनाम् । अपो याचामि भेषजम्
Mistresses of treasures, sustaining peoples, O waters, I ask for your healing remedy.
अप्सु मे सोमो अब्रवीदन्तर्विश्वानि भेषजा । अग्निं च विश्वशम्भुवम्
In the waters, Soma spoke to me: within them are all remedies, and Agni, the bringer of all blessings.
आपः पृणीत भेषजं वरूथं तन्वे मम । ज्योक्च सूर्यं दृशे
O waters, fill me with healing, protection for my body, and let me see the sun for a long time.
इदमापः प्र वहत यत्किं च दुरितं मयि । यद्वाहमभिदुद्रोह यद्वा शेप उतानृतम्
O waters, carry away from me whatever evil is in me, whatever wrong I have done, or falsehood, or curse.
आपो अद्यान्वचारिषं रसेन समगस्महि । पयस्वानग्न आ गहि तं मा सं सृज वर्चसा
O waters, today I have come among you; we have mingled with your essence. Come, Agni, full of milk; grant me radiance, do not take it away.
ओ चित्सखायं सख्या ववृत्यां तिरः पुरू चिदर्णवं जगन्वान् । पितुर्नपातमा दधीत वेधा अधि क्षमि प्रतरं दीध्यानः
Let me choose friendship with a companion, crossing even a vast sea. May the wise one place the grandson of the father here, shining, on the earth as a bridge.
न ते सखा सख्यं वष्ट्येतत्सलक्ष्मा यद्विषुरूपा भवाति । महस्पुत्रासो असुरस्य वीरा दिवो धर्तार उर्विया परि ख्यन्
No friend desires such friendship with you, marked as it is, when one becomes of differing forms. Sons of the great, heroes of the Asura, sustainers of the vast expanse, they are renowned throughout the wide world.
उशन्ति घा ते अमृतास एतदेकस्य चित्त्यजसं मर्त्यस्य । नि ते मनो मनसि धाय्यस्मे जन्युः पतिस्तन्वमा विविश्याः
Indeed, the immortals praise this of you, even regarding a single mortal born on earth. May your mind not be set upon us; may you not, desiring, enter into our bodies.
न यत्पुरा चकृमा कद्ध नूनमृता वदन्तो अनृतं रपेम । गन्धर्वो अप्स्वप्या च योषा सा नो नाभिः परमं जामि तन्नौ
What we did before, let us not do now; let us not, speaking untruth, commit falsehood, O immortals. The Gandharva is in the waters, and the maiden as well; she is our navel, the highest kinship for us.
गर्भे नु नौ जनिता दम्पती कर्देवस्त्वष्टा सविता विश्वरूपः । नकिरस्य प्र मिनन्ति व्रतानि वेद नावस्य पृथिवी उत द्यौः
In the womb, our creator made us a couple—Kardama, Tvaṣṭṛ, Savitṛ of manifold forms. None transgresses his ordinances; both earth and heaven know the vessel of his wisdom.
को अस्य वेद प्रथमस्याह्नः क ईं ददर्श क इह प्र वोचत् । बृहन्मित्रस्य वरुणस्य धाम कदु ब्रव आहनो वीच्या नॄन्
Who knows of his first day? Who has seen it? Who here can declare it? The great ordinance of Mitra and Varuṇa—how shall I speak of it to the people?
यमस्य मा यम्यं काम आगन्समाने योनौ सहशेय्याय । जायेव पत्ये तन्वं रिरिच्यां वि चिद्वृहेव रथ्येव चक्रा
Desire came to Yama's sister for Yama, to lie together in the same womb. Like a wife stretching herself to her husband, she would divide her body, like a chariot's wheel from its axle.
न तिष्ठन्ति न नि मिषन्त्येते देवानां स्पश इह ये चरन्ति । अन्येन मदाहनो याहि तूयं तेन वि वृह रथ्येव चक्रा
These here neither stand nor do they sit; they are the spies of the gods who move about here. Go with another who delights you; separate yourself from me, as a chariot's wheel from its axle.
रात्रीभिरस्मा अहभिर्दशस्येत्सूर्यस्य चक्षुर्मुहुरुन्मिमीयात् । दिवा पृथिव्या मिथुना सबन्धू यमीर्यमस्य बिभृयादजामि
May night and day bring him favor; may the eye of the sun rise again and again. By day and by earth, the twin siblings, Yami and Yama, should bear their kinship without transgression.
आ घा ता गच्छानुत्तरा युगानि यत्र जामयः कृणवन्नजामि । उप बर्बृहि वृषभाय बाहुमन्यमिच्छस्व सुभगे पतिं मत्
Indeed, those ages have passed where siblings acted thus. Embrace the arm of a strong man; seek a husband, O fortunate one, as your mind desires.
किं भ्रातासद्यदनाथं भवाति किमु स्वसा यन्निरृतिर्निगच्छात् । काममूता बह्वेतद्रपामि तन्वा मे तन्वं सं पिपृग्धि
What if a brother is left without support? What if a sister falls into misfortune? I would fulfill this desire, though it be reproached; unite your body with mine.
न वा उ ते तन्वा तन्वं सं पपृच्यां पापमाहुर्यः स्वसारं निगच्छात् । अन्येन मत्प्रमुदः कल्पयस्व न ते भ्राता सुभगे वष्ट्येतत्
One should not unite body with body in this way; they call it sin when one approaches a sister. Find delight with another who pleases you; your brother, O fortunate one, does not desire this.
बतो बतासि यम नैव ते मनो हृदयं चाविदाम । अन्या किल त्वां कक्ष्येव युक्तं परि ष्वजाते लिबुजेव वृक्षम्
Alas, Yama, truly we do not know your mind or your heart. Another, like a co-wife, has embraced you, as a vine embraces a tree.
अन्यमू षु त्वं यम्यन्य उ त्वां परि ष्वजाते लिबुजेव वृक्षम् । तस्य वा त्वं मन इच्छा स वा तवाधा कृणुष्व संविदं सुभद्राम्
Let another, O Yami, embrace you as a vine embraces a tree. Let your mind desire him, and let him desire you; make a good understanding with him.
वृषा वृष्णे दुदुहे दोहसा दिवः पयांसि यह्वो अदितेरदाभ्यः । विश्वं स वेद वरुणो यथा धिया स यज्ञियो यजतु यज्ञियाँ ऋतून्
The bull has milked for the mighty one the streams of heaven by his power, the unassailable son of Aditi. Varuṇa knows all by his wisdom; let the worshipful one worship the proper seasons.
रपद्गन्धर्वीरप्या च योषणा नदस्य नादे परि पातु मे मनः । इष्टस्य मध्ये अदितिर्नि धातु नो भ्राता नो ज्येष्ठः प्रथमो वि वोचति
May the Gandharva and the maiden in the waters protect my mind from the sound of the river. In the midst of the desired, may Aditi establish us; may our elder brother, the first, declare for us.
सो चिन्नु भद्रा क्षुमती यशस्वत्युषा उवास मनवे स्वर्वती । यदीमुशन्तमुशतामनु क्रतुमग्निं होतारं विदथाय जीजनन्
Even she, the fortunate, rich in cattle and fame, Ushas, has shone for Manu, full of light. When she, following the will of the shining ones, gave birth to Agni, the Hotar, for the assembly.
अध त्यं द्रप्सं विभ्वं विचक्षणं विराभरदिषितः श्येनो अध्वरे । यदी विशो वृणते दस्ममार्या अग्निं होतारमध धीरजायत
Then the falcon, swift and far-seeing, brought the brilliant drop, inspired by the mighty, to the sacrifice. When the noble people choose Agni, the Hotar, the wise is born at the sacrifice.
सदासि रण्वो यवसेव पुष्यते होत्राभिरग्ने मनुषः स्वध्वरः । विप्रस्य वा यच्छशमान उक्थ्यं वाजं ससवाँ उपयासि भूरिभिः
You are always delightful, Agni, like a field thriving with barley, honored by the offerings of men. Whatever praise the inspired one seeks, you bring abundant strength with many gifts.
उदीरय पितरा जार आ भगमियक्षति हर्यतो हृत्त इष्यति । विवक्ति वह्निः स्वपस्यते मखस्तविष्यते असुरो वेपते मती
Raise up, O fathers, the lover comes to the share; the eager one seeks the heart's desire. The fire divides, the wise one observes the sacrifice; the mighty one is praised, the spirit trembles at the thought.
यस्ते अग्ने सुमतिं मर्तो अक्षत्सहसः सूनो अति स प्र शृण्वे । इषं दधानो वहमानो अश्वैरा स द्युमाँ अमवान्भूषति द्यून्
O Agni, when a mortal has won your good favor, O son of strength, he is heard beyond others. Bearing offerings, drawn by horses, he becomes radiant and powerful, adorning the days.
यदग्न एषा समितिर्भवाति देवी देवेषु यजता यजत्र । रत्ना च यद्विभजासि स्वधावो भागं नो अत्र वसुमन्तं वीतात्
When this assembly, O Agni, becomes divine among the gods, worshipful and worthy of sacrifice, and when you, self-sustaining, distribute treasures, grant us here a share full of wealth.
श्रुधी नो अग्ने सदने सधस्थे युक्ष्वा रथममृतस्य द्रवित्नुम् । आ नो वह रोदसी देवपुत्रे माकिर्देवानामप भूरिह स्याः
Hear us, Agni, in your dwelling and assembly; yoke the swift chariot of immortality. Bring to us the two worlds, children of the gods; let us not be far from the gods here.
द्यावा ह क्षामा प्रथमे ऋतेनाभिश्रावे भवतः सत्यवाचा । देवो यन्मर्तान्यजथाय कृण्वन्सीदद्धोता प्रत्यङ्स्वमसुं यन्
Heaven and earth, in the beginning, by truth became renowned, speaking words of truth. When the god, making mortals for worship, sat as the priest, he turned his spirit inward.
देवो देवान्परिभूरृतेन वहा नो हव्यं प्रथमश्चिकित्वान् । धूमकेतुः समिधा भाऋजीको मन्द्रो होता नित्यो वाचा यजीयान्
The god, surpassing the gods by truth, the first and wise, may he carry our offering. The smoke-bannered, shining with kindling, sweet, the eternal priest, most worthy in speech.
