निरिन्द्र भूम्या अधि वृत्रं जघन्थ निर्दिवः । सृजा मरुत्वतीरव जीवधन्या इमा अपोऽर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
O Indra, on earth you struck down Vritra, and from the sky as well; release the Maruts, let these waters, full of life, flow forth, and attain the sovereignty of the sun.
इन्द्रो वृत्रस्य दोधतः सानुं वज्रेण हीळितः । अभिक्रम्याव जिघ्नतेऽपः सर्माय चोदयन्नर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
Indra, with the bolt, struck the summit of Vritra who resisted; advancing, he slays, urging the waters for shelter, and attains the sovereignty of the sun.
अधि सानौ नि जिघ्नते वज्रेण शतपर्वणा । मन्दान इन्द्रो अन्धसः सखिभ्यो गातुमिच्छत्यर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
Upon the summit he strikes down with the hundred-edged thunderbolt; Indra, delighted by the Soma, seeks the path for his companions, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
इन्द्र तुभ्यमिदद्रिवोऽनुत्तं वज्रिन्वीर्यम् । यद्ध त्यं मायिनं मृगं तमु त्वं माययावधीरर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
O Indra, for you, O crusher, is this unsurpassed heroic power, O wielder of the thunderbolt; when you slew that cunning beast by your own cunning, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
वि ते वज्रासो अस्थिरन्नवतिं नाव्या अनु । महत्त इन्द्र वीर्यं बाह्वोस्ते बलं हितमर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
Your thunderbolts have scattered the ships upon the waters; great indeed is your heroic power, O Indra, and the strength set in your arms, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
सहस्रं साकमर्चत परि ष्टोभत विंशतिः । शतैनमन्वनोनवुरिन्द्राय ब्रह्मोद्यतमर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
A thousand together, praise; let twenty resound; with hundreds let them follow on, raising the hymn for Indra, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
इन्द्रो वृत्रस्य तविषीं निरहन्सहसा सहः । महत्तदस्य पौंस्यं वृत्रं जघन्वाँ असृजदर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
Indra struck down the might of Vṛtra with overwhelming force; this is his great manliness—he slew Vṛtra and released the waters, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
इमे चित्तव मन्यवे वेपेते भियसा मही । यदिन्द्र वज्रिन्नोजसा वृत्रं मरुत्वाँ अवधीरर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
Even these two great earths trembled in fear at your wrath, O Indra, O wielder of the thunderbolt, when with your strength, accompanied by the Maruts, you slew Vṛtra, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
न वेपसा न तन्यतेन्द्रं वृत्रो वि बीभयत् । अभ्येनं वज्र आयसः सहस्रभृष्टिरायतार्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
Neither by trembling nor by thunder did Vṛtra greatly fear Indra; against him the iron thunderbolt with a thousand spikes was aimed, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
यद्वृत्रं तव चाशनिं वज्रेण समयोधयः । अहिमिन्द्र जिघांसतो दिवि ते बद्बधे शवोऽर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
When you, with your thunderbolt, struck Vṛtra and his weapon, O Indra, desiring to slay the serpent, your might was held fast in the sky, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
अभिष्टने ते अद्रिवो यत्स्था जगच्च रेजते । त्वष्टा चित्तव मन्यव इन्द्र वेविज्यते भियार्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
At your onslaught, O crusher, when you stand, the moving and the stationary tremble; even Tvaṣṭṛ, in his wrath, O Indra, is shaken with fear, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
नहि नु यादधीमसीन्द्रं को वीर्या परः । तस्मिन्नृम्णमुत क्रतुं देवा ओजांसि सं दधुरर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
Indeed, who could match Indra in heroic deeds? In him the gods placed their power, their wisdom, and their strength, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
यामथर्वा मनुष्पिता दध्यङ्धियमत्नत । तस्मिन्ब्रह्माणि पूर्वथेन्द्र उक्था समग्मतार्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
What Dadhyañc, son of Atharvan, and Manu's father, set forth in wisdom—upon that, O Indra, the ancient hymns and praises were composed, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
इन्द्रो मदाय वावृधे शवसे वृत्रहा नृभिः । तमिन्महत्स्वाजिषूतेमर्भे हवामहे स वाजेषु प्र नोऽविषत्
Indra grew strong with exhilaration, mighty, slayer of Vṛtra, among men; to him, great in battles, even from childhood, we call—may he bring us success in contests.
असि हि वीर सेन्योऽसि भूरि पराददिः । असि दभ्रस्य चिद्वृधो यजमानाय शिक्षसि सुन्वते भूरि ते वसु
For you are a hero, fit for armies; you give abundantly; you are generous even to the humble, and you grant to the worshipper—much wealth is yours to bestow.
यदुदीरत आजयो धृष्णवे धीयते धना । युक्ष्वा मदच्युता हरी कं हनः कं वसौ दधोऽस्माँ इन्द्र वसौ दधः
When the eager ones set out for battle, striving for wealth, yoke your exhilarated steeds—whom will you strike, whom will you enrich? For us, O Indra, grant wealth.
क्रत्वा महाँ अनुष्वधं भीम आ वावृधे शवः । श्रिय ऋष्व उपाकयोर्नि शिप्री हरिवान्दधे हस्तयोर्वज्रमायसम्
By his resolve, the great one, following his own law, grew in terrible might; for glory, the lofty, adorned with beauty, the tawny, the golden-armed, placed the iron thunderbolt in his hands.
आ पप्रौ पार्थिवं रजो बद्बधे रोचना दिवि । न त्वावाँ इन्द्र कश्चन न जातो न जनिष्यतेऽति विश्वं ववक्षिथ
He filled the earthly realm, he held fast the lights in the sky; none like you, O Indra, has been born or will be born—you have surpassed all in every way.
यो अर्यो मर्तभोजनं पराददाति दाशुषे । इन्द्रो अस्मभ्यं शिक्षतु वि भजा भूरि ते वसु भक्षीय तव राधसः
He who gives away the food of mortals to the worshipper—may Indra grant that to us; divide the wealth, much is yours, may we enjoy your bounty.
मदेमदे हि नो ददिर्यूथा गवामृजुक्रतुः । सं गृभाय पुरू शतोभयाहस्त्या वसु शिशीहि राय आ भर
May he, rejoicing in our exhilaration, grant us herds of cows, straight in purpose; gather together the many, the hundreds, both kinds of wealth—shower riches, bring us prosperity.
मादयस्व सुते सचा शवसे शूर राधसे । विद्मा हि त्वा पुरूवसुमुप कामान्ससृज्महेऽथा नोऽविता भव
Rejoice in the pressed Soma, together with us, O powerful one, for strength and generous reward. For we know you to be the possessor of many treasures; we send forth our desires to you—so become our protector.
एते त इन्द्र जन्तवो विश्वं पुष्यन्ति वार्यम् । अन्तर्हि ख्यो जनानामर्यो वेदो अदाशुषां तेषां नो वेद आ भर
These beings, O Indra, support all that is excellent. Among people, you are renowned; you know the thoughts of the undevout. Bring to us the knowledge of these, and grant it.
उपो षु शृणुही गिरो मघवन्मातथा इव । यदा नः सूनृतावतः कर आदर्थयास इद्योजा न्विन्द्र ते हरी
Hear our songs, O bountiful one, as a mother listens. When you make us prosperous and truthful, then, O Indra, your two steeds are harnessed.
अक्षन्नमीमदन्त ह्यव प्रिया अधूषत । अस्तोषत स्वभानवो विप्रा नविष्ठया मती योजा न्विन्द्र ते हरी
They have eaten, they have rejoiced, they have attained favor; the beloved ones have delighted. The inspired ones have praised with new insight; now, O Indra, your two steeds are harnessed.
सुसंदृशं त्वा वयं मघवन्वन्दिषीमहि । प्र नूनं पूर्णवन्धुर स्तुतो याहि वशाँ अनु योजा न्विन्द्र ते हरी
We wish to praise you, O bountiful one, with clear vision. Now, with the yoke full and praised, come forth, following the will—now, O Indra, your two steeds are harnessed.
स घा तं वृषणं रथमधि तिष्ठाति गोविदम् । यः पात्रं हारियोजनं पूर्णमिन्द्र चिकेतति योजा न्विन्द्र ते हरी
He indeed mounts that mighty chariot, rich in cows, who considers the vessel full and ready, O Indra, for the yoking—now, O Indra, your two steeds are harnessed.
युक्तस्ते अस्तु दक्षिण उत सव्यः शतक्रतो । तेन जायामुप प्रियां मन्दानो याह्यन्धसो योजा न्विन्द्र ते हरी
Let your right and left steeds be yoked, O hundred-powered one. With them, delighted by the Soma, approach your beloved spouse—now, O Indra, your two steeds are harnessed.
युनज्मि ते ब्रह्मणा केशिना हरी उप प्र याहि दधिषे गभस्त्योः । उत्त्वा सुतासो रभसा अमन्दिषुः पूषण्वान्वज्रिन्समु पत्न्यामदः
I yoke for you the tawny-haired steeds with the hymn; come near, you have taken your seat in the hands. The pressed Somas have gladdened you, O wielder of the bolt, together with Pūṣan, in the joy of the spouse.
अश्वावति प्रथमो गोषु गच्छति सुप्रावीरिन्द्र मर्त्यस्तवोतिभिः । तमित्पृणक्षि वसुना भवीयसा सिन्धुमापो यथाभितो विचेतसः
The foremost among mortals, with horses, reaches the cows, O Indra, strong and prosperous by your aids. You fill him with greater wealth, as the rivers and waters, wise, surround him.
आपो न देवीरुप यन्ति होत्रियमवः पश्यन्ति विततं यथा रजः । प्राचैर्देवासः प्र णयन्ति देवयुं ब्रह्मप्रियं जोषयन्ते वरा इव
Like divine waters, they approach the priestly office; they see the expanse as the atmosphere is stretched out. The gods lead the godly one forward; they delight in him who loves the hymn, as brides do.
