अभि त्वा गोतमा गिरा जातवेदो विचर्षणे । द्युम्नैरभि प्र णोनुमः
To you, O knower of all births, Gotama addresses his song, O wise one; with your glories, we seek to praise you.
तमु त्वा गोतमो गिरा रायस्कामो दुवस्यति । द्युम्नैरभि प्र णोनुमः
To you, Gotama, desiring wealth, offers his song; with your glories, we seek to praise you.
तमु त्वा वाजसातममङ्गिरस्वद्धवामहे । द्युम्नैरभि प्र णोनुमः
To you, bestower of strength, descendant of Angiras, we call with our hymn; with your glories, we seek to praise you.
तमु त्वा वृत्रहन्तमं यो दस्यूँरवधूनुषे । द्युम्नैरभि प्र णोनुमः
To you, slayer of Vritra, who strikes down the Dasyus, we sing; with your glories, we seek to praise you.
अवोचाम रहूगणा अग्नये मधुमद्वचः । द्युम्नैरभि प्र णोनुमः
We have spoken words filled with sweetness for Agni, O Rahugana; with praises we exalt him with our hymns.
हिरण्यकेशो रजसो विसारेऽहिर्धुनिर्वात इव ध्रजीमान् । शुचिभ्राजा उषसो नवेदा यशस्वतीरपस्युवो न सत्याः
Golden-haired, moving through the expanse of the air, the serpent shakes, swift as the wind, bearing the stream; shining brightly, he knows the dawns, glorious and true as the observing ones.
आ ते सुपर्णा अमिनन्तँ एवैः कृष्णो नोनाव वृषभो यदीदम् । शिवाभिर्न स्मयमानाभिरागात्पतन्ति मिह स्तनयन्त्यभ्रा
To you, the beautiful-winged ones have come, just so; the dark bull has bellowed when this happened; he arrived with auspicious, unboastful ones, as clouds fall, thundering with rain.
यदीमृतस्य पयसा पियानो नयन्नृतस्य पथिभी रजिष्ठैः । अर्यमा मित्रो वरुणः परिज्मा त्वचं पृञ्चन्त्युपरस्य योनौ
When, filled with the immortal milk, you lead by the straightest paths of truth, Aryaman, Mitra, Varuna, and Parijman cleanse the covering in the womb above.
अग्ने वाजस्य गोमत ईशानः सहसो यहो । अस्मे धेहि जातवेदो महि श्रवः
Agni, lord of strength abounding in cattle, of mighty power and energy, bestow upon us, O Jatavedas, great renown.
स इधानो वसुष्कविरग्निरीळेन्यो गिरा । रेवदस्मभ्यं पुर्वणीक दीदिहि
He, the kindler, the gatherer of wealth, Agni, worthy of praise with our song, shine forth for us, O ancient one, with abundance.
क्षपो राजन्नुत त्मनाग्ने वस्तोरुतोषसः । स तिग्मजम्भ रक्षसो दह प्रति
O king, through the nights and by your own nature, Agni, through the dwelling and the dawns, with your sharp jaws burn up the demons.
अवा नो अग्न ऊतिभिर्गायत्रस्य प्रभर्मणि । विश्वासु धीषु वन्द्य
Protect us, Agni, with your aids in the contest of the singer; worthy of praise in all assemblies.
आ नो अग्ने रयिं भर सत्रासाहं वरेण्यम् । विश्वासु पृत्सु दुष्टरम्
Bring us, Agni, wealth, victorious in battles, most excellent, unconquerable in all contests.
आ नो अग्ने सुचेतुना रयिं विश्वायुपोषसम् । मार्डीकं धेहि जीवसे
Bring us, Agni, with your good guidance, wealth that nourishes all, and grant us happiness for life.
प्र पूतास्तिग्मशोचिषे वाचो गोतमाग्नये । भरस्व सुम्नयुर्गिरः
Let the purified words, O Agni of sharp flame, be brought to you, O Gotama; accept our songs with favor.
यो नो अग्नेऽभिदासत्यन्ति दूरे पदीष्ट सः । अस्माकमिद्वृधे भव
Whoever seeks to harm us, Agni, let him remain far away; be our strength for victory.
सहस्राक्षो विचर्षणिरग्नी रक्षांसि सेधति । होता गृणीत उक्थ्यः
Agni, thousand-eyed, all-wise, drives away the demons; the priest, worthy of praise, is to be lauded.
इत्था हि सोम इन्मदे ब्रह्मा चकार वर्धनम् । शविष्ठ वज्रिन्नोजसा पृथिव्या निः शशा अहिमर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
Thus, indeed, when Soma is pressed, the priest composed a hymn of increase; most mighty, O wielder of the bolt, with your power you slew the serpent on earth, and attained the sovereignty of the sun.
स त्वामदद्वृषा मदः सोमः श्येनाभृतः सुतः । येना वृत्रं निरद्भ्यो जघन्थ वज्रिन्नोजसार्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
That exhilaration, Soma, pressed and brought by the eagle, gave you strength; with it, O wielder of the bolt, you struck down Vritra from the waters, and attained the sovereignty of the sun.
प्रेह्यभीहि धृष्णुहि न ते वज्रो नि यंसते । इन्द्र नृम्णं हि ते शवो हनो वृत्रं जया अपोऽर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
Go forth, come near, be bold; your bolt does not falter; for your manly power is strength, O Indra; strike down Vritra, win the waters, and attain the sovereignty of the sun.
निरिन्द्र भूम्या अधि वृत्रं जघन्थ निर्दिवः । सृजा मरुत्वतीरव जीवधन्या इमा अपोऽर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
O Indra, on earth you struck down Vritra, and from the sky as well; release the Maruts, let these waters, full of life, flow forth, and attain the sovereignty of the sun.
इन्द्रो वृत्रस्य दोधतः सानुं वज्रेण हीळितः । अभिक्रम्याव जिघ्नतेऽपः सर्माय चोदयन्नर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
Indra, with the bolt, struck the summit of Vritra who resisted; advancing, he slays, urging the waters for shelter, and attains the sovereignty of the sun.
अधि सानौ नि जिघ्नते वज्रेण शतपर्वणा । मन्दान इन्द्रो अन्धसः सखिभ्यो गातुमिच्छत्यर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
Upon the summit he strikes down with the hundred-edged thunderbolt; Indra, delighted by the Soma, seeks the path for his companions, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
इन्द्र तुभ्यमिदद्रिवोऽनुत्तं वज्रिन्वीर्यम् । यद्ध त्यं मायिनं मृगं तमु त्वं माययावधीरर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
O Indra, for you, O crusher, is this unsurpassed heroic power, O wielder of the thunderbolt; when you slew that cunning beast by your own cunning, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
वि ते वज्रासो अस्थिरन्नवतिं नाव्या अनु । महत्त इन्द्र वीर्यं बाह्वोस्ते बलं हितमर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
Your thunderbolts have scattered the ships upon the waters; great indeed is your heroic power, O Indra, and the strength set in your arms, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
सहस्रं साकमर्चत परि ष्टोभत विंशतिः । शतैनमन्वनोनवुरिन्द्राय ब्रह्मोद्यतमर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
A thousand together, praise; let twenty resound; with hundreds let them follow on, raising the hymn for Indra, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
इन्द्रो वृत्रस्य तविषीं निरहन्सहसा सहः । महत्तदस्य पौंस्यं वृत्रं जघन्वाँ असृजदर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
Indra struck down the might of Vṛtra with overwhelming force; this is his great manliness—he slew Vṛtra and released the waters, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
इमे चित्तव मन्यवे वेपेते भियसा मही । यदिन्द्र वज्रिन्नोजसा वृत्रं मरुत्वाँ अवधीरर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
Even these two great earths trembled in fear at your wrath, O Indra, O wielder of the thunderbolt, when with your strength, accompanied by the Maruts, you slew Vṛtra, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
न वेपसा न तन्यतेन्द्रं वृत्रो वि बीभयत् । अभ्येनं वज्र आयसः सहस्रभृष्टिरायतार्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
Neither by trembling nor by thunder did Vṛtra greatly fear Indra; against him the iron thunderbolt with a thousand spikes was aimed, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
यद्वृत्रं तव चाशनिं वज्रेण समयोधयः । अहिमिन्द्र जिघांसतो दिवि ते बद्बधे शवोऽर्चन्ननु स्वराज्यम्
When you, with your thunderbolt, struck Vṛtra and his weapon, O Indra, desiring to slay the serpent, your might was held fast in the sky, singing in pursuit of sovereignty of the sun.
