संजानाना उप सीदन्नभिज्ञु पत्नीवन्तो नमस्यं नमस्यन् । रिरिक्वांसस्तन्वः कृण्वत स्वाः सखा सख्युर्निमिषि रक्षमाणाः
Recognizing, they sat down together, with their wives, worshipping the worshipful; wishing to increase, they made their forms their own; as friends, protecting the friend, they keep watch without blinking.
त्रिः सप्त यद्गुह्यानि त्वे इत्पदाविदन्निहिता यज्ञियासः । तेभी रक्षन्ते अमृतं सजोषाः पशूञ्च स्थातॄञ्चरथं च पाहि
When the worshipful ones found the three times seven hidden steps in you, with these, united, they guard the immortal; protect the cattle, those who stand and move, and the chariot.
विद्वाँ अग्ने वयुनानि क्षितीनां व्यानुषक्छुरुधो जीवसे धाः । अन्तर्विद्वाँ अध्वनो देवयानानतन्द्रो दूतो अभवो हविर्वाट्
Knowing, O Agni, the paths of peoples, you distribute the portions for life; knowing the ways, untiring, you became the messenger, the carrier of the offering.
स्वाध्यो दिव आ सप्त यह्वी रायो दुरो व्यृतज्ञा अजानन् । विदद्गव्यं सरमा दृळ्हमूर्वं येना नु कं मानुषी भोजते विट्
The self-born seven mighty rivers, from heaven, knowing the ways of wealth, have come forth; Sarama found the tightly-guarded cattle, by which now the human settler enjoys his share.
आ ये विश्वा स्वपत्यानि तस्थुः कृण्वानासो अमृतत्वाय गातुम् । मह्ना महद्भिः पृथिवी वि तस्थे माता पुत्रैरदितिर्धायसे वेः
Those who established all lordships, making the path to immortality, stood firm; by greatness, the earth was extended by the great ones; Aditi, the mother, with her sons, was established for nurture.
अधि श्रियं नि दधुश्चारुमस्मिन्दिवो यदक्षी अमृता अकृण्वन् । अध क्षरन्ति सिन्धवो न सृष्टाः प्र नीचीरग्ने अरुषीरजानन्
They placed lovely splendor upon us, when the immortals made the days in heaven; then the rivers, released, flow forth, and the red ones, O Agni, have been born downward.
रयिर्न यः पितृवित्तो वयोधाः सुप्रणीतिश्चिकितुषो न शासुः । स्योनशीरतिथिर्न प्रीणानो होतेव सद्म विधतो वि तारीत्
He who, like an heir, possesses wealth, who gives strength, who is a wise guide, who is gracious like a friendly guest, like a priest, leads the householder safely across.
देवो न यः सविता सत्यमन्मा क्रत्वा निपाति वृजनानि विश्वा । पुरुप्रशस्तो अमतिर्न सत्य आत्मेव शेवो दिधिषाय्यो भूत्
He who, like the god Savitar, with true thought, by his will, brings forth all peoples; praised by many, true in wisdom, like a benevolent spirit, is worthy of desire.
देवो न यः पृथिवीं विश्वधाया उपक्षेति हितमित्रो न राजा । पुरःसदः शर्मसदो न वीरा अनवद्या पतिजुष्टेव नारी
He, like a god, upholds the earth in all its forms; like a king, a true friend, he protects; like heroes seated in the forefront, dwelling in shelter; like a blameless woman cherished by her husband.
तं त्वा नरो दम आ नित्यमिद्धमग्ने सचन्त क्षितिषु ध्रुवासु । अधि द्युम्नं नि दधुर्भूर्यस्मिन्भवा विश्वायुर्धरुणो रयीणाम्
To you, Agni, men come constantly in their homes, always kindled, in enduring abodes; upon you they place glory in abundance—be the universal support, the foundation of riches.
वि पृक्षो अग्ने मघवानो अश्युर्वि सूरयो ददतो विश्वमायुः । सनेम वाजं समिथेष्वर्यो भागं देवेषु श्रवसे दधानाः
The generous, O Agni, have spread out their gifts; the wise have distributed all life; may we win strength in the assembly, bestowing our share among the gods for renown.
ऋतस्य हि धेनवो वावशानाः स्मदूध्नीः पीपयन्त द्युभक्ताः । परावतः सुमतिं भिक्षमाणा वि सिन्धवः समया सस्रुरद्रिम्
For the cows of truth, eager, with full udders, nourish us, sharing the day; seeking good favor from afar, like rivers flowing together, they break through the rock.
त्वे अग्ने सुमतिं भिक्षमाणा दिवि श्रवो दधिरे यज्ञियासः । नक्ता च चक्रुरुषसा विरूपे कृष्णं च वर्णमरुणं च सं धुः
Seeking your favor, O Agni, the worshipful have placed fame in heaven; night and dawn, distinct in form, have made the black and the red, blending them together.
यान्राये मर्तान्सुषूदो अग्ने ते स्याम मघवानो वयं च । छायेव विश्वं भुवनं सिसक्ष्यापप्रिवान्रोदसी अन्तरिक्षम्
Those mortals whom you, O Agni, gladly enrich—may we be among those generous ones; like a shadow, may you protect all the world, upholding earth and heaven and the midspace.
अर्वद्भिरग्ने अर्वतो नृभिर्नॄन्वीरैर्वीरान्वनुयामा त्वोताः । ईशानासः पितृवित्तस्य रायो वि सूरयः शतहिमा नो अश्युः
With horses may we conquer horses, with men may we conquer men, with heroes may we conquer heroes by your help; may we, masters of ancestral wealth, swiftly win riches, may the wise win a hundredfold.
एता ते अग्न उचथानि वेधो जुष्टानि सन्तु मनसे हृदे च । शकेम रायः सुधुरो यमं तेऽधि श्रवो देवभक्तं दधानाः
These praises, O Agni, O wise one, may they be pleasing to your mind and heart; may we, bearing your divine fame, attain enduring wealth, favored by the gods.
उपप्रयन्तो अध्वरं मन्त्रं वोचेमाग्नये । आरे अस्मे च शृण्वते
As we approach the sacrifice, let us speak the chant to Agni, for him who hears from afar and for us.
यः स्नीहितीषु पूर्व्यः संजग्मानासु कृष्टिषु । अरक्षद्दाशुषे गयम्
He who, ancient among companions, has come among peoples, has protected the life of the worshipper.
उत ब्रुवन्तु जन्तव उदग्निर्वृत्रहाजनि । धनंजयो रणेरणे
Let the beings also declare: Agni, the slayer of Vṛtra, is born, the winner of wealth in battle after battle.
यस्य दूतो असि क्षये वेषि हव्यानि वीतये । दस्मत्कृणोष्यध्वरम्
Of whom you are the messenger in the dwelling, you bring the offerings for prosperity; you make the sacrifice for us.
तमित्सुहव्यमङ्गिरः सुदेवं सहसो यहो । जना आहुः सुबर्हिषम्
Him, easy to invoke, the Angiras call the good god, the mighty one of strength, whom people call the one with beautiful seats.
आ च वहासि ताँ इह देवाँ उप प्रशस्तये । हव्या सुश्चन्द्र वीतये
You bring those gods here for praise, O shining one, the offerings for prosperity.
न योरुपब्दिरश्व्यः शृण्वे रथस्य कच्चन । यदग्ने यासि दूत्यम्
No obstacle of horse or chariot is heard when, O Agni, you go as messenger.
त्वोतो वाज्यह्रयोऽभि पूर्वस्मादपरः । प्र दाश्वाँ अग्ने अस्थात्
By your power, the horse, the swift one, surpasses the former; let the worshipper, O Agni, stand forth.
उत द्युमत्सुवीर्यं बृहदग्ने विवाससि । देवेभ्यो देव दाशुषे
You, O Agni, bestow bright, great heroism for the worshipper from the gods, O god.
जुषस्व सप्रथस्तमं वचो देवप्सरस्तमम् । हव्या जुह्वान आसनि
Accept the most widespread praise, O god, most worthy of the waters; seated, receiving the offerings with the ladle.
अथा ते अङ्गिरस्तमाग्ने वेधस्तम प्रियम् । वोचेम ब्रह्म सानसि
Therefore, O Agni, most inspired among the Angirases, most skillful, let us declare to you our cherished hymn, for you are our strength.
कस्ते जामिर्जनानामग्ने को दाश्वध्वरः । को ह कस्मिन्नसि श्रितः
Who among men is your close companion, Agni? Who is the most generous at the sacrifice? Who, indeed, is the one in whom you abide?
त्वं जामिर्जनानामग्ने मित्रो असि प्रियः । सखा सखिभ्य ईड्यः
You are the close companion of men, Agni, you are the beloved friend; you are the praiseworthy ally among friends.
यजा नो मित्रावरुणा यजा देवाँ ऋतं बृहत् । अग्ने यक्षि स्वं दमम्
Offer for us to Mitra and Varuna, offer to the gods the great and true order; Agni, offer in your own house.
