That Marut host, strong and dwelling on the mountains, I call to drink of this Soma.
To you, Indra, the songs have come as charioteers to the pressed offerings; they have gathered around you as mothers around a calf.
To you, Indra, the bright, pressed Soma juices have flowed; drink of this libation, for in all things it is meant for you.
Drink the Soma for exhilaration, Indra, the pressed juice brought by the falcon; for you are the lord and king of all peoples.
Hear the call, Indra, from afar, from the one who worships you; grant us the wealth of strength, cattle, and greatness, for you are mighty.
Indra, to whom your newest, delightful song has been born, the wise thought, the ancient, ever-flowing inspiration of truth.
Let us praise that Indra whom the hymns have strengthened; seeking his many heroic deeds, we strive to win his favor.
Now let us praise Indra, pure, with pure song; may he, grown strong with pure hymns, drink the pure Soma.
Indra, pure one, come to us, pure, with pure aids; pure, grant us wealth, pure, drink the Soma.
Indra, pure, grant us wealth, pure, give treasures to the worshipper; pure, you slay the foes, pure, you seek the prize.
For him, the dawns have crossed the darkness of night, singing aloud for Indra; for him, the seven motherly waters have stood firm, the rivers, swift-flowing, to aid the hero.
Pierced through, even with a sharp weapon, three times seven peaks of the mountains were split; neither god nor mortal could withstand what the mighty bull has done.
Indra’s thunderbolt is iron, unyielding; the greatest strength is in Indra’s arms; Indra’s resolves are set in his head, and they come forth, eager for praise, attentive to the call.
I consider you the most worthy of worship among those to be worshipped; I consider you the shaker among the unshaken; I consider you, Indra, the sign among the strong; I consider you the bull among peoples.
When you, Indra, take the thunderbolt in your arms, driven by exhilaration to the battle, the mountains yield, the cows go forth, and the prayers reach Indra.
Let us praise him who has created all these beings, the lesser and the greater; with Indra may we win Mitra’s friendship by our songs, and with reverence may we approach the bull.
All the gods, seeking help against Vṛtra’s breath, chose you as their friend; with the Maruts, Indra, may your friendship be with us, and thus may you win all battles.
Sixty-three Maruts, growing strong, noble as herds of cattle at dawn, attend you; grant us our share, make us mighty, and with this offering we serve you.
Who could withstand your thunderbolt, Indra, among the sharp-armed hosts of the Maruts? The weaponless demons and ungodly you scattered with your whirling wheel, O mighty one.
Send forth a splendid hymn for the great, fierce, and powerful one, for the most auspicious wealth; for the song-knower, for Indra, offer many praises—may he, perhaps, take notice.
For the bearer of hymns, for the mighty, let the thought flow like a river to its farthest shore; touch, with insight, the body of the well-heard, the most pleasing—may he, perhaps, take notice.
Know this, which Indra delights in; praise him with a fine hymn, call upon him with reverence; adorn, O singer, the one who is not to be harmed, make your voice heard—may he, perhaps, take notice.
The black drop, adorned with ten thousand, descended into the shining Aṃśumatī; Indra, with his power, brought it back, and with his strength, he set aside the sticky ones.
I saw the drop moving apart in the gathering place, by the banks of the Aṃśumatī river; like a dark cloud in the sky, I stood watching—may you, strong ones, fight in the battle.
Then the drop, in the lap of Aṃśumatī, held its form, shining; the godless hosts approached, but Indra, yoked with Bṛhaspati, overcame them.
You, Indra, from birth, became the enemy of those without enemies; you found the hidden heavens and earth, and from the abundant worlds you brought forth battle.
You, indeed, with unmatched strength, Indra, struck down with the thunderbolt, emboldened by the weapon; you destroyed Śuṣṇa with your weapons, and by your power, you found the cows.
You, indeed, bull among peoples, became the slayer of foes, the thundercloud among adversaries; you released the rivers, you held back the obstructors, and you conquered the wives of the Dāsas.
He, the wise one, who roars in the pressings, whose wrath is unmatched, who is splendid like a serpent—he alone, the doer of heroic deeds, is called the slayer of Vṛtra by all.
That Vṛtra-slaying Indra, supporter of people, we invoke with excellent praise as one to be offered to; may that generous Maghavan be our protector, our advocate, and the giver of strength and renown.
