अविप्रो वा यदविधद्विप्रो वेन्द्र ते वचः । स प्र ममन्दत्त्वाया शतक्रतो प्राचामन्यो अहंसन
O Indra, if the inspired sage, whether he speaks with full insight or not, utters words to you, O hundred-powered one, may he bring forth praise for you; let him, who is mindful of the east, not harm us.
उग्रबाहुर्म्रक्षकृत्वा पुरंदरो यदि मे शृणवद्धवम् । वसूयवो वसुपतिं शतक्रतुं स्तोमैरिन्द्रं हवामहे
O Indra, wielder of strong arms, destroyer of fortresses, if you hear my call, we invoke you, lord of riches, hundred-powered, with hymns, together with those who desire wealth.
न पापासो मनामहे नारायासो न जळ्हवः । यदिन्न्विन्द्रं वृषणं सचा सुते सखायं कृणवामहै
We do not seek the wicked, nor the weary, nor the sluggish; if, indeed, we make Indra, the mighty, our companion in the pressed Soma, let us be friends.
उग्रं युयुज्म पृतनासु सासहिमृणकातिमदाभ्यम् । वेदा भृमं चित्सनिता रथीतमो वाजिनं यमिदू नशत्
We have yoked the fierce one in battles, the mighty, the destroyer of foes, with exhilarating draughts; he knows even the trembling one, the best charioteer, the winner of booty, whom none can surpass.
यत इन्द्र भयामहे ततो नो अभयं कृधि । मघवञ्छग्धि तव तन्न ऊतिभिर्वि द्विषो वि मृधो जहि
From whatever we fear, O Indra, from that make us fearless; O bountiful one, grant us that by your aids—scatter our haters, scatter our foes.
त्वं हि राधस्पते राधसो महः क्षयस्यासि विधतः । तं त्वा वयं मघवन्निन्द्र गिर्वणः सुतावन्तो हवामहे
For you, O lord of riches, are the distributor of great wealth and abundance; you, O bountiful Indra, singer-loving, we invoke with offerings of Soma.
इन्द्र स्पळुत वृत्रहा परस्पा नो वरेण्यः । स नो रक्षिषच्चरमं स मध्यमं स पश्चात्पातु नः पुरः
Indra, slayer of Vṛtra, unassailable, you are to be chosen by us; may he protect us at the end, in the middle, and from behind—may he guard us in front.
त्वं नः पश्चादधरादुत्तरात्पुर इन्द्र नि पाहि विश्वतः । आरे अस्मत्कृणुहि दैव्यं भयमारे हेतीरदेवीः
Guard us, Indra, from behind, from below, from above, and from the front, on every side; keep far from us divine danger, keep far the weapons of the godless.
अद्याद्या श्वःश्व इन्द्र त्रास्व परे च नः । विश्वा च नो जरितॄन्सत्पते अहा दिवा नक्तं च रक्षिषः
Today, tomorrow, and every day, O Indra, protect us, and in the days to come; O lord of the good, guard all our singers by day and by night.
प्रभङ्गी शूरो मघवा तुवीमघः सम्मिश्लो वीर्याय कम् । उभा ते बाहू वृषणा शतक्रतो नि या वज्रं मिमिक्षतुः
The generous hero, the bountiful one, eager for strength, has joined for valor; both your mighty arms, O hundred-powered, have fashioned the thunderbolt.
प्रो अस्मा उपस्तुतिं भरता यज्जुजोषति । उक्थैरिन्द्रस्य माहिनं वयो वर्धन्ति सोमिनो भद्रा इन्द्रस्य रातयः
Let us bring forth praise for him, which he will gladly accept; with hymns, the Soma-offerers magnify Indra's greatness; the gracious gifts of Indra increase.
अयुजो असमो नृभिरेकः कृष्टीरयास्यः । पूर्वीरति प्र वावृधे विश्वा जातान्योजसा भद्रा इन्द्रस्य रातयः
Unyoked, unmatched among men, he alone advances among the peoples; by his might he has surpassed many, all beings; the gracious gifts of Indra increase.
अहितेन चिदर्वता जीरदानुः सिषासति । प्रवाच्यमिन्द्र तत्तव वीर्याणि करिष्यतो भद्रा इन्द्रस्य रातयः
Even with an unyoked horse, the old enemy tries to prevail; let your deeds, O Indra, be spoken of, your heroic acts; the gracious gifts of Indra increase.
आ याहि कृणवाम त इन्द्र ब्रह्माणि वर्धना । येभिः शविष्ठ चाकनो भद्रमिह श्रवस्यते भद्रा इन्द्रस्य रातयः
Come here, Indra, let us perform for you songs of praise that bring increase; with these, most powerful one, delight yourself—may good fame be here; the gracious gifts of Indra increase.
धृषतश्चिद्धृषन्मनः कृणोषीन्द्र यत्त्वम् । तीव्रैः सोमैः सपर्यतो नमोभिः प्रतिभूषतो भद्रा इन्द्रस्य रातयः
Even with a bold mind, you act boldly, O Indra, when you, worshipped with strong Somas and reverence, are adorned; the gracious gifts of Indra increase.
अव चष्ट ऋचीषमोऽवताँ इव मानुषः । जुष्ट्वी दक्षस्य सोमिनः सखायं कृणुते युजं भद्रा इन्द्रस्य रातयः
He has looked down as a protector, as a guardian over men; having enjoyed the skill of the Soma-presser, he makes a friend as his companion; the gracious gifts of Indra increase.
विश्वे त इन्द्र वीर्यं देवा अनु क्रतुं ददुः । भुवो विश्वस्य गोपतिः पुरुष्टुत भद्रा इन्द्रस्य रातयः
All the gods, O Indra, have given you strength and counsel; you are the lord of all existence, much-praised; the gracious gifts of Indra increase.
गृणे तदिन्द्र ते शव उपमं देवतातये । यद्धंसि वृत्रमोजसा शचीपते भद्रा इन्द्रस्य रातयः
I praise that power of yours, Indra, supreme among the gods, for which you, lord of might, destroyed Vṛtra with your strength; the gracious gifts of Indra increase.
समनेव वपुष्यतः कृणवन्मानुषा युगा । विदे तदिन्द्रश्चेतनमध श्रुतो भद्रा इन्द्रस्य रातयः
Fashioning the two as if alike, the generations of men; Indra, the wise, perceives this—indeed, the bounties of Indra are renowned and auspicious.
उज्जातमिन्द्र ते शव उत्त्वामुत्तव क्रतुम् । भूरिगो भूरि वावृधुर्मघवन्तव शर्मणि भद्रा इन्द्रस्य रातयः
Exalted is your might, Indra, and your wisdom is supreme; many, indeed, have grown strong in your shelter, O generous one—Indra’s gifts are auspicious.
अहं च त्वं च वृत्रहन्सं युज्याव सनिभ्य आ । अरातीवा चिदद्रिवोऽनु नौ शूर मंसते भद्रा इन्द्रस्य रातयः
You and I, O slayer of Vṛtra, are yoked together as allies; even against the hostile, O stone-wielder, the hero thinks upon us—Indra’s gifts are auspicious.
सत्यमिद्वा उ तं वयमिन्द्रं स्तवाम नानृतम् । महाँ असुन्वतो वधो भूरि ज्योतींषि सुन्वतो भद्रा इन्द्रस्य रातयः
Truly, we praise that Indra, not falsehood; great is his destruction for the non-sacrificer, many are the lights for the sacrificer—Indra’s gifts are auspicious.
स पूर्व्यो महानां वेनः क्रतुभिरानजे । यस्य द्वारा मनुष्पिता देवेषु धिय आनजे
He, the ancient singer of the great, with his powers, is ever new; by whose doors Manu’s father brought wisdom among the gods.
दिवो मानं नोत्सदन्सोमपृष्ठासो अद्रयः । उक्था ब्रह्म च शंस्या
The stones pressed with Soma do not overstep the measure of heaven; hymns and sacred utterances are to be praised.
स विद्वाँ अङ्गिरोभ्य इन्द्रो गा अवृणोदप । स्तुषे तदस्य पौंस्यम्
He, knowing, chose the cows for the Angirases, O Indra; I praise that manliness of his.
स प्रत्नथा कविवृध इन्द्रो वाकस्य वक्षणिः । शिवो अर्कस्य होमन्यस्मत्रा गन्त्ववसे
He, ancient, grown by the seers, Indra, the treasure of speech; gracious to the hymn’s offering, may he come here for our aid.
आदू नु ते अनु क्रतुं स्वाहा वरस्य यज्यवः । श्वात्रमर्का अनूषतेन्द्र गोत्रस्य दावने
Now, according to your will, let the worshippers with Svāhā follow; the hymns have sought your protection, Indra, for the winning of the clan.
इन्द्रे विश्वानि वीर्या कृतानि कर्त्वानि च । यमर्का अध्वरं विदुः
In Indra are all heroic deeds accomplished and to be done; whom the hymns know as the lord of the sacrifice.
यत्पाञ्चजन्यया विशेन्द्रे घोषा असृक्षत । अस्तृणाद्बर्हणा विपोऽर्यो मानस्य स क्षयः
When, with the people of Pañcajana, the shouts of Indra resounded; he spread out the seats, the rivers, for the Arya, that is the dwelling of the mind.
इयमु ते अनुष्टुतिश्चकृषे तानि पौंस्या । प्रावश्चक्रस्य वर्तनिम्
This praise of yours has been composed, for those manly deeds; you have opened the path of the wheel.
