Hymns praise him, circling like wheels, as rivers flow to the sea; now, as lord of skill and assembly, with strength, he climbs the mountain in splendor.
He, Turvan, shines greatly in dust and vigor; his force blazes like the mountain's lightning. By whose delight, he subdued Shushna, the magician, and made the enemies rejoice.
When the divine power is stirred, it urges Indra, as the dawn urges the sun. He, with bold strength, drives away darkness, raising dust, the mighty one, with roaring voice.
When you spread the firm support, the sky, you stood above with your might, O Indra. In the joy of the pressed Soma, you delighted, and struck down the serpent, releasing the waters and the ocean.
You, Indra, established the support of heaven with your strength, and the dwellings of earth with your greatness. In the joy of the pressed Soma, you broke the serpent's bonds and released the waters.
I offer my thought to the most mighty, the great lord of vast wealth, whose true power is renowned. Like waters in a channel, his difficult gift is open to all, his strength is unconcealed.
Then, O universal one, all mankind rejoices at your command; the waters flow downward as at the offering, bearing oblations. When, upon the mountain, the golden thunderbolt of Indra, the delight-giver, was not restrained.
To him, the awe-inspiring, we offer reverence at the sacrifice, as the radiant dawn brings forth brightness for the one to be served. Whose power, famed as Indra's, has made a light for glory, guiding the swift ones.
These, O Indra, are we—praised by many—who, relying on you, act with strength. None other than you, O singer of praises, can unite our words; as the earth is joined, so accept our speech.
Much, O Indra, is your valor; we are yours, O generous one. Fulfill the desire of the singer. The vast sky follows your might, and this earth, too, is set for your strength.
You, O Indra, with your thunderbolt, have cleaved that great, broad mountain, O wielder of the thunder. You released the confined waters to flow; with all your power, you have established the whole.
Now, the immortal, born of strength, stirs not; when he became the priest and messenger of Vivasvat. He moves through the paths set by the gods, spreading the offering with devotion.
He, youthful and ageless, comes to his own, thirsting, standing among the fires. Like a horse, his back shines with moisture; like thunder on the mountain's summit, he resounds.
He, fierce with Rudras and Vasus, is the chief priest, seated for wealth among mortals. Like a chariot moving swiftly in the races, the god brings forth desirable things for life.
Driven by wind, he stands among the fires, powerful, with empty ladles, making noise. When, O Agni, you, the bull among the woods, shine, the black one becomes the bright, ageless wool.
The roaring flame, stirred by wind, moves through the forest; like leaders in a herd, it blows down the bamboo. Moving forward, it traverses the path with strength, frightening the birds from their resting and flying places.
The Bhṛgus have established you among men, like wealth, lovely and well-invoked for the people. As the priest, O Agni, as the honored guest, as a friend, you are auspicious for the divine birth.
The seven ladles choose the most worthy priest, whom the worshippers select at the sacrifices. Agni, the delight of all the Vasus, I honor with devotion and seek the treasure.
O son of strength, grant us today, for the singers, unbroken, friendly protection. Agni, praised, free from distress, wide in power, O son of energy, with your ancestors.
Be a shelter for the singer, O radiant one; be protection for the generous among the generous. Widely, O Agni, shield the singer from distress; in the morning, may the wise one come with thought.
By you, O Agni, other fires rejoice; all the immortals delight in you. Vaiśvānara, you are the navel of the peoples; like a pillar, you are honored among the tribes.
Agni is the crown of heaven, the navel of earth; thus he became the delight of the two worlds. The gods created you, O Vaiśvānara, as a divine light for the Arya.
Like the rays of the sun, steadfast, the treasures are placed in Vaiśvānara Agni. Those that are in the mountains, in the plants, in the waters, those among men—he is their king.
Like the great ones, the two worlds sing to the son; the human priest, skilled as Dakṣa. With true strength, they praise Vaiśvānara, the best among men, with ancient hymns.
O Jātavedas, Vaiśvānara, your greatness has expanded from the lofty heaven; you are king of peoples, of humankind, and in battle you have made a path for the gods.
Now I will proclaim the greatness of the Bull, whom the Purus follow, the slayer of Vṛtra; Vaiśvānara Agni, striking down the foe, has shaken the woods and split open Śambara's stronghold.
Vaiśvānara, by his greatness, is manifest among all peoples; among the Bharadvājas, the worshippers, he shines forth; in the house of Śātavaneya, with his sharp flames, Agni, rich in praise, grows strong in many abodes.
The resplendent Agni, the banner of the assembly, the well-guiding envoy, swiftly to be sought, the twice-born, the renowned wealth, the gift that Mātariśvan brought to Bhṛgu.
To him both rulers and subjects resort, those with offerings, the Uśijs and mortals; even from heaven he was the first to be established as Hotar, to be questioned, lord of the clans, the wise one among the tribes.
May we, with new praise, approach him who is born in our hearts, whose tongue is sweet, whose fame is ours; whom the priests, the active men, have generated among the people, striving with zeal.
