उषो यदद्य भानुना वि द्वारावृणवो दिवः । प्र नो यच्छतादवृकं पृथु च्छर्दिः प्र देवि गोमतीरिषः
When today, O Dawn, you open the doors of heaven with your light, may you grant us unfailing, wide protection, O goddess, and abundant, cattle-rich blessings.
सं नो राया बृहता विश्वपेशसा मिमिक्ष्वा समिळाभिरा । सं द्युम्नेन विश्वतुरोषो महि सं वाजैर्वाजिनीवति
Unite us with great, all-beautiful wealth, with gatherings, with glory, O Dawn; unite us with all-conquering might, with strength, O bringer of prizes.
उषो भद्रेभिरा गहि दिवश्चिद्रोचनादधि । वहन्त्वरुणप्सव उप त्वा सोमिनो गृहम्
O Dawn, come with blessings, from the very shining of heaven; the bearers of Varuṇa bring you, the Soma-offerers welcome you to their home.
सुपेशसं सुखं रथं यमध्यस्था उषस्त्वम् । तेना सुश्रवसं जनं प्रावाद्य दुहितर्दिवः
The splendid, comfortable chariot in which you stand, O Dawn—by that, lead the renowned people forward, O daughter of heaven.
वयश्चित्ते पतत्रिणो द्विपच्चतुष्पदर्जुनि । उषः प्रारन्नृतूँरनु दिवो अन्तेभ्यस्परि
Birds in your mind, winged ones, bipeds and quadrupeds, O Dawn, have awakened, following the seasons, at the edge of heaven.
व्युच्छन्ती हि रश्मिभिर्विश्वमाभासि रोचनम् । तां त्वामुषर्वसूयवो गीर्भिः कण्वा अहूषत
For as you shine forth with your rays, you illumine all the realms; you, O Dawn, the Kanvas have called with their songs, longing for wealth.
उदु त्यं जातवेदसं देवं वहन्ति केतवः । दृशे विश्वाय सूर्यम्
The rays carry up that god, Jātavedas, the Sun, for all to see.
अप त्ये तायवो यथा नक्षत्रा यन्त्यक्तुभिः । सूराय विश्वचक्षसे
As those rays, like thieves, depart as the stars with the night, they go to the Sun, the all-seeing one.
अदृश्रमस्य केतवो वि रश्मयो जनाँ अनु । भ्राजन्तो अग्नयो यथा
The rays of him whom we have not seen spread out among the people, shining like fires.
तरणिर्विश्वदर्शतो ज्योतिष्कृदसि सूर्य । विश्वमा भासि रोचनम्
Swiftly moving, all-seeing, you are the maker of light, O Sun; you illumine all the realms.
प्रत्यङ्देवानां विशः प्रत्यङ्ङुदेषि मानुषान् । प्रत्यङ्विश्वं स्वर्दृशे
You turn towards the gatherings of the gods, you turn towards the gatherings of men, you turn towards all to be seen.
येना पावक चक्षसा भुरण्यन्तं जनाँ अनु । त्वं वरुण पश्यसि
With that pure eye, O radiant one, you behold all people; you, O Varuṇa, see.
वि द्यामेषि रजस्पृथ्वहा मिमानो अक्तुभिः । पश्यञ्जन्मानि सूर्य
You traverse the sky, measuring the vast expanse with your rays, observing the births, O Sun.
सप्त त्वा हरितो रथे वहन्ति देव सूर्य । शोचिष्केशं विचक्षण
Seven bay steeds carry you in your chariot, O god Sun, you with fiery hair, all-seeing.
अयुक्त सप्त शुन्ध्युवः सूरो रथस्य नप्त्यः । ताभिर्याति स्वयुक्तिभिः
The Sun, offspring of the chariot, has yoked the seven shining mares; with these self-harnessed ones he journeys onward.
उद्वयं तमसस्परि ज्योतिष्पश्यन्त उत्तरम् । देवं देवत्रा सूर्यमगन्म ज्योतिरुत्तमम्
Rising above the darkness, we behold the higher light; we have reached the god among gods, the Sun, the supreme light.
उद्यन्नद्य मित्रमह आरोहन्नुत्तरां दिवम् । हृद्रोगं मम सूर्य हरिमाणं च नाशय
Rising today, O Sun, friend of all, ascending the highest heaven, remove my heart's disease and the yellow hue from me.
शुकेषु मे हरिमाणं रोपणाकासु दध्मसि । अथो हारिद्रवेषु मे हरिमाणं नि दध्मसि
Into the white vessels we place the yellow hue; and now into the vessels of turmeric we lay the yellow hue for me.
उदगादयमादित्यो विश्वेन सहसा सह । द्विषन्तं मह्यं रन्धयन्मो अहं द्विषते रधम्
This Sun has risen with all-conquering might; driving away my adversary, let me not fall into the power of my foe.
अभि त्यं मेषं पुरुहूतमृग्मियमिन्द्रं गीर्भिर्मदता वस्वो अर्णवम् । यस्य द्यावो न विचरन्ति मानुषा भुजे मंहिष्ठमभि विप्रमर्चत
With hymns let us exalt Indra, the ram, much-invoked, worthy of song, the oceanic lord of wealth; whom, like the heavens, men cannot encompass, whose might is greatest—praise him, O inspired ones.
अभीमवन्वन्स्वभिष्टिमूतयोऽन्तरिक्षप्रां तविषीभिरावृतम् । इन्द्रं दक्षास ऋभवो मदच्युतं शतक्रतुं जवनी सूनृतारुहत्
The eager ones, seeking their own desire, have approached him, whose strength fills the midspace; the skillful, with their powers, have mounted Indra, the hundred-powered, who is stirred by delight.
त्वं गोत्रमङ्गिरोभ्योऽवृणोरपोतात्रये शतदुरेषु गातुवित् । ससेन चिद्विमदायावहो वस्वाजावद्रिं वावसानस्य नर्तयन्
You, O Indra, chose the cows for the Angirases, opening the path for the far-dwelling, knowing the way; even with your army you brought the wealth for Vimada, driving the stone to dance for the eager one.
त्वमपामपिधानावृणोरपाधारयः पर्वते दानुमद्वसु । वृत्रं यदिन्द्र शवसावधीरहिमादित्सूर्यं दिव्यारोहयो दृशे
You uncovered the coverings of the waters, O Indra, and let the streams flow on the mountain, O giver of wealth; when, with your might, you slew Vritra, you made the Sun ascend the sky for vision.
त्वं मायाभिरप मायिनोऽधमः स्वधाभिर्ये अधि शुप्तावजुह्वत । त्वं पिप्रोर्नृमणः प्रारुजः पुरः प्र ऋजिश्वानं दस्युहत्येष्वाविथ
By your powers you cast down the cunning ones with their cunning, those who, by their own nature, lay sleeping; you shattered the strongholds of Pipru, O manly one, and aided Rjishvan in the slaying of foes.
त्वं कुत्सं शुष्णहत्येष्वाविथारन्धयोऽतिथिग्वाय शम्बरम् । महान्तं चिदर्बुदं नि क्रमीः पदा सनादेव दस्युहत्याय जज्ञिषे
You aided Kutsa in the slaying of Shushna, and for Atithigva you subdued Shambara; even the great Arbuda you trampled underfoot—since ancient times you were born for the slaying of foes.
त्वे विश्वा तविषी सध्र्यग्घिता तव राधः सोमपीथाय हर्षते । तव वज्रश्चिकिते बाह्वोर्हितो वृश्चा शत्रोरव विश्वानि वृष्ण्या
All powers are united in you, ever near; your bounty delights at the Soma offering; your thunderbolt, set in your arms, is keen—by it you strike down all the strength of the enemy.
वि जानीह्यार्यान्ये च दस्यवो बर्हिष्मते रन्धया शासदव्रतान् । शाकी भव यजमानस्य चोदिता विश्वेत्ता ते सधमादेषु चाकन
Discern the Aryas and also the Dasyus; subdue the lawless, O Indra, for the one who offers on the sacred grass; be the inciter for the sacrificer—may all your favors be present in the gatherings.
अनुव्रताय रन्धयन्नपव्रतानाभूभिरिन्द्रः श्नथयन्ननाभुवः । वृद्धस्य चिद्वर्धतो द्यामिनक्षत स्तवानो वम्रो वि जघान संदिहः
Indra, subduing those who follow and those who do not, shattering the hostile, has crushed the unsubmissive; even the old, though growing, he has not spared—praising, the humble has slain the arrogant.
तक्षद्यत्त उशना सहसा सहो वि रोदसी मज्मना बाधते शवः । आ त्वा वातस्य नृमणो मनोयुज आ पूर्यमाणमवहन्नभि श्रवः
When Ushanas forged the power, the force that by its might pervades heaven and earth, your strength, O Indra, conquers; to you, yoked by the mind of Vata's son, the fame that fills all is brought.
मन्दिष्ट यदुशने काव्ये सचाँ इन्द्रो वङ्कू वङ्कुतराधि तिष्ठति । उग्रो ययिं निरपः स्रोतसासृजद्वि शुष्णस्य दृंहिता ऐरयत्पुरः
Most delightful is the wisdom of Ushanas, with which Indra stands above all, bending and surpassing; the fierce one released the waters in the contest, he shattered the strongholds of Shushna.
