त्वं सूकरस्य दर्दृहि तव दर्दर्तु सूकरः । स्तोतॄनिन्द्रस्य रायसि किमस्मान्दुच्छुनायसे नि षु स्वप
You, strike the boar, and let the boar strike you; you guard the worshippers of Indra’s wealth. Why do you bark at us? Let them sleep.
सस्तु माता सस्तु पिता सस्तु श्वा सस्तु विश्पतिः । ससन्तु सर्वे ज्ञातयः सस्त्वयमभितो जनः
Let the mother be at peace, let the father be at peace, let the dog be at peace, let the lord of the house be at peace; let all the kin be at peace, let all the people around be at peace.
य आस्ते यश्च चरति यश्च पश्यति नो जनः । तेषां सं हन्मो अक्षाणि यथेदं हर्म्यं तथा
Whoever sits, whoever moves, whoever looks upon us—of all these people, we bind their eyes, just as this house is bound.
सहस्रशृङ्गो वृषभो यः समुद्रादुदाचरत् । तेना सहस्येना वयं नि जनान्स्वापयामसि
The thousand-horned bull who rose from the ocean—with that mighty one, we lull all people to sleep.
प्रोष्ठेशया वह्येशया नारीर्यास्तल्पशीवरीः । स्त्रियो याः पुण्यगन्धास्ताः सर्वाः स्वापयामसि
Those women who lie on the back, those who lie on the side, those who are on soft beds, those women with pleasant fragrance—we lull them all to sleep.
क ईं व्यक्ता नरः सनीळा रुद्रस्य मर्या अध स्वश्वाः
Who has clearly known them—these men, close companions of Rudra, noble, with their own horses?
नकिर्ह्येषां जनूंषि वेद ते अङ्ग विद्रे मिथो जनित्रम्
No one knows their generations; indeed, their origin is hidden from each other.
अभि स्वपूभिर्मिथो वपन्त वातस्वनसः श्येना अस्पृध्रन्
With their own forms, they mutually shine forth, resounding like the wind; the eagles have not touched them.
एतानि धीरो निण्या चिकेत पृश्निर्यदूधो मही जभार
The wise one has perceived these secrets, when the spotted cow bore the mighty one.
सा विट् सुवीरा मरुद्भिरस्तु सनात्सहन्ती पुष्यन्ती नृम्णम्
May she, strong and heroic with the Maruts, ever victorious, nourishing strength, be ours.
यामं येष्ठाः शुभा शोभिष्ठाः श्रिया सम्मिश्ला ओजोभिरुग्राः
You are most desirable, splendid, shining with beauty, united in glory, mighty with strength, formidable.
उग्रं व ओज स्थिरा शवांस्यधा मरुद्भिर्गणस्तुविष्मान्
Your power is fierce, your strength firm, your energies enduring; the host of the Maruts is exceedingly mighty.
शुभ्रो वः शुष्मः क्रुध्मी मनांसि धुनिर्मुनिरिव शर्धस्य धृष्णोः
Your force is bright, your wrath intense, your minds are stirring, like a sage rousing the might of a troop.
सनेम्यस्मद्युयोत दिद्युं मा वो दुर्मतिरिह प्रणङ्नः
May the lightning keep us safe from harm; let not your ill will come near us here.
प्रिया वो नाम हुवे तुराणामा यत्तृपन्मरुतो वावशानाः
I call upon your beloved name, O swift ones, you Maruts who delight in the offering.
स्वायुधास इष्मिणः सुनिष्का उत स्वयं तन्वः शुम्भमानाः
Armed with your own weapons, adorned with good ornaments, you shine forth, each one displaying your own form.
शुची वो हव्या मरुतः शुचीनां शुचिं हिनोम्यध्वरं शुचिभ्यः । ऋतेन सत्यमृतसाप आयञ्छुचिजन्मानः शुचयः पावकाः
Pure are your offerings, O Maruts, among the pure; I present a pure sacrifice to the pure ones. By truth, you approach the true rite, born pure, pure and radiant.
अंसेष्वा मरुतः खादयो वो वक्षस्सु रुक्मा उपशिश्रियाणाः । वि विद्युतो न वृष्टिभी रुचाना अनु स्वधामायुधैर्यच्छमानाः
On your shoulders, O Maruts, are your ornaments; on your breasts, golden decorations are laid. Like flashes of lightning with showers, you shine forth, moving with your own weapons in order.
प्र बुध्न्या व ईरते महांसि प्र नामानि प्रयज्यवस्तिरध्वम् । सहस्रियं दम्यं भागमेतं गृहमेधीयं मरुतो जुषध्वम्
The great deeds of yours are awakened, O Maruts; your names are proclaimed in the sacred rites. Accept this thousandfold, noble share, this household portion, O Maruts.
यदि स्तुतस्य मरुतो अधीथेत्था विप्रस्य वाजिनो हवीमन् । मक्षू रायः सुवीर्यस्य दात नू चिद्यमन्य आदभदरावा
If, O Maruts, you heed the praise of the one who lauds you, the inspired, the strong in sacrifice, then swiftly grant wealth and heroic strength; let not another, O roaring ones, surpass us.
अत्यासो न ये मरुतः स्वञ्चो यक्षदृशो न शुभयन्त मर्याः । ते हर्म्येष्ठाः शिशवो न शुभ्रा वत्सासो न प्रक्रीळिनः पयोधाः
Like horses, O Maruts, swift and adorned, like young men shining in appearance, you dwell in palaces, bright as calves, playful as frolicking milk-fed young.
दशस्यन्तो नो मरुतो मृळन्तु वरिवस्यन्तो रोदसी सुमेके । आरे गोहा नृहा वधो वो अस्तु सुम्नेभिरस्मे वसवो नमध्वम्
Favour us, O Maruts, grant us mercy; make the two worlds easy to traverse. Let your slaughter be far from cattle and men; with goodwill, O Vasus, accept our homage.
आ वो होता जोहवीति सत्तः सत्राचीं रातिं मरुतो गृणानः । य ईवतो वृषणो अस्ति गोपाः सो अद्वयावी हवते व उक्थैः
The priest, seated, calls you, O Maruts, with praise, seeking your generous gift. He who is eager, strong, and a protector, he invokes you with hymns, O Maruts.
इमे तुरं मरुतो रामयन्तीमे सहः सहस आ नमन्ति । इमे शंसं वनुष्यतो नि पान्ति गुरु द्वेषो अररुषे दधन्ति
These Maruts bring strength, these bow to might; these protect the praise of the worshipper, warding off heavy hatred, placing it upon the hostile.
इमे रध्रं चिन्मरुतो जुनन्ति भृमिं चिद्यथा वसवो जुषन्त । अप बाधध्वं वृषणस्तमांसि धत्त विश्वं तनयं तोकमस्मे
These Maruts even help the weak, as Vasus they favour the humble. Drive away all darkness, O mighty ones, grant us all offspring and descendants.
मा वो दात्रान्मरुतो निरराम मा पश्चाद्दघ्म रथ्यो विभागे । आ न स्पार्हे भजतना वसव्ये यदीं सुजातं वृषणो वो अस्ति
Let not your gifts, O Maruts, be withdrawn from us; let us not come last in the division of wealth. Distribute to us the desirable share, O Vasus, if your manly power is well-born.
सं यद्धनन्त मन्युभिर्जनासः शूरा यह्वीष्वोषधीषु विक्षु । अध स्मा नो मरुतो रुद्रियासस्त्रातारो भूत पृतनास्वर्यः
When people join together with their spirits, heroes, strong in horses, among plants and clans, then, O Maruts, O children of Rudra, be our protectors in battles, victorious.
भूरि चक्र मरुतः पित्र्याण्युक्थानि या वः शस्यन्ते पुरा चित् । मरुद्भिरुग्रः पृतनासु साळ्हा मरुद्भिरित्सनिता वाजमर्वा
Much have you done, O Maruts, the ancestral hymns which have long been praised for you. Fierce with the Maruts, victorious in battles, with the Maruts one wins the prize, the swift steed.
अस्मे वीरो मरुतः शुष्म्यस्तु जनानां यो असुरो विधर्ता । अपो येन सुक्षितये तरेमाध स्वमोको अभि वः स्याम
May there be a mighty hero among us, O Maruts, strong among people, who is a lord, an arranger; by whom we may cross over the waters for safe dwelling. May we, with our own household, come near to you.
तन्न इन्द्रो वरुणो मित्रो अग्निराप ओषधीर्वनिनो जुषन्त । शर्मन्स्याम मरुतामुपस्थे यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः
May Indra, Varuṇa, Mitra, Agni, the Waters, the Plants, and the Forests accept this for us. May we find shelter in the lap of the Maruts. May you always protect us with well-being.
