Thus Vasistha, desiring wealth, praises Agni the mighty, the all-encompassing. He has spread forth food, wealth, and strength for us; may you always protect us with well-being.
Let those devoted to the gods sing to you at the sacrifices, Heaven and Earth, with reverence, for sustenance. Whose prayers, O wise ones, are unmatched, spreading everywhere like branches of trees.
Let the sacrifice proceed, like a chariot with a yoke; rise up, united in mind, with clarified butter. Spread the sacred grass for the proper rite; let the divine flames stand upright.
As sons, bearing gifts, approach their mother, so let the gods sit on the sacred grass. Let all-knowing Agni guide our rites; O gods, do not let enmity come near us.
May those streams of truth, ever-yielding, flow willingly for you, O worshipful ones. Today, come to the greatest of treasures; come together, united in mind, and strive.
So, O Agni, be gracious to our people; with you, O mighty one, may we not be defeated. With wealth as our companion, in harmonious assembly, unharmed—may you always protect us with well-being.
I call upon Dadhikrā, upon the Ashvins, upon Ushas, upon Agni kindled, upon Bhaga for favor; upon Indra, Vishnu, Pūshan, Brahmanaspati, the Ādityas, Heaven and Earth, the Waters, and the realm of light.
Awakening Dadhikrā with reverence, advancing toward the sacrifice, seating the goddess Ilā upon the sacred grass, we invoke the Ashvins, wise and readily called.
Recognizing Dadhikrā, I address Agni, Ushas, Sūrya, and the cow; the white one, the brown one, the four of Varuṇa—may they drive away all misfortunes from us.
Dadhikrā, the foremost, the prize-winning steed, is first among chariots, knowing; united with Ushas, Sūrya, the Ādityas, the Vasus, and the Angiras.
May Dadhikrā lead us on the right path, follow the way of truth; may the divine host, Agni, hear us; may all the mighty, immortal ones listen.
May the god Savitar, rich in gifts, come to us, traversing the midspace, drawn by horses; holding noble things in his hand, establishing and bestowing abundance upon us.
His arms, strong and broad, golden at their ends, stretch from heaven; now may his greatness be manifest, and may even the sun follow his guidance for us.
May the god Savitar, powerful and generous, grant us wealth; distributing wide-reaching strength, may he give us the food of mortals.
These hymns praise Savitar, with beautiful tongue, full-handed, radiant; may he grant us splendid vigor and greatness; may you always protect us with blessings.
These hymns are for Rudra, of firm bow, swift arrow, divine, self-sustaining; for the mighty, enduring, creative, sharp-armed—may he hear us.
He rules over the dwelling and birth of earth, and reigns in the heavenly realm; let him approach us, protecting from harm—O Rudra, be gracious among us.
May your lightning, released from heaven, move over the earth and shield us; may your thousand healing remedies soothe us—do not harm our offspring or descendants.
Do not strike us, Rudra, do not drive us away; let us not fall in the path of your wrath; grant us your favor in the sacrifice for the wish of life; may you always protect us with blessings.
Waters, you who first serve the gods, create the stream for Indra's drink; we seek you, pure, delightful, sprinkled with ghee, sweet with honey.
That stream of yours, waters, most sweet, swift-flowing, let us attain; in which Indra delights with the Vasus—may we, worshipping, reach it today.
The divine waters, purified a hundred times, rejoice in their own nature, and go on their path; they do not violate Indra's laws—offer the oblation, rich in ghee, to the rivers.
Those which Sūrya has spread with his rays, by which Indra opened the stream's path; those rivers, grant us passage—may you always protect us with blessings.
Rejoice, O Ribhus, O givers of wealth, for us, O men, O generous ones, in the Soma; may your noble intentions come to us, may the skillful turn your splendid chariot.
May we be with you, O Rbhu, together with the Rbhus; O Mighty One, with the mighty, with strength upon strength. May Vaja, the bestower of strength, protect us in the gaining of strength; with Indra as our ally, may we overcome the foe.
For even those ancient commands are still effective; all the Arya’s decrees remain firm. Indra, the mighty, the Rbhukṣa, Vaja, the noble, has shattered the enemy’s pride and established manly power.
Now, O gods, make a broad path for us; may all of you, united, be our helpers. Grant us wealth, O Vasus, and ever protect us with well-being, always guard us with blessings.
Born of the ocean, from the midst of the waters, the purifying ones come, never settling. Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt, the bull, has sent them forth—may these divine waters here protect me.
Whether they are heavenly waters or those that flow, those that are dug or those that arise of themselves, those that seek the ocean, pure and radiant—may these divine waters here protect me.
Among whom Varuṇa is king, moving in their midst, discerning truth and falsehood among men; those pure, radiant ones that flow with sweetness—may these divine waters here protect me.
