दण्डा इवेद्गोअजनास आसन्परिच्छिन्ना भरता अर्भकासः । अभवच्च पुरएता वसिष्ठ आदित्तृत्सूनां विशो अप्रथन्त
The people were like rods, the Bharatas were young and confined; Vasishtha became their leader, and the tribes of the Tritsus spread forth.
त्रयः कृण्वन्ति भुवनेषु रेतस्तिस्रः प्रजा आर्या ज्योतिरग्राः । त्रयो घर्मास उषसं सचन्ते सर्वाँ इत्ताँ अनु विदुर्वसिष्ठाः
Three create seed in the worlds, three noble lineages, leaders of light; three libations join the dawn, and all the Vasishthas know these completely.
सूर्यस्येव वक्षथो ज्योतिरेषां समुद्रस्येव महिमा गभीरः । वातस्येव प्रजवो नान्येन स्तोमो वसिष्ठा अन्वेतवे वः
Their radiance is like the sun's brilliance, their greatness deep as the ocean; their force is like the wind's offspring—no other praise is to be followed but that of the Vasishthas.
त इन्निण्यं हृदयस्य प्रकेतैः सहस्रवल्शमभि सं चरन्ति । यमेन ततं परिधिं वयन्तोऽप्सरस उप सेदुर्वसिष्ठाः
With the insights of the heart, they move together, a thousand-streamed; weaving the boundary stretched by Yama, the Vasishthas approached the Apsarases.
विद्युतो ज्योतिः परि संजिहानं मित्रावरुणा यदपश्यतां त्वा । तत्ते जन्मोतैकं वसिष्ठागस्त्यो यत्त्वा विश आजभार
When Mitra and Varuna saw you as a flashing light, enveloped like lightning, that was your birth; and Vasishtha, the sage, was brought forth by the people.
उतासि मैत्रावरुणो वसिष्ठोर्वश्या ब्रह्मन्मनसोऽधि जातः । द्रप्सं स्कन्नं ब्रह्मणा दैव्येन विश्वे देवाः पुष्करे त्वाददन्त
You are indeed Vasishtha, son of Mitra and Varuna, born from Urvashi by the power of the mind; all the gods took you, a divine drop fallen in a lotus, by their divine power.
स प्रकेत उभयस्य प्रविद्वान्सहस्रदान उत वा सदानः । यमेन ततं परिधिं वयिष्यन्नप्सरसः परि जज्ञे वसिष्ठः
He, wise in both, knowing all, giver of a thousand gifts and always generous, Vasishtha was born among the Apsarases, crossing the boundary stretched by Yama.
सत्रे ह जाताविषिता नमोभिः कुम्भे रेतः सिषिचतुः समानम् । ततो ह मान उदियाय मध्यात्ततो जातमृषिमाहुर्वसिष्ठम्
Truly, in the assembly, the two powerful ones poured the same seed with reverence into a vessel; from the midst of it I arose, and from that birth they called Vasishtha the seer.
उक्थभृतं सामभृतं बिभर्ति ग्रावाणं बिभ्रत्प्र वदात्यग्रे । उपैनमाध्वं सुमनस्यमाना आ वो गच्छाति प्रतृदो वसिष्ठः
He bears the Uktha and the Sama, carrying the stone, he speaks first; approach him with good will, for Vasishtha, the generous, comes to you.
प्र शुक्रैतु देवी मनीषा अस्मत्सुतष्टो रथो न वाजी
Let the bright, divine thought go forth, well-pleased with us, like a swift chariot.
विदुः पृथिव्या दिवो जनित्रं शृण्वन्त्यापो अध क्षरन्तीः
They know the origin of earth and heaven; the waters listen as they flow below.
आपश्चिदस्मै पिन्वन्त पृथ्वीर्वृत्रेषु शूरा मंसन्त उग्राः
Even the waters swell for him; the strong ones, fierce in battles, desire the earths.
आ धूर्ष्वस्मै दधाताश्वानिन्द्रो न वज्री हिरण्यबाहुः
Yoke the horses for him to the yoke, like Indra the wielder of the bolt, golden-armed.
अभि प्र स्थाताहेव यज्ञं यातेव पत्मन्त्मना हिनोत
Let him advance, as one setting out, to the sacrifice, as a wife to her husband; strengthen him with your own power.
त्मना समत्सु हिनोत यज्ञं दधात केतुं जनाय वीरम्
With your own power, strengthen the sacrifice in the battles; set a sign, a hero, for the people.
उदस्य शुष्माद्भानुर्नार्त बिभर्ति भारं पृथिवी न भूम
From his energies, his brilliance rises; he bears the burden like the earth bears the world.
ह्वयामि देवाँ अयातुरग्ने साधन्नृतेन धियं दधामि
I call upon the gods—may they come, O Agni; having accomplished righteousness, I set my thought.
अभि वो देवीं धियं दधिध्वं प्र वो देवत्रा वाचं कृणुध्वम्
Direct your inspired thought to the goddess; raise your voice here to the gods.
आ चष्ट आसां पाथो नदीनां वरुण उग्रः सहस्रचक्षाः
The mighty Varuṇa, thousand-eyed, has beheld the courses of these rivers.
राजा राष्ट्रानां पेशो नदीनामनुत्तमस्मै क्षत्रं विश्वायु
The king of peoples, the adornment of rivers, to him belongs the supreme dominion, all-pervading.
अविष्टो अस्मान्विश्वासु विक्ष्वद्युं कृणोत शंसं निनित्सोः
May he protect us in all the tribes; may he make our praise renowned, O you who are to be praised.
व्येतु दिद्युद्द्विषामशेवा युयोत विष्वग्रपस्तनूनाम्
Let the hostile lightning depart far away; ward off all harm from our bodies.
अवीन्नो अग्निर्हव्यान्नमोभिः प्रेष्ठो अस्मा अधायि स्तोमः
Agni has accepted our offerings with reverence; our hymn has been placed before him as most dear.
सजूर्देवेभिरपां नपातं सखायं कृध्वं शिवो नो अस्तु
Together with the gods, make the Offspring of the Waters our friend; may he be gracious to us.
अब्जामुक्थैरहिं गृणीषे बुध्ने नदीनां रजस्सु षीदन्
With lotus-mouths I praise the serpent in the depths of the rivers, who sits in the realms.
मा नोऽहिर्बुध्न्यो रिषे धान्मा यज्ञो अस्य स्रिधदृतायोः
May the Serpent of the Deep not harm us; may his sacrifice not fail through the faults of the two upholders of order.
उत न एषु नृषु श्रवो धुः प्र राये यन्तु शर्धन्तो अर्यः
And may fame come to us among these men; may the noble ones, striving, go forth for wealth.
तपन्ति शत्रुं स्वर्ण भूमा महासेनासो अमेभिरेषाम्
They scorch the enemy, shining, vast, mighty hosts, with their weapons.
आ यन्नः पत्नीर्गमन्त्यच्छा त्वष्टा सुपाणिर्दधातु वीरान्
When our wives come to us, may Tvaṣṭṛ, with fair hands, grant us sons.
प्रति न स्तोमं त्वष्टा जुषेत स्यादस्मे अरमतिर्वसूयुः
May Tvaṣṭṛ accept our hymn; may the favor of the loving one, the seeker of wealth, be with us.
