No other, neither celestial nor earthly, neither born nor to be born, is like you; O generous Indra, we call upon you, seeking horses and strength, seeking cows.
Bring here, O Indra, the might of the greater over the lesser; for you, O generous one, are the ancient benefactor of many, ever worthy of invocation in every contest.
Drive away, O generous Indra, our foes; grant us true wealth; be our protector in great riches, and be the strength of our companions.
O Indra, bring us resolve, as a father does for his sons. Much-invoked one, instruct us in this path, so that we may attain living light.
Let not unknown or hostile men overpower us, nor let evil dwell among us. With you, O hero, we shall always cross over deep waters.
With white-tipped, right-braided hair, inspiring thought, they have come forth to gladden; rising, I proclaim from the sacred grass to the men: O Vasishthas, be my protectors from afar.
From afar they brought Indra with the pressed Soma, past the hostile, the fierce guardian; from the Soma of Pashadyumna's descendant, Indra chose the Vasishthas.
Thus with these he crossed the river, thus with these he struck down the barrier; thus with these, for Sudas son of Divodasa, Indra advanced by your prayer, O Vasishthas.
Favored men, you possess the imperishable, unfailing power of your fathers through sacred utterance; surely you do not err, for in the great chants, Indra placed strength in the Vasishthas with a mighty roar.
Like thirsty men seeking water, they, the chosen ones, shone forth for the king of the Dasharajna; Indra listened to the praise of Vasishtha and made wide space for the Tritsus.
The people were like rods, the Bharatas were young and confined; Vasishtha became their leader, and the tribes of the Tritsus spread forth.
Three create seed in the worlds, three noble lineages, leaders of light; three libations join the dawn, and all the Vasishthas know these completely.
Their radiance is like the sun's brilliance, their greatness deep as the ocean; their force is like the wind's offspring—no other praise is to be followed but that of the Vasishthas.
With the insights of the heart, they move together, a thousand-streamed; weaving the boundary stretched by Yama, the Vasishthas approached the Apsarases.
When Mitra and Varuna saw you as a flashing light, enveloped like lightning, that was your birth; and Vasishtha, the sage, was brought forth by the people.
You are indeed Vasishtha, son of Mitra and Varuna, born from Urvashi by the power of the mind; all the gods took you, a divine drop fallen in a lotus, by their divine power.
He, wise in both, knowing all, giver of a thousand gifts and always generous, Vasishtha was born among the Apsarases, crossing the boundary stretched by Yama.
Truly, in the assembly, the two powerful ones poured the same seed with reverence into a vessel; from the midst of it I arose, and from that birth they called Vasishtha the seer.
He bears the Uktha and the Sama, carrying the stone, he speaks first; approach him with good will, for Vasishtha, the generous, comes to you.
Let the bright, divine thought go forth, well-pleased with us, like a swift chariot.
They know the origin of earth and heaven; the waters listen as they flow below.
Even the waters swell for him; the strong ones, fierce in battles, desire the earths.
Yoke the horses for him to the yoke, like Indra the wielder of the bolt, golden-armed.
Let him advance, as one setting out, to the sacrifice, as a wife to her husband; strengthen him with your own power.
With your own power, strengthen the sacrifice in the battles; set a sign, a hero, for the people.
From his energies, his brilliance rises; he bears the burden like the earth bears the world.
I call upon the gods—may they come, O Agni; having accomplished righteousness, I set my thought.
Direct your inspired thought to the goddess; raise your voice here to the gods.
The mighty Varuṇa, thousand-eyed, has beheld the courses of these rivers.
The king of peoples, the adornment of rivers, to him belongs the supreme dominion, all-pervading.
