तं होतारमध्वरस्य प्रचेतसं वह्निं देवा अकृण्वत । दधाति रत्नं विधते सुवीर्यमग्निर्जनाय दाशुषे
As Hotar of the sacrifice, the wise, the radiant one, the gods have made Agni. He bestows treasure and heroic strength on the worshipper who serves the people.
अग्ने भव सुषमिधा समिद्ध उत बर्हिरुर्विया वि स्तृणीताम्
Agni, be well-kindled with perfect fuel; let the broad altar be spread wide.
उत द्वार उशतीर्वि श्रयन्तामुत देवाँ उशत आ वहेह
Let the shining doors be opened wide; let the gods, shining ones, come here together.
अग्ने वीहि हविषा यक्षि देवान्स्वध्वरा कृणुहि जातवेदः
Agni, come with the offering, worship the gods; O knower of all births, perform the flawless rite.
स्वध्वरा करति जातवेदा यक्षद्देवाँ अमृतान्पिप्रयच्च
The knower of all births performs the flawless rite; let him worship the immortal gods and gladden them.
वंस्व विश्वा वार्याणि प्रचेतः सत्या भवन्त्वाशिषो नो अद्य
Grant all desirable things, O wise one; may our wishes today be fulfilled in truth.
त्वामु ते दधिरे हव्यवाहं देवासो अग्न ऊर्ज आ नपातम्
You, Agni, the gods have established as the bearer of offerings, the child of strength, the lord of nourishment.
ते ते देवाय दाशतः स्याम महो नो रत्ना वि दध इयानः
May we, devoted to you, O god, be those who serve you; may you bestow upon us great treasures as you advance.
त्वे ह यत्पितरश्चिन्न इन्द्र विश्वा वामा जरितारो असन्वन् । त्वे गावः सुदुघास्त्वे ह्यश्वास्त्वं वसु देवयते वनिष्ठः
Indeed, O Indra, even the fathers, O singer, obtained all desirable things through you; through you, cows yield abundant milk, through you, horses, and you are the bestower of wealth to the worshipper.
राजेव हि जनिभिः क्षेष्येवाव द्युभिरभि विदुष्कविः सन् । पिशा गिरो मघवन्गोभिरश्वैस्त्वायतः शिशीहि राये अस्मान्
Like a king with his people, like a herdsman with his cattle, you, Maghavan, are renowned among the wise; delight in our songs, O Indra, grant us wealth with cows and horses.
इमा उ त्वा पस्पृधानासो अत्र मन्द्रा गिरो देवयन्तीरुप स्थुः । अर्वाची ते पथ्या राय एतु स्याम ते सुमताविन्द्र शर्मन्
Here, these sweet songs, offered to you, have come forth, O godly one; let your favorable path of wealth approach, may we be in your good favor, Indra, under your protection.
धेनुं न त्वा सूयवसे दुदुक्षन्नुप ब्रह्माणि ससृजे वसिष्ठः । त्वामिन्मे गोपतिं विश्व आहा न इन्द्रः सुमतिं गन्त्वच्छ
Desiring the milking of the cow for sustenance, Vasiṣṭha has sent forth praises to you; all people call you their lord of cattle, O Indra, may your favor come to us.
अर्णांसि चित्पप्रथाना सुदास इन्द्रो गाधान्यकृणोत्सुपारा । शर्धन्तं शिम्युमुचथस्य नव्यः शापं सिन्धूनामकृणोदशस्तीः
Indra made the broad, deep waters fordable for Sudās; he destroyed the advancing host of the Śimyu, and broke the curse of the Sindhu rivers.
पुरोळा इत्तुर्वशो यक्षुरासीद्राये मत्स्यासो निशिता अपीव । श्रुष्टिं चक्रुर्भृगवो द्रुह्यवश्च सखा सखायमतरद्विषूचोः
The Turvaśa and Yadu were the sacrificial priests, the Matsya were eager for wealth, sharp in their intent; the Bhṛgus and Druhyus made an alliance, friend passed beyond friend in enmity.
आ पक्थासो भलानसो भनन्तालिनासो विषाणिनः शिवासः । आ योऽनयत्सधमा आर्यस्य गव्या तृत्सुभ्यो अजगन्युधा नॄन्
The Pakthas, Bhalānas, Alinas, Viṣāṇins, and Śivās gathered; he who led forth the Arya’s assembly for cattle, Indra, drove the Tṛtsus’ enemies to defeat.
दुराध्यो अदितिं स्रेवयन्तोऽचेतसो वि जगृभ्रे परुष्णीम् । मह्नाविव्यक्पृथिवीं पत्यमानः पशुष्कविरशयच्चायमानः
Those lacking wisdom, seeking to win Aditi’s favor, seized the Paruṣṇī; but Indra, in his greatness, spread the earth for the ruling one, and scattered the cattle, letting them wander.
ईयुरर्थं न न्यर्थं परुष्णीमाशुश्चनेदभिपित्वं जगाम । सुदास इन्द्रः सुतुकाँ अमित्रानरन्धयन्मानुषे वध्रिवाचः
They came for gain, not for loss, to the Paruṣṇī; they rushed swiftly, seeking to conquer, but Indra, eager for Soma, checked the hostile, speechless men for Sudās.
ईयुर्गावो न यवसादगोपा यथाकृतमभि मित्रं चितासः । पृश्निगावः पृश्निनिप्रेषितासः श्रुष्टिं चक्रुर्नियुतो रन्तयश्च
The cows, like guardians, went to the pasture as was their custom, even among the enemies; the speckled cows, sent by the speckled one, made a path, and the troops rejoiced.
एकं च यो विंशतिं च श्रवस्या वैकर्णयोर्जनान्राजा न्यस्तः । दस्मो न सद्मन्नि शिशाति बर्हिः शूरः सर्गमकृणोदिन्द्र एषाम्
He, the king, cast down one and twenty renowned tribes of the Vaikarṇa; like a mighty one, he sits in his dwelling, Indra, the hero, made a stream for them.
अध श्रुतं कवषं वृद्धमप्स्वनु द्रुह्युं नि वृणग्वज्रबाहुः । वृणाना अत्र सख्याय सख्यं त्वायन्तो ये अमदन्ननु त्वा
Then, Indra, strong-armed, subdued Kavaṣa, the aged, in the waters, and the Druhyu; here, those seeking friendship found friendship, those who delighted in you, followed you.
वि सद्यो विश्वा दृंहितान्येषामिन्द्रः पुरः सहसा सप्त दर्दः । व्यानवस्य तृत्सवे गयं भाग्जेष्म पूरुं विदथे मृध्रवाचम्
Indra at once shattered all their strongholds, seven fortresses, with force; he drove away Gaya for Tṛtsu, and in the contest, subdued Pūru, the speaker of harsh words.
नि गव्यवोऽनवो द्रुह्यवश्च षष्टिः शता सुषुपुः षट् सहस्रा । षष्टिर्वीरासो अधि षड्दुवोयु विश्वेदिन्द्रस्य वीर्या कृतानि
Sixty, a hundred, and six thousand of the Anu and Druhyu hosts slept, the sixty heroes and six leaders; all these deeds were accomplished by Indra’s might.
इन्द्रेणैते तृत्सवो वेविषाणा आपो न सृष्टा अधवन्त नीचीः । दुर्मित्रासः प्रकलविन्मिमाना जहुर्विश्वानि भोजना सुदासे
With Indra, the Tṛtsus, exulting, crossed over like waters released, flowing downward; the ill-minded, measuring out their plots, abandoned all possessions to Sudās.
अर्धं वीरस्य शृतपामनिन्द्रं परा शर्धन्तं नुनुदे अभि क्षाम् । इन्द्रो मन्युं मन्युम्यो मिमाय भेजे पथो वर्तनिं पत्यमानः
Indra, the drinker of Soma, drove away half the advancing host, opposing the arrogant; Indra measured out wrath against wrath, choosing the path, ruling the course.
आध्रेण चित्तद्वेकं चकार सिंह्यं चित्पेत्वेना जघान । अव स्रक्तीर्वेश्यावृश्चदिन्द्रः प्रायच्छद्विश्वा भोजना सुदासे
With a single blow, he made the fierce one tremble, even the lion he struck down with his might; Indra cut down the leaders of the enemy, and gave all the possessions to Sudās.
शश्वन्तो हि शत्रवो रारधुष्टे भेदस्य चिच्छर्धतो विन्द रन्धिम् । मर्ताँ एन स्तुवतो यः कृणोति तिग्मं तस्मिन्नि जहि वज्रमिन्द्र
The enemies, though ever hostile, have been shattered, even those who sought to break through; for the mortal who praises you, Indra, strike with your sharp thunderbolt.
आवदिन्द्रं यमुना तृत्सवश्च प्रात्र भेदं सर्वताता मुषायत् । अजासश्च शिग्रवो यक्षवश्च बलिं शीर्षाणि जभ्रुरश्व्यानि
The Tṛtsus, along with Yamunā, drove Indra forward at dawn, breaking through all barriers; the Ajās, the Śigrus, and the Yakṣus, bearing tribute, carried off the horses' heads.
न त इन्द्र सुमतयो न रायः संचक्षे पूर्वा उषसो न नूत्नाः । देवकं चिन्मान्यमानं जघन्थाव त्मना बृहतः शम्बरं भेत्
Neither former nor new dawns, nor Indra's favor or riches, could protect them; you, Indra, even struck down Devaka, who thought himself mighty, and shattered the great Śambara.
प्र ये गृहादममदुस्त्वाया पराशरः शतयातुर्वसिष्ठः । न ते भोजस्य सख्यं मृषन्ताधा सूरिभ्यः सुदिना व्युच्छान्
Those who rejoiced in the house of the enemy—Parāśara, Śatayātu, and Vasiṣṭha—did not abandon the friendship of Bhoja; thus, for the wise, the days of good fortune have dawned.
द्वे नप्तुर्देववतः शते गोर्द्वा रथा वधूमन्ता सुदासः । अर्हन्नग्ने पैजवनस्य दानं होतेव सद्म पर्येमि रेभन्
Sudās, the grandson of Devavata, has won two hundred cows and two chariots with brides; O Agni, I honor the gift of Paijavana, circling the house like a priest, resounding in praise.
