We worship you, O lord, skilled and wise, the messenger between earth and heaven, truthful in speech. Like Manu, we kindle Agni for the sacrifice, always striving for the sacred rite.
The worshippers, bearing offerings, arrange the sacred grass for Agni with reverence. Calling for the clarified butter, O priests, purify the oblation with your hands.
Those devoted to the gods, skilled in rites, have settled in the sacred enclosure, longing for divinity. Like a child embraced by its mothers, they unite together in the assembly.
And the divine maidens, great like heaven, Ushas and Night, are like a cow rich in milk. The generous ones, seated on the sacred grass, should come to the sacrifice for prosperity.
I consider you, O inspired ones, as priests among human sacrifices, worthy of worship through offerings. Raise our sacrifice upward in the oblations; then, among the gods, grant us the desired rewards.
May Bhāratī come with the Bhāratīs, united; may Iḻā with the gods and men, and Agni. May Sarasvatī with the Sarasvats approach; may these three goddesses sit upon this sacred grass.
May Tvaṣṭar, the nourishing god, be favorable to us, granting increase and abundance. From him is born the heroic, skillful, and eager one, who desires the gods and is yoked for action.
O Lord of the Forest, send forth the offering to the gods; Agni, the purifier, distributes the oblation. Let the true priest perform the sacrifice, as he knows the origins of the gods.
Come near, O Agni, kindled, together with Indra and the gods, with the swift ones. Let Aditi, with her good sons, sit upon the sacred grass; may the immortal gods rejoice with the offering.
With the fires, united, make Agni, the god, the most worthy priest and messenger at the sacrifice. He is steadfast among mortals, a protector, radiant, and pure, nourished with clarified butter.
Like a horse let loose to graze on young grass, when, mighty, it has broken free from restraint—so your flame, O Agni, follows the wind; then your black path becomes visible.
When you, newly born and powerful, O Agni, are kindled, the undying flames move about; your red smoke rises to the sky, and as a messenger, Agni, you go to the gods.
Your force spreads across the earth, when, with devouring jaws, you consume the offerings; like an army set in motion, you advance, and, O wondrous one, you select the barley with your tongue.
At evening and at dawn, men cleanse the youngest, most energetic Agni, as one would groom a horse; ever shining, as a guest in his dwelling, the flame of the strong one blazes when offered.
With well-anointed face and shining aspect, when you, like gold, glow at the altar; your power, like the thunder of the sky, resounds, and, like the sun, you reveal your brilliant light.
As we would serve you, Agni, with offerings and praises, with oblations rich in ghee, so with your boundless greatness, protect us, Agni, with a hundred iron forts.
Whatever invincible songs you have for the worshipper, or with which you, rich in men, are pleased—by those, O son of strength, protect us, Agni Jātavedas, our lords and singers.
As a sharp axe shines forth from the wood, so you, self-luminous, appear in your own form; he who was born from the wide womb of the mother, pure, wise, fit for divine worship.
O Agni, grant us these blessings; may we possess wise and discerning power; let all good things come to the praiser and the singer. You all, always protect us with well-being.
Offer up for you the bright, shining oblation and pure thought to Agni, who knows well, who conquers all divine and human races with his wisdom.
Let that clever Agni, even when young, be here, from wherever he, the youngest, was born of his mother; who, pure, quickly kindles many offerings, and at once consumes abundant food.
In the assembly of this god, whose seat mortals have taken, Agni has declared the human seed, and for the distant one, he has blazed forth for the seeker.
This wise one, among the wise, is established as immortal Agni among mortals; may we here always be of good mind to you, O mighty one, and not be harmed.
He has sat down in the womb made by the gods; by his power Agni has crossed over the immortals; the darkness, the plants, and the forest's offspring, and the earth, bearer of all, upholds him.
For Agni is lord of the immortal abundance, lord of wealth, of the giver of heroic strength; may we, O mighty one, not, lacking sons or vigor, ever turn away from you or your favor.
May we be lords of the ever-renewed, inexhaustible wealth of the forest, O Agni; there is no other birth for the unmindful—do not let us stray from your path.
For the fire of the forest is not easy to seize, nor is the kindly one to be grasped by another's belly or mind; yet, even so, he returns home again—may the new one, strong, come to us without harm.
You, Agni, protect us from the hostile; you, O mighty one, from reproach; let the path come together for you as for the smoke, let wealth, desirable and abundant, come together for you.
O Agni, shine forth these blessings for us; may we attain wise and mindful resolve. Let all gifts be for those who praise and sing; may you always protect us with well-being.
Offer your voice to Agni, the powerful, for the help of heaven and earth. Vaiśvānara, who has grown strong among the immortals, is awake with the vigilant.
