उप च्छायामिव घृणेरगन्म शर्म ते वयम् । अग्ने हिरण्यसंदृशः
We have come to your shelter, O Agni, as to the shade of the sun, O you of golden appearance.
य उग्र इव शर्यहा तिग्मशृङ्गो न वंसगः । अग्ने पुरो रुरोजिथ
You, Agni, like a fierce warrior, sharp-horned as a bull, have shattered the strongholds.
आ यं हस्ते न खादिनं शिशुं जातं न बिभ्रति । विशामग्निं स्वध्वरम्
Whom, though born, they do not carry in their hands, like a child, Agni, the righteous among the clans.
प्र देवं देववीतये भरता वसुवित्तमम् । आ स्वे योनौ नि षीदतु
Bring forth the god for the favor of the gods, the bestower of wealth; let him sit in his own seat.
आ जातं जातवेदसि प्रियं शिशीतातिथिम् । स्योन आ गृहपतिम्
To the newborn Jātavedas, dear guest, let us offer welcome, as a gentle householder.
अग्ने युक्ष्वा हि ये तवाश्वासो देव साधवः । अरं वहन्ति मन्यवे
O Agni, yoke those horses of yours, O god, the noble ones, who swiftly carry the offering.
अच्छा नो याह्या वहाभि प्रयांसि वीतये । आ देवान्सोमपीतये
Come to us, Agni, and bring with you the offerings, to the gods for the drinking of Soma.
उदग्ने भारत द्युमदजस्रेण दविद्युतत् । शोचा वि भाह्यजर
Rise up, O Agni, shining for the Bhāratas with unfailing, flashing light; blaze forth, undecaying one.
वीती यो देवं मर्तो दुवस्येदग्निमीळीताध्वरे हविष्मान् । होतारं सत्ययजं रोदस्योरुत्तानहस्तो नमसा विवासेत्
Whoever, O god, among mortals, with offering, worships Agni at the sacrifice, invokes the true-sacrificing Hotar of earth and heaven, with upraised hands and reverence—
आ ते अग्न ऋचा हविर्हृदा तष्टं भरामसि । ते ते भवन्तूक्षण ऋषभासो वशा उत
To you, Agni, we bring with hymn and offering what is fashioned in the heart; may those strong bulls, your guardians, be favorable to you.
अग्निं देवासो अग्रियमिन्धते वृत्रहन्तमम् । येना वसून्याभृता तृळ्हा रक्षांसि वाजिना
The gods kindle Agni, the foremost, the slayer of Vritra, by whom the treasures are brought forth, who fiercely repels the demons with his strength.
पिबा सोममभि यमुग्र तर्द ऊर्वं गव्यं महि गृणान इन्द्र । वि यो धृष्णो वधिषो वज्रहस्त विश्वा वृत्रममित्रिया शवोभिः
Drink the Soma, O mighty one, for whom we sing; Indra, shatter the wide enclosure of cattle; you, bold and strong, with the thunderbolt in hand, destroy all the Vritras and foes with your power.
स ईं पाहि य ऋजीषी तरुत्रो यः शिप्रवान्वृषभो यो मतीनाम् । यो गोत्रभिद्वज्रभृद्यो हरिष्ठाः स इन्द्र चित्राँ अभि तृन्धि वाजान्
Drink for him who is swift, who is victorious, who is the bull with flowing mane, who is master of wisdom; who breaks the cattle-stalls, who bears the thunderbolt, who is swift as the horses; O Indra, conquer the prizes with your brilliance.
एवा पाहि प्रत्नथा मन्दतु त्वा श्रुधि ब्रह्म वावृधस्वोत गीर्भिः । आविः सूर्यं कृणुहि पीपिहीषो जहि शत्रूँरभि गा इन्द्र तृन्धि
Thus drink, as in ancient times; let your delight grow; hear the hymn, increase with our songs; make the sun visible for those who thirst; strike down the enemies, and win the cattle, O Indra.
ते त्वा मदा बृहदिन्द्र स्वधाव इमे पीता उक्षयन्त द्युमन्तम् । महामनूनं तवसं विभूतिं मत्सरासो जर्हृषन्त प्रसाहम्
These exhilarating draughts, O Indra, mighty and self-sustaining, when drunk, make you radiant; the eager ones rejoice in your great strength and your splendid power.
येभिः सूर्यमुषसं मन्दसानोऽवासयोऽप दृळ्हानि दर्द्रत् । महामद्रिं परि गा इन्द्र सन्तं नुत्था अच्युतं सदसस्परि स्वात्
With these draughts you delight in the sun and the dawn, you shatter the firm enclosures; O Indra, circle the great mountain, rise up, and move around the unshaken seat.
तव क्रत्वा तव तद्दंसनाभिरामासु पक्वं शच्या नि दीधः । और्णोर्दुर उस्रियाभ्यो वि दृळ्होदूर्वाद्गा असृजो अङ्गिरस्वान्
By your resolve, by your actions, by your skill, you have cooked the ripe offering; you released the cows from the enclosure, O Angiras, you broke the stronghold and let the cattle flow forth.
पप्राथ क्षां महि दंसो व्युर्वीमुप द्यामृष्वो बृहदिन्द्र स्तभायः । अधारयो रोदसी देवपुत्रे प्रत्ने मातरा यह्वी ऋतस्य
You expanded the earth, your great power spread wide; you raised the heavens, O Indra, mighty and lofty; you supported the two divine daughters, the ancient mothers, young and true to order.
अध त्वा विश्वे पुर इन्द्र देवा एकं तवसं दधिरे भराय । अदेवो यदभ्यौहिष्ट देवान्स्वर्षाता वृणत इन्द्रमत्र
Then all the gods in the ancient cities placed you alone, O Indra, as the mighty one for the task; when the ungodly challenged the gods, they chose Indra here as the bringer of light.
अध द्यौश्चित्ते अप सा नु वज्राद्द्वितानमद्भियसा स्वस्य मन्योः । अहिं यदिन्द्रो अभ्योहसानं नि चिद्विश्वायुः शयथे जघान
Then the sky, with its mind, was split by the thunderbolt; the waters rushed forth from the blow; when Indra, with his might, struck the serpent, he laid low the universal foe.
अध त्वष्टा ते मह उग्र वज्रं सहस्रभृष्टिं ववृतच्छताश्रिम् । निकाममरमणसं येन नवन्तमहिं सं पिणगृजीषिन्
Then Tvashtar fashioned for you, O mighty one, the great thunderbolt with a thousand spikes, adorned with a hundred edges; with it, you crushed the serpent, relentless and fierce.
वर्धान्यं विश्वे मरुतः सजोषाः पचच्छतं महिषाँ इन्द्र तुभ्यम् । पूषा विष्णुस्त्रीणि सरांसि धावन्वृत्रहणं मदिरमंशुमस्मै
All the Maruts, united, increased your strength, O Indra, and cooked the offering for you; Pūshan and Vishnu ran through the three realms, bringing the exhilarating drink for the slayer of Vritra.
आ क्षोदो महि वृतं नदीनां परिष्ठितमसृज ऊर्मिमपाम् । तासामनु प्रवत इन्द्र पन्थां प्रार्दयो नीचीरपसः समुद्रम्
You released the mighty flood of rivers, the gathered waters, and sent forth the wave of the streams; following their course, O Indra, you opened the path and led the waters to the ocean.
एवा ता विश्वा चकृवांसमिन्द्रं महामुग्रमजुर्यं सहोदाम् । सुवीरं त्वा स्वायुधं सुवज्रमा ब्रह्म नव्यमवसे ववृत्यात्
Thus, having accomplished all these deeds, Indra, the great, the mighty, the unconquered, the companion of strength; we praise you, O hero, with your own weapons and thunderbolt, with new hymns for help.
स नो वाजाय श्रवस इषे च राये धेहि द्युमत इन्द्र विप्रान् । भरद्वाजे नृवत इन्द्र सूरीन्दिवि च स्मैधि पार्ये न इन्द्र
Grant us, O Indra, glory, strength, and wealth; bestow brilliance upon the wise; to Bharadvāja, give the leaders and heroes, and in heaven, let Indra be our protector.
अया वाजं देवहितं सनेम मदेम शतहिमाः सुवीराः
With this, may we win the prize, favored by the gods; may we rejoice, victorious over a hundred enemies, with strong sons.
तमु ष्टुहि यो अभिभूत्योजा वन्वन्नवातः पुरुहूत इन्द्रः । अषाळ्हमुग्रं सहमानमाभिर्गीर्भिर्वर्ध वृषभं चर्षणीनाम्
Praise him who is supreme in strength, who conquers, who is invoked by many, Indra; the mighty, unconquered, enduring one; with songs, exalt the bull among men.
स युध्मः सत्वा खजकृत्समद्वा तुविम्रक्षो नदनुमाँ ऋजीषी । बृहद्रेणुश्च्यवनो मानुषीणामेकः कृष्टीनामभवत्सहावा
He is the warrior, powerful, who shakes all, who is fierce and swift, the leader of men; with great dust, he stirs the people, he alone became the champion of the tribes.
त्वं ह नु त्यददमायो दस्यूँरेकः कृष्टीरवनोरार्याय । अस्ति स्विन्नु वीर्यं तत्त इन्द्र न स्विदस्ति तदृतुथा वि वोचः
Indeed, you alone, O unconquered one, struck down the Dasyu, protecting the peoples for the Arya. Is that your true strength, O Indra, or is there yet more? Speak truly of this.
सदिद्धि ते तुविजातस्य मन्ये सहः सहिष्ठ तुरतस्तुरस्य । उग्रमुग्रस्य तवसस्तवीयोऽरध्रस्य रध्रतुरो बभूव
Truly, I consider your power, O mighty-born, to be steadfast, most forceful, swiftest of the swift. The fierce one’s strength has become even greater, the unyielding one’s resolve has grown more resolute.
