Offer worship, O Agni, inspired by the Hotar, most worthy of sacrifice; let not the invocation of the Maruts be hindered. May Mitra, Varuna, the Ashvins, Heaven and Earth, turn towards our offering as Hotar.
You are the Hotar, most delightful, never failing among mortals at the assembly, O god. With your shining tongue, as Fire, approach and perform the sacrifice with your own form, O Agni.
Indeed, the inspired prayer seeks you, for you are worthy; the singer, desiring to praise the gods, calls you to the sacrifice. Most stirring among the Angirases, when the sage, sweet-voiced, proclaims aloud at the offering.
He has flashed forth, the all-wise, the radiant one. O Agni, perform the sacrifice in the wide expanse of heaven and earth. As men offer the chosen oblation with reverence for long life, so five peoples approach the well-guided one.
When I, with reverence, arrange the sacred grass for Agni, the ladle filled with ghee, the well-praised hymn—then the dwelling is established on earth, the sacrifice rests, as the eye upon the sun.
Be gracious to us, O Hotar of ancient order, O Agni, kindled with the gods and with the fires. O son of strength, bestow wealth upon us; may we cross over the multitude of evil.
In the midst, as Hotar, in the house, on the sacred grass, Agni, you urge on heaven and earth for the sacrifice. This son of strength, true to law, has spread forth from afar, like the sun with his flame.
In whom, O all-wise, O worshipful one, the gods dwell—O king, as if heaven itself is present. He, three-seated, stretches forth like the sun’s light, to offer the oblations and gifts of men.
Most powerful is he, whose energy conquers the forest; the goad, unwearied, shines on the path. Like one without deceit, the swift one perceives; the immortal, unoppressed, is in the plants.
So, O Agni, for our people, not with others, be praised in the house, O knower of all births. Subduing the foe, conquering by your will, you, like a father, bring forth the sacrifice with your flames.
Then, indeed, his rays wander, when he follows the earth, whatever the craftsman fashions in vain. Suddenly, his stream, sharpened, rushes swifter; like a debtor’s pursuer, he crosses the desert.
So you, O Agni, ever-present, with all the fires, be kindled for us. You bestow wealth, you drive away misfortune; may we, with a hundred aids, rejoice in heroic sons.
From you, O fortunate Agni, all blessings proceed, as birds fly from the tree. Readily, wealth and strength come in the contest with the foe, like rain from heaven, like the flow of waters.
You are like Bhaga, bringing treasures for us; you, with wondrous radiance, distribute riches as a guardian. O Agni, you are like Mitra, upholder of great order, dispenser of abundant good, O god.
He, the true lord, with might, strikes down the foe; O Agni, the sage brings forth strength from the niggard. Whom you, O wise one, born of truth, support with wealth, together with the offspring of waters.
He, O son of strength, whom with words, with hymns, with sacrifices, the mortal approaches for protection—he, O god Agni, attains all prosperity, is lord of wealth, and rules over riches.
These blessings, O Agni, son of strength, you bestow upon men for glory and heroism. By your might, you make abundant cattle, offspring for the wolf, and riches for the eager one.
We pray, O son of strength, do not abandon us, O Agni; grant us offspring, children, and wealth. With all our hymns, may we attain fulfillment; may we, with a hundred aids, rejoice in heroic sons.
O Agni, the mortal who, with prayers, seeks your favor with devotion—may he, shining brightly, obtain ancient wealth for his aid.
Agni is indeed wise, Agni is the most skillful, a seer; men praise Agni as the Hotar in sacrifices.
For your help, O Agni, noble riches contend with one another; those who strive, by their vows, overcome the lawless foe.
Agni, conqueror of waters and death, grants a heroic, true lord; his enemies tremble in fear at his might.
For Agni, by his knowledge, repels the hostile god from the mortal; his wealth, well-defended, is victorious in contests.
O god Agni, friend of Mitra, speak to the gods for us, winning their good will from heaven and earth; bring us safety, prosperous dwelling, and let us cross hatred, distress, and misfortune—may we cross them by your help.
Now I praise this guest of yours, ever-awake, lord of all peoples, with my song; he knows the birth of heaven, he is indeed pure, he receives the offering when the support is firm.
The Bhṛgus established him, well-kindled like a friend, to be praised among forest trees, with upright flame; so you, well-pleased, O wondrous one, who brings the offering, are magnified with praises day by day.
So you, unopposed, strong, and noble, surpass the strength of others; O son of strength, grant protection and wide renown to the offering-bringer, to Bharadvāja, among mortals.
I praise Agni, the shining guest, the lord of light, the Hotar of men, skilled in sacrifice; like a wise priest, eloquent, with beautiful hymns, the god who brings offerings, the generous one.
With shining radiance, he spreads over the earth, like the dawn with her light; advancing, he never wearies, like the sun, ever youthful, never failing in his glow.
With kindling, worship Agni for you, Agni, beloved guest, I praise with song; with your hymns, summon the immortal, for among the gods the god wins the prize, among the gods the god wins our favor.
